Yes—if the Android apps and websites you rely on can handle your actual school or work tasks. A tablet can be a practical main computer for browser-based work, documents, email, video calls, research, and note-taking. But desktop-style windows, a keyboard, or a monitor do not guarantee that a particular app, course portal, or workplace system will work as required. Test your essential tasks on the exact tablet before giving up access to a laptop.
When an Android tablet is a realistic laptop substitute
A tablet is a plausible replacement when your daily work is mostly in a browser or Android apps, and those apps support the features you need. Routine writing, reading, email, video calls, research, and note-taking can suit this setup if you are comfortable working with touch or add a keyboard and pointer.
This is a workflow-based judgment, not a guarantee for every tablet or app. App support affects whether windows can resize and whether an app functions well in a desktop-style layout. Samsung’s DeX developer guidance describes those limitations.
What to check before relying on one for school or work
Required apps, websites, and features
List the apps and services you must use, then try the specific tasks you depend on—not just whether a site opens. Check document editing and file handling, sign-in steps, course or workplace portals, and any required assessment or proctoring workflow. Windowing and external-display support
On supported large-screen devices, Android desktop windowing can open apps in separate windows that you can resize and arrange. With a supported configuration, an external monitor may show a mirrored display or a separate desktop session, depending on the device and settings. Google cautions: “This feature isn’t available on all devices and the experience may vary.” Check Google’s Android desktop windowing and connected-display guidance for the relevant device; a monitor can add workspace, but it cannot fix an app limitation.
Typing and pointer comfort
A keyboard and trackpad or mouse can make long writing and window management more comfortable. Android’s large-screen and form-factor guidance describes tablet setups with a keyboard folio and touchpad. Check that an accessory fits your exact model and that pointer input works as you expect; accessories improve input, not app compatibility.

Samsung Galaxy Tab users: check the exact DeX model and connection
Samsung DeX adds a Samsung-specific desktop-style option, but support depends on the tablet and how you plan to connect. Samsung lists DeX-compatible Galaxy Tab families including the Tab S7, S8, S9, S10, and S11 series, as well as the Tab A11+. Its compatibility guidance also says the Tab S9 FE, S9 FE+, S10 FE, S10 FE+, and S10 Lite are not compatible with HDMI output; the listed FE models and S10 Lite are also not compatible with wireless DeX. Confirm the exact model and connection on Samsung’s DeX compatibility page, since a family name alone can hide exceptions.
Even on a compatible model, DeX does not make every Android app behave like desktop software. Samsung says older apps may not work correctly and apps that do not meet multi-window requirements may appear in fixed-size rather than resizable windows. Check each critical app using Samsung’s developer guidance.

Choose based on the work you need to finish
- Likely suitable: Your essential tasks work in Android apps or browser pages on the exact tablet, and its touch, keyboard, and pointer workflow is comfortable enough for your day.
- Test carefully first: Your work depends on a specific desktop website, complex document editing, specialized software, an external display, or a school or workplace assessment system. Verify the exact task with the provider and on the tablet.
- Keep access to a laptop or desktop: A required service is available only in a desktop operating system, or you cannot confirm that its Android version has the features you need. Device and app support vary, so a tablet-only setup would be a gamble.
A practical compatibility check before you switch
- Write down the essential school or work tasks and the apps, websites, sign-ins, file types, and equipment each one requires.
- On the exact tablet, complete those tasks with the apps or browser you intend to use. Check any required editing, uploads, assessments, and file transfers.
- Try the intended input setup—touch alone or a keyboard and pointer—and, if needed, the exact display connection you plan to use.
- Ask your school or employer about any required portal, assessment, or software compatibility you cannot verify yourself.
- Keep another computer available until every essential workflow has been confirmed on the tablet.
