Yes, in principle. A temple trust in India can apply to earn from a 24/7 aarti livestream through the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), but the religious subject matter does not guarantee approval. The channel must meet YouTube’s eligibility conditions, pass a channel-wide review, and have the rights to everything it broadcasts. Tax treatment is a separate question for the trust’s advisers.
What must a temple channel qualify for?
India is on YouTube’s list of countries where creators can join YPP. As of the criteria checked in 2026, a channel can apply after reaching either of these thresholds:
- 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the preceding 12 months; or
- 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the preceding 90 days.
These figures are application thresholds, not approval or income guarantees. YouTube also requires the channel to meet program signup conditions, including having no active Community Guidelines strikes, two-step verification enabled, access to advanced features, and an AdSense for YouTube account. YouTube reviews the channel as a whole. See YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility and expanded YPP availability and eligibility.
A public livestream can contribute to the watch-hour threshold only when it remains public and is converted to a video on demand. Unlisted, deleted, or non-converted streams do not count under YouTube’s cited guidance. The trust should check the current eligibility page because YouTube can revise its requirements.
Does a continuous aarti stream meet monetization policies?
YouTube’s reviewed policies do not categorically bar a livestream because it shows a religious ceremony. The important questions are what the channel actually broadcasts, whether it controls the material, and whether the channel offers viewers meaningful original value. YouTube says its monetization policy is intended to ensure that “monetized content offers viewers something appealing and interesting to watch.”

Show a real ceremony, not a copied loop
A trust-controlled camera feed of an ongoing ceremony is materially different from rebroadcasting another person’s recording indefinitely. A continuous feed should accurately represent what is happening at the temple. If the stream is assembled from recordings or repeated segments, the trust should consider whether the channel is adding distinct creative, educational, or other value rather than publishing a templated feed with little variation.
On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content falls under its “inauthentic content” policy, explaining that this type of content was already ineligible under its existing rules. The review applies to the channel overall, not just one stream. Read YouTube channel monetization policies.
Clear the rights to everything viewers hear and see
Use a camera feed and audio that the trust is authorized to broadcast. Keep records of permissions for music, recordings, images, and other copyrighted material; a religious setting does not itself clear those rights. YouTube notes that ads can appear on material when a rights holder places them. Seeing ads on a stream does not prove the channel is in YPP or receiving a share of ad revenue.
What revenue can an eligible live stream earn?
For eligible, monetized channels, YouTube documents advertising and live fan-funding features such as Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships. With live monetization enabled, pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled; mid-roll ads can be automatic or manual. These are possible monetization routes, not guaranteed income sources. YouTube states: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
Balance mid-roll ads with the ceremony
Ads can interrupt the viewing experience. A trust that wants to protect the central portion of aarti can use YouTube’s controls to delay automatic mid-roll ads for important moments, or choose manual placement where available. Decide in advance which parts of the ceremony should remain uninterrupted, and explain to viewers that ad delivery is controlled by YouTube and is not fully predictable.
YouTube reported that creators who enabled automatic live mid-roll ads had more than 20% average uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not, across 207 countries in January 2024. That is YouTube’s aggregate comparison, not a forecast for a temple channel or a guarantee of higher earnings. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

How do Indian tax and donation rules affect the trust?
YPP approval does not decide the trust’s tax position. The Income Tax Department says Section 11 can exempt income derived from property held under trust wholly for charitable or religious purposes to the extent the income is applied to those purposes in India, subject to statutory conditions. The Department also says Section 12AB registration is mandatory to claim the Section 11 exemption. This is not a blanket ruling that all YouTube payments received by every temple trust are exempt; the trust’s registration, deed, income sources, accounts, and use of income matter. See Income Tax Department guidance on charitable and religious trusts.
Do not promise an 80G deduction without checking approval
A donation to a temple is not automatically deductible for the donor under Section 80G. Eligibility depends on the trust’s current approval and statutory conditions, including recordkeeping and rules concerning institutions expressed to benefit a particular religious community or caste. The law provides for certain specifically notified donations for temple renovation or repair, but that does not create a general deduction for all temple donations or contributions made through a livestream. Check the trust’s approval and the applicable provisions before making any claim to donors. See Income Tax Department guidance.

GST treatment is not settled by the donation circular
CBIC’s 2019 circular says that a donation acknowledgement expressing gratitude and public recognition, without advertising or promoting the donor’s business, is not a service supplied for consideration. Its statement, “Therefore, there is no GST liability on such consideration,” concerns that kind of donation acknowledgement; it should not be extended to YouTube advertising revenue. Separate GST material lists exemptions for conducting a religious ceremony and specified services connected with qualifying religious places, but the cited materials do not determine how this trust’s YouTube ad receipts should be classified, whether it must register, or which place-of-supply rules apply. The trust should obtain advice based on its state, turnover, contract, and accounting facts. Sources: CBIC Circular No. 116/35/2019-GST and CBIC GST exemptions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What setup does a 24/7 stream need?
YouTube supports livestreaming from a webcam, mobile device, or encoder. An encoder can be software or standalone hardware; it is useful when the trust needs external audio/video equipment or a more advanced production. It is not a YouTube monetization requirement. YouTube’s guide lists AJA HELO Plus as one hardware example and names software and services with continuous-stream capabilities, but no particular product, price, stock status, or suitability for this temple has been established. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the trust’s priority is keeping an uploaded aarti recording live around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option for YouTube. Upload the video, add the YouTube stream key, and go live; it loops the upload without requiring a computer, OBS, or a home internet connection to remain on. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, so it is not a substitute when viewers need to see the ceremony happening in real time.
- Nothing has to stay on at the temple or at home to keep an uploaded-video stream running.
- Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- It can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.
The same product is included on every plan; only the billing length changes. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India, with card checkout worldwide. The service is for YouTube only. Because it loops uploaded recordings rather than capturing a live ceremony, the trust remains responsible for originality, rights clearance, YPP review, and tax compliance.
