Usually, no. If your laptop is running the streaming software and sending the video to YouTube, shutting it down stops that feed. The stream can continue only if a separate, powered device or cloud service keeps supplying and sending the video. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain that the encoder sends the feed and that stopping its outgoing content ends the stream. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
What determines whether the stream stays live?
There must be a source for the video and a device or service that encodes and sends it to YouTube. With an encoder setup, you enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder. If your laptop is that encoder—or is running the software that supplies the feed—turning it off interrupts the connection.
YouTube does not publish one universal grace period or reconnection guarantee for every stream setup. Do not count on a disconnected stream remaining live for a particular number of minutes or resuming automatically. The result depends on the streaming method and which device is actually sending the feed.
Check your streaming method
YouTube identifies mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming as broad options. The key question is not whether a YouTube dashboard or watch page remains open; it is whether a powered setup still has the video source, network connection, and stream connection needed to send the feed.

- Laptop encoder: If the laptop runs OBS or another encoder and sends the feed, shutting it down stops that setup from sending.
- Separate device or encoder: The stream may continue if that equipment, the video source, power, and internet connection all keep working independently of the laptop.
- Cloud service: A cloud-based service can send an uploaded video without relying on your laptop staying powered at home.
How to shut down the laptop without interrupting the feed
- Identify the sender. Check which device or service is running the streaming software and sending video to YouTube. A separate browser showing your live dashboard does not send the feed by itself.
- Move the feed to an independent setup. Before turning off the laptop, make sure another powered device or service has the video source and is configured to send the stream. For an encoder setup, this means the YouTube server URL and stream key must be entered in the encoder.
- Confirm the independent setup is sending. Verify that it is connected and supplying video before shutting down the laptop. If the laptop is still the source or sender, powering it off will interrupt the feed.
- End the stream deliberately when you want it to stop. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” For a scheduled stream, YouTube also instructs creators to click “End Stream” and stop sending encoder content. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Archiving is not the same as keeping the live feed running after the encoder stops.

Troubleshooting: if the stream stops or will not reconnect
- It ends when the laptop shuts down: The laptop was likely running the encoder or supplying the feed. Keep it on, or move the video source and sending role to a separate powered setup or cloud service.
- The dashboard is open, but viewers see no feed: A dashboard does not transmit video. Check the device or service that is supposed to send the feed and confirm it has power, network access, and the correct stream connection.
- A separate encoder does not keep streaming: Check that its video source, power, network, and YouTube connection are all independent of the laptop and still active. A hardware video encoder is useful only if the rest of that setup can continue too.
- The stream disconnects and does not resume: YouTube does not document one reconnect timeout or recovery guarantee for all setups. Check the sender’s connection and status, then follow the encoder or service’s reconnect steps; do not assume YouTube will resume it on its own.
- You want the stream to stop: Stop sending content from the encoder; for a scheduled stream, also use YouTube’s “End Stream” control as instructed.
Copyright and stream content
Changing the device that sends a stream does not change the rights to its content. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before broadcasting. A technically continuous feed is not permission to rebroadcast someone else’s material.
