Yes, potentially—but only if you are GST-registered and meet the normal input tax credit (ITC) conditions. A sole proprietorship is not disqualified by its business structure. What matters is your registration, the supplier and invoice, business use, and compliance with current GST rules. An unregistered proprietor cannot claim ordinary GST ITC just because the subscription supports business work.

When a sole proprietor may claim ITC

Section 16 of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act makes ITC available to a registered person for input tax on supplies used or intended to be used in the course or furtherance of business, subject to statutory conditions. The rule turns on registration and use—not whether the business is a company, partnership, or sole proprietorship. See the CGST Act, section 16.

In practical terms, a screenshot API subscription may qualify when you hold the relevant GST registration, the service is genuinely used for your registered business, and you have the required evidence and meet the applicable invoice, tax-payment, return-filing, and time-limit requirements. A subscription confirmation or credit-card receipt alone does not establish ITC eligibility.

Check the supplier and tax treatment first

Indian supplier charging GST

Check the supplier’s legal name and GST details on the tax invoice, and ensure the recipient information, including your GSTIN where applicable, is correct. Keep the invoice and verify that the inward-supply details appear in the GST records used for your return process. Rule 36 of the CGST Rules describes eligible documents and required particulars; having a document is necessary but does not by itself prove every ITC condition has been met. See CGST Rules, Rule 36.

Foreign supplier

For an overseas API subscription, identify the legal entity that supplies the service and assess the place-of-supply and import-of-service rules. Depending on the facts and classification, a registered recipient may have to pay IGST under reverse charge. CBIC guidance discusses reverse charge for services such as online database access supplied from abroad; its application to a particular screenshot API depends on the service and contracting facts. Some foreign digital services can instead involve supplier-side collection under the OIDAR rules, including in circumstances involving unregistered recipients.

Do not assume that the vendor’s location alone settles the result. Check the invoice, contracting entity, service description, recipient status, and applicable tax treatment. The relevant definitions and provisions are in the IGST Act; CBIC’s GST FAQ discusses online database access and related foreign-service treatment. If reverse-charge tax is due, any credit for it remains subject to the ordinary ITC rules.

Business use, exempt supplies, and blocked credits

The subscription must be used or intended for use in business. If you also use it personally, or it supports both taxable and exempt business supplies, the credit may need to be restricted or apportioned under the applicable rules. Section 17 of the CGST Act addresses business-purpose allocation, taxable and exempt supplies, and blocked credits. Review the actual use of the API rather than claiming the full subscription by default.

  • Business-only use for eligible business activity: the business-use condition may be met, subject to the remaining ITC requirements.
  • Mixed business and personal use: determine and apply the required restriction for non-business use.
  • Use connected with exempt supplies: assess the relevant restriction or apportionment.

See CGST Act, section 17 and confirm the calculation and current rules with a GST practitioner if your use is mixed.

Practical checks before including the subscription in an ITC claim

  1. Confirm registration. Make sure you are registered under GST for the relevant business and place. Sole-proprietor status alone does not create ITC eligibility.
  2. Identify the supplier. Record the exact legal entity and country shown in the contract and invoice; distinguish an Indian supplier from an overseas supplier.
  3. Review the tax document. Check that you have an eligible invoice or other applicable document and that recipient details and GSTIN are accurate.
  4. Check GST records and filing conditions. Verify the supplier’s reporting and tax status through the applicable GST records, and meet the relevant return and other statutory requirements.
  5. Document business use. Keep a reasonable record of how the screenshot API supports your business, and account for any personal or exempt-supply use.
  6. For a foreign supplier, determine who accounts for tax. Establish whether the transaction is an import of service, whether reverse-charge IGST applies, or whether supplier-side OIDAR collection is relevant. Ensure any tax and credit entries are handled correctly.
  7. Check the time limit before filing. The official tax information portal’s section 16 text states a time limit tied to the 30th of November following the relevant financial year or filing the relevant annual return, whichever is earlier. Check the live Act and your return circumstances before relying on that limit, since rules may change.

Screenshot API choice does not decide ITC eligibility

Choosing an API does not itself determine whether a subscription qualifies for ITC; the tax result depends on the supplier, invoice, recipient registration, actual use, and applicable GST treatment. For the product itself, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its stated features include clean captures that accept consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step configurable. It also states that bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and that it offers MCP tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. These product details do not establish the GST treatment of a particular purchase; check the legal supplier and invoice for your transaction.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one GET request. See the API documentation for parameters and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000. For your own GST treatment, check the supplier entity and invoice rather than assuming a product feature or price determines eligibility. Sign up for the free plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I claim ITC if I am not registered for GST?

No. Ordinary ITC eligibility is for a registered person; using the API for business does not replace the registration requirement.

Does a ScreenshotNeo subscription automatically qualify for ITC?

No. Eligibility depends on your registration, supplier and tax document, business use, and compliance with the applicable GST conditions.

Can I claim the full subscription if I use the API personally too?

Not necessarily. Mixed personal use and use relating to exempt supplies may restrict or require apportionment of credit.
