Yes. On supported Android phones and tablets, Google Gemini can place calls, compose and send SMS, use WhatsApp for calls and messages, and perform selected device actions such as toggling Wi‑Fi or turning on the flashlight. The result depends on permissions, your default phone and messaging apps, whether Google is the default digital assistant, lock-screen settings, account restrictions, and device or regional availability.
Gemini is an interface to Android features, not an unrestricted replacement for every app. Emergency calls should be made directly from the device’s Phone app, and several messaging, notification, privacy, and lock-screen limits matter before you rely on a request.
What Gemini can control on Android
Gemini’s Android integrations fall into four practical groups:

- Phone calls: It can call saved contacts, businesses, and numbers through the device’s calling app.
- SMS: It can compose and send text messages through the phone’s default messaging app.
- WhatsApp: On Android, it can call or send messages through WhatsApp when that integration is available.
- Device assistance: With the right default-assistant and notification settings, it can manage selected settings, alarms, timers, media, notifications, photos, screenshots, and other quick actions.
These integrations are separate. Permission to use the Phone app does not automatically grant access to SMS, WhatsApp, notifications, or device controls.

Requirements to check first
Phone and account basics
- An Android phone or tablet that supports the Gemini mobile app.
- An active mobile plan for cellular calls and SMS.
- The Gemini mobile app and a signed-in Google account.
- Saved contact information. Contact syncing can improve matching, but Gemini may also need access to contacts stored only on the device.
Permissions and defaults
For calls, allow the Google app (which hosts Gemini) to use the Phone permission. Call Logs and Contacts permissions can improve contact matching and let Gemini find device contacts that are not synced to your Google Account.
For SMS, allow the Google app’s SMS permission and make sure the intended messaging app is the default SMS app. If the request should use a particular integration, identify it in the prompt with @Phone or @Messages.
For device controls, Google must be selected as the device’s default digital assistant app. The exact menu names vary by Android manufacturer, but the setting is normally under Android Settings, Apps, Default apps, or Digital assistant. Reading or replying to Android notifications additionally requires notification access for the Google app.

Making a phone call with Gemini
What it can call
Gemini can call a contact, business, or phone number using the phone’s calling app. Natural requests include “Can you call them?” after identifying a person, or a direct request such as “Call the downtown clinic.” Confirm the name or number Gemini displays before the call starts, particularly when several contacts have similar names.
How Gemini chooses the calling app
Gemini normally uses the last calling app used with that contact. If it uses the Phone integration, it uses the device’s default Phone app. To request the integration explicitly, include @Phone in the prompt. You can also change the default phone app in Android’s default-app settings.

Call setup and failure checks
- Open Gemini and verify that you are using the mobile app, not a web session.
- Check that the device has mobile service and that the contact or number is saved correctly.
- In Android app permissions, allow the Google app to use the Phone permission. Allow Contacts and Call Logs if contact matching is unreliable.
- If Gemini selects the wrong calling service, set the preferred Phone app as Android’s default or add
@Phoneto the request.
The Phone integration cannot accept or reject incoming calls. Depending on your settings, some actions may still be handled by Google Assistant instead of Gemini.
Emergency calls are different
Do not use Gemini’s Phone integration for emergency services. Google’s warning is explicit: “Don’t use the Phone app in Gemini to call emergency services. Instead, use your device’s calling app directly to make an emergency call.” Open the device’s Phone app and place the emergency call there so the phone’s emergency-handling path is used.
Sending SMS messages
Compose and send a text
Gemini can send an SMS through the default messaging app. A request such as Text [contact name] [message] gives Gemini the recipient and content in one step. Review both before sending; an incorrect contact match or dictated word can change the meaning of a message.
- Confirm that the device has an active mobile plan and that the recipient is saved in Contacts.
- Check that the Google app has SMS permission.
- Verify the app you want to send from is Android’s default SMS app.
- Ask Gemini to send the message, or specify
@Messageswhen you want the Messages integration. - Read the composed text and recipient name before approving the send action.
What the Messages integration cannot do
- It cannot directly read or summarize the message history inside the messaging app.
- It cannot create or message group chats through the documented integration.
- It cannot read or reply to messages in notifications through that integration. Notification replies are a separate Device assistance feature and require notification access.
Those limits mean Gemini can be useful for drafting a new one-to-one SMS, but it is not a full search and management interface for your message archive.
Calling and messaging through WhatsApp
On Android, Gemini can call or send messages through WhatsApp when the WhatsApp integration is available and connected. This is separate from SMS, so an SMS permission or default SMS setting does not establish WhatsApp access.

