Possibly, but the computer category alone cannot tell you. Compare the average power drawn at the wall by each complete setup while it runs the same stream, then apply your local electricity rate and operating hours. The sources available do not establish a controlled Chromebook-versus-desktop result, so any claim that one is always cheaper—or a specific monthly saving—would be guesswork.

How to compare the electricity cost

Measure the whole setup, not a component specification. A processor’s thermal design power, a charger’s maximum rating, or a brief idle reading does not show what the computer and its connected equipment draw while streaming. A plug-in electricity meter can show wall power for the complete setup; take a representative average while each device performs the same workload. iTechGuides’ electricity-cost guide describes this measurement approach.

  1. Match the workload. Use the same video, stream quality, software or streaming method, and operating conditions on both devices where possible.
  2. Measure average wall watts. Include the computer, display, and peripherals that would actually remain powered. Keep the connected equipment consistent between measurements where practical.
  3. Choose the comparison period. Use the same number of hours for both setups. For a month-long estimate, use the hours you expect to operate each device during that month.
  4. Apply your local electricity rate. Use the rate you pay per kilowatt-hour (kWh), not a rate from another region.

Electricity cost = (average wall power in watts ÷ 1,000) × operating hours × electricity price per kWh. This estimates energy charges only; it does not include equipment purchases, accessories, network costs, or cloud-service fees.

What can make either setup cheaper?

A Chromebook may draw less power than a particular desktop, but the answer depends on the models and what is left running. A desktop with a monitor and other equipment included in the measurement could compare differently from a bare computer; likewise, the Chromebook’s display and peripherals count if they stay on. Measure the actual setups rather than assuming the device category settles the comparison.

ENERGY STAR’s computer guidance covers efficiency across operating modes, including off, sleep, and idle, and applies to desktops and notebooks. Its page says the computer specification took effect in October 2025. ENERGY STAR also says certified computers use about 30–40% less energy than standard models. That is a general statement about certified computers—not a prediction of savings for a Chromebook versus a desktop streaming continuously.

Check whether the device can sustain the stream

Power cost is only useful if the stream can run reliably. YouTube describes webcam, mobile, and encoder streaming methods; an encoder can be software or a hardware device and supports use cases such as screen sharing, gameplay, and external audio/video equipment. YouTube’s documentation does not establish that every Chromebook model supports every encoder or workflow, so check compatibility for the specific device and software before relying on it. YouTube’s encoder setup guide also lists cloud services for continuous prerecorded streams that do not require a dedicated PC.

  • Confirm that the chosen device and streaming method can produce your intended stream.
  • Make sure available upload bandwidth is comfortably above the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube advises leaving room above the bitrate rather than using all available upload capacity.
  • Use a reliable network and test the setup before depending on an unattended stream. YouTube warns: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.”
  • Preview the stream, confirm that it appears on the channel and watch pages, and monitor audio and video quality.

These checks matter for a 24/7 stream: a low power bill does not compensate for repeated interruptions. YouTube’s practical advice is in its streaming tips.

Account for cloud streaming as a third option

If the stream uses prerecorded video, running it locally on a Chromebook or desktop is not the only approach. YouTube’s encoder guide lists cloud services for continuous prerecorded streaming without a dedicated computer. Compare any service’s current fees and terms with the electricity estimate; the guide does not establish that cloud hosting costs less overall.

For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to loop continuously, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The computer at home does not have to stay on. StreamNeo supports uploaded video rather than a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay powered at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. Automatic recovery helps resume the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
