Yes—but only through defined, permissioned paths. On Android, an assistant such as Gemini can perform selected device actions, launch apps, use supported connected-app integrations, or automate a limited set of interfaces on eligible devices. It does not receive blanket access to every installed app, and it cannot grant itself sensitive permissions.
The practical distinction is whether you want the assistant to open an app, invoke a function the developer exposed, or operate the app’s visible interface. Those are different technologies with different requirements and limits.
What “control an Android app” can mean
People often use “control” to describe three different levels of assistance. Opening an app is the least extensive: the assistant launches it, but the app remains responsible for everything that happens afterward. An integration is narrower but more useful for repeatable tasks because the app exposes specific actions or functions. UI automation is the closest to a person tapping through screens, but it is currently a controlled preview rather than a universal Android capability.

What Gemini can do on an Android phone today
Device assistance handles defined phone actions
Google’s Device assistance connected app is designed for Gemini’s Android mobile app. With the relevant access enabled, Gemini can open installed apps, create or manage alarms and timers, control media, take photos or screenshots, and perform certain supported settings actions. It can also read and reply to Android notifications when notification access is granted.

These are commands implemented by the assistant and Android, not a general license to operate any app. For example, asking Gemini to open a messaging app can launch that app; it does not imply that Gemini can navigate every conversation, alter every setting, or send any message without a supported integration and any required confirmation.
Permissions determine which actions appear
- Notification access: required when Gemini needs to read or reply to notifications. Without it, notification-based requests cannot work.
- Default digital assistant: some quick device actions and settings controls require the Google app, which hosts Gemini’s assistant capabilities on Android, to be selected as the default digital assistant. Other Gemini tasks may still work when it is not the default.
- Device assistance connection: the Device assistance connected app must remain connected for those device actions. You can disconnect it from Connected Apps settings.
Android presents consent prompts for sensitive access. A prompt that was dismissed, denied, or later revoked can make a command fail even though the same command worked previously.
How to enable the supported controls
- Install or update the Gemini mobile app on your Android phone and sign in to the account you intend to use.
- Open Gemini’s settings area and review Connected Apps. Look for Device assistance and connect it if the option is offered on your device.
- When Gemini needs to read or reply to notifications, follow its prompt to enable Notification access for Gemini. Android may take you to a system settings page where you must approve the access.
- If a device action reports that Gemini must be the default assistant, open Android’s default digital-assistant setting and select the Google app. The exact menu name can vary by Android release and phone manufacturer.
- Try one simple command, such as opening an app or setting a timer. If it succeeds, test the more specific action you actually need; support is task-specific.
To remove access, return to Connected Apps and disconnect Device assistance or another connected integration. Google states that an app can be disconnected at any time in Connected Apps settings.

Connected Apps: useful integrations, not unrestricted app access
What a connected app can expose
Gemini’s Connected Apps system lets supported services perform particular tasks after you connect them. Google’s examples include creating calendar events, searching across productivity apps, playing media, searching supported gallery apps, and making calls or sending messages through supported default apps. The available list depends on the assistant, app, account, device, and rollout region.

Connection is an opt-in relationship. Gemini can use only the actions the integration makes available, and the app may show its own confirmation or authentication screen. A music integration might start playback but not edit every playlist setting; a calendar integration might create an event but not expose all administrative controls.
Check the exact action before relying on it
Open Connected Apps in Gemini and inspect the individual app and actions shown there. Read any permission explanation and complete the app’s sign-in or consent flow. If the app is listed but the command is rejected, the missing piece may be an unsupported action rather than a broken permission.
Disconnecting an app removes the connection for future requests, but it does not uninstall the app or erase information already stored by that app. Reconnecting may require the consent flow again.

How developers make app features available to assistants
App Actions map requests to declared destinations
App Actions are Google Assistant integrations in which a developer declares capabilities, commonly in a file named shortcuts.xml. A built-in intent can map a spoken request and its extracted parameters to an app screen, deep link, or supported widget. The assistant parses the request and passes the parameters to that destination.

This model is deliberately bounded. The developer chooses which intents, parameters, and destinations exist; the assistant does not infer every possible operation from the app’s screens. Google also says action surfacing depends on quality and relevance and retains discretion over whether an action is shown to a user.
The documentation describes App Actions support for Android phones running Android 5/API level 21 or later, with Android Go excluded. That is a platform baseline, not a promise that every App Action works on every current handset or in every country.
AppFunctions provide structured functions to authorized callers
AppFunctions is Android’s newer, structured mechanism for exposing app-declared functions to agents and assistants. The Android documentation labels the API experimental and subject to change. It is available on Android 16 or higher, and a caller must hold EXECUTE_APP_FUNCTIONS to discover and execute the functions.
The permission is an important boundary: an arbitrary app cannot simply enumerate and run every function. Developers decide which operations to expose, and callers must be authorized. Gemini integration was described as a private preview with trusted testers as of May 2026, so ordinary users should not assume that an Android 16 phone automatically has access.

