Yes: when you send a prompt to a hosted AI service, the provider processes it. Its policies may also allow storage, automated safety checks, or limited human review. That does not mean a person routinely reads every conversation. Whether your content is used to improve models or how long it is retained depends on the provider, account type, settings, features you use, and exceptions for safety or legal needs. There is no universal retention period.
What does it mean for an AI company to “see” a prompt?
The service has to process the material you submit to generate a response. That can include more than typed text: depending on the product and feature, it may include uploaded files or images, voice transcripts or recordings, feedback, and information brought in through connected apps or search grounding.
Processing is not the same as routine human reading. Providers may use automated systems for safety or abuse monitoring, and some policies permit trained reviewers to examine a subset of content for specified purposes. Whether a conversation is eligible for that review depends on the provider and circumstances; the policies below do not establish that every chat is read by a person.
How the major providers’ policies differ
These are policy descriptions for the account and product types named, not a ranking of which service is “most private.” A provider’s consumer app, business service, and API can have different rules. Policies can also vary by region and change over time.

Why a training opt-out is not a deletion control
Training, chat history, backend retention, and deletion are different things. A control that excludes new chats from model improvement does not necessarily remove them from visible history, stop short-term storage, or prevent safety processing. Conversely, deleting a visible chat does not prove that every retained copy or separately reviewed record is immediately erased. Google’s reviewed-chat retention is one explicit example; its policy says that data is not deleted when the user deletes activity.
Feature choices matter too. Feedback can change how an otherwise opted-out conversation is handled. Uploads, grounding, saved product conversations, and API file or cache features can have their own storage rules. Check the policy for the exact product and feature rather than treating a single privacy toggle as a blanket guarantee.

How to reduce exposure before you submit a prompt
- Identify the account and product. Check whether you are using a personal app, an organization-managed plan, or an API, and whether a cloud host or connected feature adds separate terms.
- Check the control that matches your goal. For ChatGPT individual use, review Settings for “Improve the model for everyone” or use OpenAI’s Privacy Portal option, “Do not train on my content.” For Gemini Apps, review Keep Activity and the activity auto-delete choice. For Claude consumer use, review the model-improvement setting and whether a chat is incognito. These controls address model improvement or activity handling as described above; do not assume they guarantee zero retention.
- Review feature-specific handling. Before uploading files, sending feedback, using search or Maps grounding, or using a file, cache, or Live API feature, check whether that feature adds retention beyond ordinary prompts.
- For work data, confirm the organization’s terms and settings. Ask an administrator what retention, access, and contractual controls apply. A business label or training default alone is not a promise that content is inaccessible to administrators or exempt from safety and legal processes.
- Delete what you no longer need using the product’s deletion controls. Treat removal from visible history as distinct from backend deletion or retention of a separately reviewed copy; use the provider’s policy to understand the stated effect.
What should you avoid putting into an AI chat?
Do not submit passwords, authentication secrets, confidential work information, private client data, or sensitive personal details unless the service and your organization explicitly approve that use. A consumer setting can reduce training use or activity history, but it does not make a hosted service equivalent to local-only processing or a contractually enabled zero-retention deployment.
