No—an Apple Watch does not measure blood glucose on its own. It can display readings from a separate continuous glucose monitor (CGM). Dexcom G7 Direct to Watch is a documented option that sends readings and alerts from its sensor to a compatible Apple Watch, but you still need an iPhone for setup and new sensor pairing.
How glucose readings get to an Apple Watch
In this setup, the Apple Watch is a display, not the glucose sensor. The Dexcom G7 is a prescription CGM that measures glucose in interstitial fluid using a wearable sensor and transmitter. Its readings can be viewed through a phone app, a receiver, or—when configured—a compatible Apple Watch. The FDA’s device review describes Direct to Watch as an option for receiving glucose data and alerts when the iPhone is not nearby.
Direct to Watch versus phone mirroring
| Mode | How readings reach the watch | Phone needed nearby? | Setup and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard watch display | The watch mirrors data from the iPhone app. | Yes, for the phone-to-watch connection. | Readings depend on the phone app and its connection to the watch. |
| Dexcom G7 Direct to Watch | The G7 sensor transmitter sends readings and alerts directly to the watch over Bluetooth. | Not for the direct sensor-to-watch connection once configured and working. | Use the iPhone app to pair each new sensor and enable/configure Direct to Watch. Some data-sharing features may differ; confirm current Dexcom instructions. |
Direct to Watch does not make the whole CGM system phone-free: the iPhone app is needed to start and configure a new sensor session. Dexcom says the watch may fall back to copying from the phone if the direct connection temporarily fails; keep the phone nearby when the interface indicates that fallback. See the Dexcom Direct to Watch FAQs for current behavior and setup guidance.

Dexcom lists an Apple Watch Series 6 or later with watchOS 10 or later, an iPhone with iOS 17 or later, and a compatible G7 app as requirements. Requirements can change, so check Dexcom’s live compatibility and setup information before buying or updating devices. A cellular plan is not required for the watch-to-sensor Bluetooth connection.

Why glucose-measuring watch claims deserve caution
The FDA states that no smartwatch or smart ring has been authorized, cleared, or approved to measure or estimate blood glucose on its own. That warning is different from an app displaying readings from an authorized CGM that uses a sensor. The FDA cautions that inaccurate readings can lead to medication errors, including an incorrect insulin dose or use of medicines that rapidly lower glucose. Do not rely on a watch or ring claiming non-invasive glucose measurement; ask a healthcare provider about an appropriate authorized device when medically accurate measurements matter. Read the FDA safety communication.

Keep the G7 app and watch software current
Software matters because missing or delayed alerts can affect how useful a CGM display is. In a July 24, 2025 notice, the FDA described a correction for older Dexcom G7 app versions: a transmitter hardware or firmware failure could end a sensor session without a “Sensor Failed” alert, leaving the user unaware that readings and alerts had stopped. The notice said affected app versions had to be updated. Read the FDA notice.
