Ambient AI scribing may ease some of the documentation burden linked to GP burnout, but it is not a proven solution to telemedicine burnout overall. Studies in general practice and ambulatory care report encouraging results, yet they vary in size, setting and design. The evidence does not establish that every GP—or every telemedicine workflow—will benefit.
What ambient AI scribing does in a GP consultation
An ambient AI scribe listens to a clinician–patient conversation and turns it into a draft note for the electronic patient record. It is intended to support documentation, not make clinical decisions or replace the GP’s judgment. Clinicians still need to check the draft, correct it and decide what belongs in the record.
That distinction matters: the software may reduce the work of creating a note, but review remains part of the workflow. Drafts can contain transcription or summary errors, omit details or lose clinical nuance. The clinician remains responsible for the final record. NHS England’s guidance on AI-enabled ambient scribing addresses its use in health and care settings.
What the evidence says about workload and burnout
Studies have reported lower documentation burden and improvements in some measures associated with exhaustion. They do not all measure the same thing: some ask clinicians how the tool affected their work, while others assess burnout-related outcomes before and after implementation or use a randomized design.
#1 Best Overall
- Omnidirectional Microphone - It is not a Speaker or Speakerphone, it is a condenser microphone. The microphone has an omnidirectional pickup pattern with a pickup distance of 11.5 ft, making it easy to capture the most subtle sounds from 360° directions and transmit the sound more loud and clear. Participants can hear each other without raising their voices.
- Made for Conferences - This microphone is perfect for small or medium meetings over an internet network by using Skype/GoToMeeting/WebEx/Hangouts/Fuze/VoIP/Zoom and other softwares. You can also use it for court reports, seminars, remote training, business negotiations, video chats, etc.
- Plug & Play, No Drivers Required - The microphone is compatible with all operating systems - both Windows and macOS. You just need to plug the microphone to start recording. If there is no response after inserting the mic, please go to the microphone setting of your computer and select the mic as the INPUT device.
- Convenient Mute Button - Quickly mute/unmute your microphone. The built-in blue indicator light for checking whether the USB microphone is working.
- Well Designed Cable - The microphone is constructed of sturdy and metal material and the base is fitted with an anti-slip mat which keeps it stable on desktop during use. It is small, convenient and does not require much space when in use. Connected with a 1.8m nylon shielded wire, it effectively eliminates signal interferences to achieve the best recording results.
| Study and setting | Finding | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| npj Digital Medicine, 2026: prospective, multicentre, multi-perspective before-and-after study in Dutch general practice with 12 GPs and GP trainees. | The authors report reduced documentation time. | A small study; its authors call for further work on unintended effects on care quality and accessibility. |
| BMJ Health & Care Informatics, 2026: survey of 141 current UK GP users. | 80% reported spending less time creating documentation; 70% reported lower cognitive workload during consultations. | These are respondents’ self-reported experiences, not independently timed reductions. |
| JAMA Network Open, 2025: multicentre quality-improvement evaluation across six US academic and community health systems. | The proportion of participating ambulatory clinicians reporting burnout fell from 51.9% before use to 38.8% after 30 days. | The study analyzed 263 clinicians providing direct ambulatory care; 272 of 451 enrolled clinicians completed both surveys. It was a voluntary pre/post evaluation, so the change is an association in this sample, not proof that the scribe caused the decline. |
| Pragmatic randomized implementation trial, 2026: 66 ambulatory practitioners over 24 weeks. | Work exhaustion/interpersonal disengagement was 0.44 points lower on a five-point scale; professional fulfillment did not significantly improve. | This is a distinct randomized result in a limited practitioner population, not a finding that every dimension of burnout improved. |
Taken together, these findings support testing scribing as a possible way to reduce note-writing work and some exhaustion measures. They do not show that it resolves the many causes of burnout, or establish a telemedicine-specific effect. The evidence includes general-practice and ambulatory settings; it should not be treated as proof of equal results in every remote-consultation workflow.
Patient consent and trust are part of the workflow
In the UK GP survey, 63% of the 141 respondents said they routinely obtained patient consent before using AI during a consultation. Among that consent-seeking group, 89% reported that 10% or fewer patients declined. These figures describe survey respondents, not all UK practices or patients. The survey report is useful for understanding reported practice, but a clinic should establish its own consent process and follow the rules that apply in its jurisdiction.

Patients should know when an AI scribe is being used and what will happen to the conversation and generated note. Practices also need to understand the product’s data handling, assign responsibility for staff training and decide how use will be monitored. These are implementation and governance questions, not optional extras to consider after rollout.
How a practice can evaluate an AI scribe
Before adopting an ambient scribe, evaluate the complete consultation-to-record workflow rather than relying on a headline claim about time saved.

- Set a baseline. Identify the documentation tasks and workload concerns the practice wants to address. Decide how it will assess changes, and distinguish measured time from staff perceptions.
- Check workflow fit. Map how the tool handles the consultation, produces a draft and transfers or adds information to the practice’s principal electronic patient record. Confirm the integration details with the vendor and the practice’s system arrangements.
- Review note quality. Define who checks each draft and how to catch errors, omissions or loss of nuance before the note is finalized. Make sure clinicians can edit or reject content that is inaccurate or inappropriate.
- Test for equitable performance. Evaluate how the system handles the accents, speech differences, complex consultations and multilingual conversations encountered by the practice. Do not assume performance is uniform across patients.
- Set consent and governance procedures. Document how patients are informed, how consent is obtained, how data are handled and how staff are trained. Align the process with local requirements and applicable guidance.
- Monitor after implementation. Check whether documentation burden actually changes in the practice and look for problems with note quality, consultation flow, accessibility or patient experience. Use those findings to adjust or stop the workflow if needed.
There is no head-to-head vendor comparison in the cited evidence, so it does not establish a best product. A practice should assess specific products against its own record system, patient population, governance requirements and consultation needs rather than infer compatibility or suitability from category-level results.

Burnout is broader than the time spent writing notes. An ambient scribe targets documentation work, and the studies above report selected outcomes rather than showing that it addresses every source of workload or organizational strain. If a practice pilots one, it should evaluate it as a focused workflow intervention alongside its wider efforts to improve working conditions—not as a substitute for them.
