Yes. An Azure virtual machine can run an encoder that sends a live stream to YouTube, but that does not mean the VM will be powerful enough for your chosen settings or that the broadcast will cost nothing. Microsoft’s standard Azure free account offers a $200 credit for up to 30 days, while its separate free VM allowance applies only to specified sizes. Streaming also uses outbound data, which can incur charges.
What the Azure free account actually covers
Microsoft’s Azure free-account offer, checked October 3, 2026, includes a $200 credit usable for up to 30 days on most Azure services. The credit is temporary, not a recurring monthly allowance, and unused credit cannot be carried into later months. Marketplace products and separately licensed items may be excluded. See Azure’s free-account offer and FAQs and the Azure Plan Offer terms for current conditions.
Azure separately lists 750 hours each of certain burstable VM sizes for 12 months. That allowance is limited to the eligible sizes and applicable offer conditions; it does not make any VM you choose free. Check the Azure free-services listing for the sizes currently included, and verify the region, image, and associated resources for your deployment.
Recommended Free Tools
| Offer item | What it means for a YouTube stream |
|---|---|
| $200 credit for up to 30 days | May cover eligible Azure usage during the offer window, but does not guarantee that a particular streaming setup will stay within the credit. |
| 750 hours each of specified VM sizes for 12 months | Applies only to the listed eligible VM sizes and offer terms, not arbitrary VM configurations. |
| First 100 GB/month of internet egress | Azure lists this amount as free; usage above it may be charged at region- and zone-dependent rates. |
Will the stream stop when the $200 credit runs out?
Microsoft says you must move to pay-as-you-go by removing the spending limit when the credit is exhausted or 30 days have elapsed, whichever comes first, to continue using the account and selected free services. If you do not upgrade, the account and services are disabled. You can check the remaining credit in Cost Management. Moving to pay-as-you-go also means usage beyond applicable free amounts is billed at pay-as-you-go rates.

That 30-day credit deadline is separate from another account condition: Microsoft’s terms say free-account compute resources may be removed after more than 90 days of inactivity, with a month’s notice described on the offer page. Check the current offer details rather than treating a free-account VM as a permanent hosting arrangement.
Can a VM technically send a live stream to YouTube?
Yes, in principle. YouTube supports live streaming through an encoder, and an Azure VM can act as the computer running compatible encoding software. YouTube’s encoder-based live-streaming instructions describe the general workflow. The VM still needs an operating system and enough compute and network capacity for the encoder and stream you select.

Neither the cited Azure offer pages nor YouTube’s encoder workflow certify a specific Azure VM size for a particular stream. A free-credit balance is not a performance test: it does not establish that encoding will be smooth, that the VM has a suitable GPU, or that YouTube will receive a stable feed. YouTube has a separate encoder settings page; consult its current recommendations for your resolution and frame rate instead of assuming a universal bitrate or configuration.

Estimate bandwidth before leaving a stream on
A continuous stream sends data from Azure to the internet. Microsoft’s bandwidth pricing page lists the first 100 GB per month of internet egress as free; charges after that vary by source region or zone. Check Azure bandwidth pricing for the current rate that applies to your region and subscription.

For a rough traffic estimate, multiply the stream’s bitrate by its runtime, then convert bits to bytes. For example, at a constant bitrate of B megabits per second for H hours, the video payload is approximately B × H × 0.45 gigabytes, before protocol overhead and any other outbound traffic. A 24/7 schedule can consume the monthly allowance quickly, especially at higher bitrates. This estimate does not include VM compute, disks, IP addresses, or other billable resources.
What to check before starting a broadcast
- Confirm the offer and VM eligibility. Check the current Azure free-account terms and listed VM sizes, then verify your selected region, operating-system image, VM hours, disks, IP, and other attached resources. Do not assume the $200 credit covers every component.
- Choose the encoder and check capacity. Confirm that the VM’s OS supports your encoder and that its CPU or GPU can encode the intended resolution and frame rate. No configuration in the official pages cited here is certified for a given stream, so treat capacity as something to validate for your chosen workload.
- Use YouTube’s current stream settings. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow and settings guidance for the selected output. Copy the stream key into the encoder carefully and keep it private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Calculate the full cost and runtime. Estimate billable VM hours and stream egress, check the region-specific bandwidth rate, and compare the estimate with your available credit and free allowances. Include any additional Azure resources in the estimate.
- Decide what happens at the credit limit. If you need the stream to continue beyond the credit window, understand that upgrading to pay-as-you-go removes the spending limit and can lead to charges. If you do not upgrade, Microsoft says the account and services are disabled.
Common problems and what to check
- The VM is running, but the encoder cannot keep up: A credit balance does not indicate adequate CPU or GPU capacity. Check encoder load and output settings, then choose a VM that can handle the workload; the official sources cited here do not name a guaranteed size.
- The stream stops around the end of the offer window: Check whether the credit was exhausted or 30 days passed. Continuing requires moving to pay-as-you-go; otherwise, services are disabled under Microsoft’s offer terms.
- The bill is higher than expected: Review VM hours, attached resources, and outbound data. The 100 GB/month free egress amount is limited, and subsequent bandwidth rates vary by source region or zone.
- YouTube does not receive the broadcast: Recheck the encoder workflow, stream key, and current YouTube settings. The key is channel-specific and should not be shared publicly.
- A VM or free allowance is unavailable: Recheck the eligible size list, region, image, and subscription offer. The 750-hour allowance is not a blanket entitlement for every VM configuration.
