Yes—but only if the laptop stays awake, connected to the internet, and able to run its streaming software with the lid shut. On a Windows laptop, check Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does and, if available, set the plugged-in action to Do nothing. Test the setup with a short private stream before relying on it. A closed laptop can still sleep or overheat, depending on its hardware and airflow.
What has to keep working when the lid is closed?
The livestream depends on the laptop continuing to run its streaming software and maintain its network connection. If closing the lid puts the computer to sleep, the stream will stop or lose its connection. Microsoft notes that most laptops can be configured to sleep when the lid closes, but available behavior and settings can vary by device and manufacturer (Microsoft Support: Battery saving tips for Windows).
A dark or dimmed display does not necessarily mean the laptop is asleep. Confirm what your particular machine does rather than inferring its state from the screen. Also check the laptop manufacturer’s guidance about operating it closed: airflow and thermal requirements differ by model, so a power setting alone cannot establish that extended closed-lid operation is safe.

- Identify the laptop model and check its manufacturer’s instructions for closed-lid use and ventilation.
- Plug in the laptop. Open Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does.
- Review the action for When I close the lid while plugged in. If the option is available, choose Do nothing and save the change.
- Start a short private livestream and close the lid. Check from another device that the stream remains live and that the connection stays stable.
- If the test fails, reopen the lid and check whether the laptop slept, the streaming software stopped, or the network connection dropped. Do not rely on the setup for a long broadcast until you have resolved the cause and tested again.
The instructions above are for Windows. The operating system and laptop model were not specified, so the exact setting or availability on other systems cannot be confirmed here.

Choose a YouTube streaming method
YouTube supports streaming from a computer by webcam or with encoder software. Choose the route that fits your setup; either way, the laptop must remain awake and connected for the stream to continue. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to livestream. Its current guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 for creators who livestream (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming).
Set the audience correctly for a children’s story
If the story livestream is directed to children, set its audience accurately as made for kids in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube says this designation disables live chat and features including comments and personalized ads on the stream. See YouTube Help: Set your channel or video’s audience.

A child-directed story is not the same issue as a child appearing in or participating in the livestream. YouTube’s guidance says creators must be at least 16 to livestream; under-16 participants on an adult-owned account need the adult to be visibly present. Check the current rules before a child participates (YouTube Help: Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming).
Common problems and what to check
- The stream stops as soon as the lid closes: the laptop may be sleeping. Recheck the plugged-in lid-close action and repeat a short private test.
- The screen goes dark and you are unsure whether the stream is running: a dark screen alone does not show whether the computer is asleep. Verify the stream from another device.
- The laptop stays on but the stream disconnects: check whether the internet connection or streaming software remains active; a lid setting does not guarantee a stable connection.
- The laptop becomes hot or behaves unexpectedly while closed: stop the test and consult the manufacturer’s closed-lid and airflow guidance for that model.
- You cannot start a stream: check channel verification and whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days.