The documented WhatsApp integration has important boundaries. It cannot directly read or summarize WhatsApp message history, send or read images, GIFs, or memes, or handle audio and video messages. Treat a request for those media types as unsupported rather than assuming Gemini will convert it to text or send it another way.

Set Google as the digital assistant
Google’s Device assistance documentation says: “If you want Gemini to manage certain device settings and take certain quick device actions, set the Google app (which hosts Gemini) as your device’s default digital assistant app.” If another assistant remains the default, Gemini may explain how to change a setting without being able to change it directly.
Supported examples
With Device assistance enabled, Gemini can perform selected quick actions, including:
- Toggle Airplane mode, Battery Saver, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb, NFC, and Wi‑Fi.
- Turn the flashlight on or off and control volume.
- Set or manage alarms and timers.
- Control media playback.
- Open apps.
- Take a photo or screenshot.
- Power off the device.
- Read and reply to Android notifications when notification access is granted.
The documentation says “and more,” but the exact list is device- and software-dependent. Do not assume that every setting exposed by Android is available as a Gemini command.
Notification access is a separate switch
Device controls and notification handling are not the same permission. If you want Gemini to read or reply to notifications, grant notification access to the Google app in Android’s notification-access settings. Some Device assistance features will not work until their required setting or permission is enabled.

Using Gemini while the phone is locked
Opt-in controls
Gemini has separate lock-screen options for using the assistant without unlocking and for allowing calls and messages without unlocking. Enable the relevant option in Gemini’s settings; turning on one does not necessarily turn on the other.
When enabled, lock-screen help can include calls or text responses, Maps information, selected reminders or notes, alarms, timers, media controls, the flashlight, volume, and other supported device controls. A request involving personal information may still require you to unlock the phone.
Device and account exceptions
Google says Gemini is available on most Android phone and tablet lock screens, but behavior varies by device. Google’s Pixel Tablet instructions require unlocking the tablet to use Gemini. Some features have age requirements and are unavailable for supervised accounts.
Before relying on a locked-screen command, test it with a non-sensitive action such as the flashlight. Keep the phone locked and ask for a private contact, message detail, or account-specific item; an unlock prompt is expected when the request exposes protected information.

Privacy, encryption, and user control
When Connected Apps help with calls or messages, Google says Gemini mobile apps may process Gemini Apps activity where available, device calling and messaging logs, contact information, and device information and settings. This information helps Gemini choose an app and connect you with the intended person.

Google says messages created and sent with Gemini are not end-to-end encrypted by Google. That is a meaningful consideration for confidential communications: review the message content and recipient, and use a communication method whose security properties meet your needs.
You can disconnect supported calling and messaging apps in Gemini’s Connected Apps settings. Gemini activity can be deleted in Gemini Apps Activity. Gemini can use the documented mobile Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Device assistance Connected Apps when Keep Activity is off, but a request that needs another Google service may fail or be limited in that state.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Gemini says it cannot place the call
- Confirm mobile service and the phone number.
- Grant the Google app Phone permission.
- Check Contacts and Call Logs permissions if the contact is not found.
- Set the intended Phone app as default or add
@Phone.
The wrong person or app is selected
Use the recipient’s full name, include the phone number, correct the saved contact, and specify @Phone or @Messages. Gemini may follow the last calling app used with that contact, so review the selected app before continuing.

- Check SMS permission for the Google app.
- Verify the default SMS app and active mobile plan.
- Make sure the recipient is saved in Contacts.
- Ask Gemini again with
@Messages, then approve the final recipient and text.
A setting command only produces instructions
Set Google as the default digital assistant app. If the command concerns notifications, also grant notification access. If the requested control is not among the supported device actions, use Android’s Settings app directly.
It works unlocked but not on the lock screen
Enable the separate Gemini lock-screen option and the calls-and-messages-without-unlocking option if needed. Unlock for personal information. On a Pixel Tablet, follow the device requirement to unlock before using Gemini.
