No reliable evidence here shows that an AI can take a viva or job interview as you and secure a pass or job. “AI interviewer” usually refers to a tool used by researchers or employers—not a system acting as a candidate’s proxy. AI can help you prepare, but having it answer in your place may breach your institution’s rules or an employer’s requirements.

What “AI interviewer” means in practice

The phrase can describe systems with very different users and purposes. The operator matters: a research team may use AI to interview study participants; an employer may use it to ask applicants questions and help assess responses; a candidate may use AI for practice. None of these examples establishes that a model can impersonate a candidate or reliably pass an assessment for them.

Use Who operates it What it does Who decides the outcome
Research interview Researchers Anthropic says its Interviewer helps plan studies, holds real-time conversations with follow-up questions, and synthesizes responses for researcher validation and interpretation. Anthropic’s description reports a global pilot with almost 81,000 participants across 159 countries and 70 languages; those figures describe research participation, not interview passes or job offers. Researchers interpret and validate findings.
Employer screening Employer or hiring team Greenhouse’s optional Voice AI feature presents recruiter-configured questions, records audio and video responses, transcribes them, and compares transcripts with recruiter-set rubric criteria to recommend a score. Greenhouse’s FAQ describes this workflow. Recruiters or hiring managers can accept, change, or disregard the recommended score and retain hiring decisions.
Candidate preparation Candidate AI can be used for practice questions, rehearsal, and feedback, if the relevant assessment or employer rules permit that assistance. The candidate must provide their own answers in the actual assessment.

These examples do not show that AI can sit an interview as you, prove your knowledge, or get you hired. The sources above provide no attributable statistic for AI pass rates in vivas or job interviews.

Why a viva is different from an AI-assisted practice session

A viva assesses the candidate’s own subject knowledge and understanding of their work. The University of East London defines viva voce in its 2025–26 regulations as “a meeting held to assess a student’s subject knowledge and to gain a clearer understanding of how they completed a particular piece of work.” Its guidance says candidates may need to explain their approach and demonstrate ownership. Read UEL’s 2025–26 academic integrity and misconduct regulations.

Rules are institution- and assessment-specific, but some explicitly address unauthorized AI assistance and impersonation. UEL’s 2025–26 regulations list unauthorized information during a viva, impersonating or knowingly being impersonated, and unauthorized generative-AI answers as examples of academic misconduct. Fordham University separately identifies having a proxy take an examination, test, or quiz as an academic-integrity violation; the sanctions it describes apply to Fordham, not to every institution. Fordham’s standards of academic integrity explain its policy.

Online oral exams may include integrity checks

The University of York’s research-degree policy says, “PGRs are expected to work with the examiners to ensure the integrity of oral examinations.” It gives generative AI and earpieces as examples of unfair means a candidate may be asked to show they are not using, including through camera positioning in an online exam. York says an integrity concern can lead to proceedings being stopped and a misconduct procedure being initiated. These expectations are specific to York research-degree oral exams. See York’s research-degree assessment policy.

University College Cork’s 2025–26 examination policy says unauthorized, unacknowledged generative-AI use can breach academic integrity and describes oral examination as a way to investigate authenticity and understanding. It also states that AI-detection software is not sanctioned for detecting or investigating alleged misconduct. That is UCC’s policy; it is not a claim that every institution follows the same approach. Read UCC’s 2025–26 examination and assessment policy.

How AI can help you prepare without taking your place

Preparation is different from having a system generate answers during an assessed conversation. If AI assistance is allowed, use it to practise your own reasoning and improve your explanations—not to misrepresent who is answering.

  • Practise likely questions: Ask for questions based on your thesis topic, role description, or supplied interview brief. Treat the output as practice material, not a forecast of the exact questions.
  • Rehearse concise explanations: Explain your methods, decisions, limitations, and contribution aloud in your own words. For a viva, be ready to connect claims to your actual work; for a job interview, connect examples to your real experience.
  • Request feedback: Ask AI to flag answers that are unclear, unsupported, or too long. Check any factual or technical feedback yourself.
  • Prepare follow-ups: Use practice to explore why you made a choice, what alternatives you considered, and what you would change. A memorized script is less useful when the examiner or interviewer asks a follow-up.

Before using AI with confidential research, unpublished work, personal data, or employer materials, also consider the applicable confidentiality and data-handling rules. The policies cited here do not establish which preparation tools are best or what every institution or employer permits.

Check the rules before using AI in an actual assessment

  1. For a viva: Read the rules for your degree, department, examination, and academic year. Check what assistance is permitted, whether AI use must be disclosed, and what counts as unauthorized material. Ask your supervisor or graduate office if the wording is unclear.
  2. For a job interview: Ask the employer or recruiter what assistance is permitted during the interview and whether any AI use must be disclosed. Do not assume that a tool used by the employer is also authorized for a candidate.
  3. During the assessment: Answer as yourself and follow the stated format. If a technical or accessibility need affects your setup, arrange an approved accommodation rather than relying on an undisclosed tool.

Policies vary, so a rule at UEL, Fordham, York, or UCC should not be treated as a universal law or as the policy for your own assessment. Check the current written instructions that apply to you.
