Yes—an air purifier can reduce wildfire-smoke particles indoors, but it cannot guarantee that a home will be completely smoke-free. A portable purifier treats the room it is sized for; a compatible high-efficiency HVAC filter can help across a home. How much either option helps depends on room size, filter and device performance, airflow, and how much smoke gets inside.
The available laboratory figures are from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) chamber tests of do-it-yourself fan-and-filter designs, not proprietary testing or a comparison of commercial purifier models. They show how design changes affected measured clean air delivery in that test setup—not what any specific purifier will achieve in your home.
What “clear the smoke” means in practice
Wildfire smoke contains fine particles that can enter buildings. Filtration can lower indoor particle levels by drawing air through a filter that captures particles. It does not seal a home against smoke, remove every particle, or guarantee a particular indoor air quality.

EPA’s Indoor Air Filtration fact sheet, updated July 28, 2026, says: “Using high-efficiency HVAC filters, portable air cleaners (PACs), and do-it-yourself (DIY) air cleaners, alone or in combination, can reduce smoke levels indoors.” The practical goal during smoky conditions is therefore to reduce exposure—especially in a room where household members can spend time—not to promise a completely smoke-free house.

How to size a portable purifier for wildfire smoke
CADR, or clean air delivery rate, indicates how quickly a cleaner delivers filtered air. For smoke, use the smoke CADR listed for the device and compare it with the room area. EPA recommends a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet.
- Example: EPA’s wildfire guidance gives a 120-square-foot room as an example requiring a CADR of 80.
- For a larger room: Use the same area-based rule to find a larger smoke CADR, or consider a suitable cleaner for each space.
- For ceilings higher than eight feet: Choose a larger-rated device than the floor-area calculation alone would suggest.
CADR is a selection aid, not a promise of identical performance in every home. Room layout, air leakage, how long the cleaner runs, and its fan setting all affect results. EPA points consumers to the AHAM Verifide directory for cleaner ratings.

What EPA’s DIY chamber tests found
In controlled chamber testing published in November 2022, EPA used simulated smoke from smoldering pine needles to measure wildfire-smoke CADR for several DIY fan-and-filter designs. Higher CADR means more filtered-air delivery in that test setup.

EPA also reported that adding a cardboard shroud increased CADR by 40% without changing cost or footprint in the tested setup. These results compare specific DIY assemblies under controlled conditions. They are not a whole-home guarantee, and they do not establish the performance of a particular commercial purifier.

How to set up a cleaner-air room
- Choose a room people can use. Pick one large enough for the household; a bedroom with an attached bathroom can be practical.
- Reduce outdoor air entering the room. Close doors and windows while maintaining emergency egress. Use air conditioning or fans to stay cool.
- Filter the room’s air. Place a properly sized portable cleaner where air can move freely around it, then run it continuously on the highest tolerable setting.
- Limit indoor particle sources. Avoid smoking, candles, aerosols, and high-heat cooking while the room is being used as a cleaner-air space.
- Spend as much time there as possible during heavy smoke. Check the filter; if it becomes heavily soiled, it may need replacement sooner than the normal manufacturer schedule.
Choose mechanical filtration and avoid ozone-producing devices
For smoke particles, look for mechanical filtration, such as HEPA or other pleated filters, and check that a portable cleaner is CARB-certified. EPA recommends CARB-certified cleaners because they produce little or no ozone. EPA does not recommend electronic air cleaners for smoke: their effectiveness is uncertain, and they may produce ozone.

- Run a portable cleaner continuously at its highest fan setting when practical; higher fan speeds generally move more air through the filter.
- Keep the unit’s intake and outlet unobstructed so air can circulate.
- Keep windows and doors closed when safe, and avoid indoor activities that add particles.
- For central HVAC, use MERV 13 or higher only if compatible with the system, and run the fan as often as possible.
Operating a fan continuously may add noise and energy use; balancing those trade-offs against a quieter setting is a household decision. A lower setting may be easier to tolerate, but EPA’s guidance favors the highest setting that can be used.