UI automation and Android Computer Control
What the preview does
Android Computer Control is a preview framework for OEM-preloaded assistant apps. After the assistant requests the privileged ACCESS_COMPUTER_CONTROL permission, the first interaction triggers a system permission dialog. If the user approves, the assistant can launch selected target apps in a secure background virtual display and work from their screen content. Supported operations include taps, swipes, and text input.
A session can include up to six target apps for sequential execution, and Android permits only one active session at a time. The assistant can hand control back to the user, including when a transaction needs human confirmation. This is supervised automation, not invisible remote control.
Rollout details are specific and dated
In an Android developer announcement dated February 25, 2026, Google described an early Gemini UI-automation preview for Galaxy S26 and selected Pixel 10 devices. The beta initially covered a curated set of food-delivery, grocery, and rideshare apps in the United States and South Korea. Gemini was designed to show progress and alert users before sensitive actions such as a purchase.
Those details describe that rollout, not a permanent compatibility list. A different phone, country, assistant build, account, or app may not be eligible. Even on an eligible device, an app outside the curated target set cannot be assumed to work.

Security boundaries: actions an assistant cannot take
Google documents several operations as protected. Gemini cannot change an app’s permission settings or grant itself camera, microphone, or location access. It cannot change the device PIN or password, factory-reset the phone, or read saved passwords. It also cannot modify accessibility settings to give itself or third-party software new system-automation privileges.
These restrictions matter because accessibility access and runtime permissions can provide broad control over a device. Treat any suggestion to bypass them by granting unrelated accessibility privileges as a security risk, not as a normal setup step.
Choose the right mechanism for your task
| If you want to… | Start with… | Why | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch an app or set a timer | Device assistance | Built-in Android action with the smallest scope | Device assistance connection and, for some actions, default-assistant status |
| Create an event or search supported media | Connected Apps | The app can perform a defined, consented operation | The exact app action and account connection |
| Expose one app workflow to voice search | App Actions | Developer-defined intent and destination | Supported Android version, app quality, relevance, and rollout |
| Offer structured functions to an AI agent | AppFunctions | Typed, permissioned app functionality | Android 16+, experimental status, and EXECUTE_APP_FUNCTIONS |
| Complete a multi-screen task in a supported app | Android Computer Control | Screen-level automation where the preview allows it | Eligible assistant, device, region, target app, system permission, and user confirmation points |
Troubleshoot a failed command
- Identify the requested level of control. If the request only opens an app, it is a launcher action. If it must create or search something inside the app, check for a Connected App or developer integration. If it requires tapping arbitrary controls, it may be outside current support.
- Check the assistant and phone combination. Confirm that you are using Gemini’s Android mobile app and that the feature is offered for your Android version, handset, account, and country. Preview features can disappear or change.
- Review Connected Apps. Make sure the relevant app and Device assistance are still connected. A revoked connection or signed-out account can look like an assistant failure.
- Review notification access. Notification reading and replies require that access. If it was denied or disabled, re-enable it through Android’s notification-access settings and retry.
- Check default-assistant status. When a quick device action says the Google app must be the default digital assistant, change that setting and run the command again.
- Look for an app-specific confirmation. Authentication, payment approval, or another sensitive step may require you to take over. UI automation is designed to pause for this rather than silently bypass it.
- Stop assuming broader support. If the app or function is not listed, there may be no permission you can add to make it work. The developer must expose an App Action, AppFunction, Connected App integration, or eligible Computer Control target.
Privacy and safety checklist
- Connect only the apps and accounts needed for the task.
- Understand that notification access can expose notification content to the assistant.
- Use confirmation and manual takeover for purchases, messages, bookings, and other consequential actions.
- Disconnect an integration when you no longer use it.
- Never grant unrelated accessibility access as a workaround for an unsupported command.
- Expect feature availability to vary by Android release, OEM, assistant, app, account, and country.
The practical answer
AI assistants can control parts of Android and selected app workflows, but only through explicit capabilities and permissions. Device assistance covers common phone actions; Connected Apps and App Actions expose specific app tasks; AppFunctions is an experimental structured interface for authorized callers; and Android Computer Control is a limited, supervised UI-automation preview. No current path establishes unrestricted control over every Android app, and Android’s permission and accessibility safeguards prevent an assistant from granting itself broader powers.
