Yes. A YouTube channel streaming unlicensed cricket highlights 24/7 can have its live stream interrupted or removed and may receive a copyright strike. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including another live broadcast. Separately, Indian law gives broadcasting organisations rights in their broadcasts. A Content ID claim typically is not itself a strike, but a copyright removal request that YouTube accepts can lead to one.

Why a cricket highlights stream can create copyright risk

There are two separate issues: whether you have the rights to use the footage, and how YouTube handles matches or complaints about it. A stream can face platform enforcement even as the underlying legal question depends on the specific footage, rights holders, licence and use.

Indian law protects broadcasts

Section 37 of India’s Copyright Act, 1957 gives a broadcasting organisation a special broadcast reproduction right in its broadcasts. During the right’s term, the Act lists unlicensed rebroadcasting and making a broadcast, or a substantial part of it, available to the public among restricted acts. The Act defines broadcast to include rebroadcast and communication to the public to include making a work available through diffusion. The statutory term runs until 25 years from the beginning of the calendar year following the year in which the broadcast was made. Read section 37 in the Copyright Act and its Chapter I definitions.

A highlight may involve rights beyond the broadcaster’s rights, including footage, audio or other material controlled under separate arrangements. The relevant rights holder is not necessarily the broadcaster in every case. Whether a particular use is permitted depends on the material and the applicable licence or legal exception.

Looping highlights does not grant permission

Putting clips into a 24/7 loop does not itself create rights or establish that an exception applies. Nor does giving credit, using a short excerpt, editing a clip, adding commentary, or making the channel non-commercial automatically make the use lawful. Section 39 includes limited exceptions, such as fair dealing with excerpts for reporting current events, bona fide review, teaching or research, but the available statutory text does not establish that a continuous highlights channel qualifies. Check the Act’s Chapter VIII provisions and get advice on the actual use if the position is uncertain.

What YouTube may do to the live stream

YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. Depending on the platform process and rights-owner settings, detection can lead to a warning, a temporary replacement image, interruption or termination. YouTube also warns that restricting a stream to territories where you have rights may not prevent interruption if the channel has not been added to the content owner’s allowlist. Geoblocking is not a substitute for clearance. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Content ID claim versus copyright strike

A Content ID claim typically does not result in a copyright strike. A copyright removal request is different: it is a legal request, and if YouTube reviews it and considers it valid, YouTube removes the content and applies a strike. Do not treat a claim and a strike as interchangeable. YouTube explains copyright strikes; its guidance also covers copyright removal requests.

Consequences of a removal during a live stream

YouTube says that if an active live stream is removed for copyright, the channel receives a copyright strike and livestreaming access is restricted for seven days. Three active copyright strikes within 90 days can subject a channel to termination under YouTube’s stated rules. Check YouTube’s current strike guidance for the conditions and account-specific details.

Clear the rights before going live

Before streaming, confirm that the permission covers the exact content and the intended continuous YouTube use. A licence for one use, territory or period should not be assumed to cover another.

  1. Identify every component. List the match footage, commentary, music, graphics and any other protected material included in the clips.
  2. Identify the relevant rights holders. Check who controls each component and whether rights are held by a broadcaster, event organiser or another party.
  3. Check the licence scope. Confirm that permission covers the events and clips, India or other intended territories, YouTube, livestreaming and repeat or continuous retransmission, and the period you plan to stream.
  4. Keep written records. Retain the licence, any restrictions, the rights holder’s contact details and any platform allowlisting confirmation that applies to your channel.
  5. Do not rely on an assumed exception. If you believe a legal exception applies, assess the specific use with qualified advice before broadcasting; a platform’s decision and the legal merits are separate matters.

A Delhi High Court order in CS(COMM) 89/2026 records a claimant’s assertion of exclusive digital and television media rights in India for specified ICC events during 2024–2027, including live transmissions, highlights, clips and repeat transmissions. This is a specific, dated example of rights allocated by event, territory and period; it does not establish who owns every cricket highlight or competition’s rights. Read the order document. BCCI’s copyright notice concerns materials on its website and should not be taken by itself as proof of ownership of every match broadcast or highlight. See BCCI’s notice.

If your stream is interrupted or you receive a strike

Start with the notice in YouTube Studio

Check whether the notice is a Content ID claim, a live-stream interruption, or a copyright removal request and strike. Read the identified content, claimant and requested action carefully. A claim typically is not a strike; a removal request accepted by YouTube can be.

Choose a response only if it fits the facts

  • Permission exists: Contact the rights holder or claimant to resolve an identification or licensing issue and ask about retraction where appropriate.
  • The removal was mistaken or the content was misidentified: YouTube lists a counter-notification as an option. Use it only if you have an honest legal basis, such as a genuine basis for believing the removal was mistaken or misidentified. A counter-notification is a legal request shared with the claimant, not a routine appeal.
  • You do not have a basis to dispute the removal: YouTube also lists completing Copyright School and waiting 90 days as a route for a strike to expire under its guidance.

YouTube says a claimant has 10 US business days after a counter-notification to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content from being reinstated. Understand the legal consequences before submitting one. Read YouTube’s counter-notification guidance and its removal-request guidance. YouTube does not decide the ownership of rights under Indian law.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo can keep uploaded videos or a playlist running as a 24/7 YouTube stream; it does not clear copyright or make unlicensed cricket highlights permissible. You still need rights for every clip you stream. If you have cleared the content, the setup is:

  1. Upload your recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.

StreamNeo supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps as provided, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
