Yes—but “free” means no paid streaming software or hosting fee, not zero cost. A church can use YouTube Live with OBS Studio, which is free and open source, to loop prerecorded sermons. The church still needs a computer, electricity, a reliable internet connection, rights-cleared content and someone to manage interruptions. A single stream left running indefinitely is also a poor archive plan: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
What you need—and what “free” covers
The no-subscription setup is YouTube Live plus OBS Studio on a church-owned computer. OBS can send a prerecorded video or playlist as a live encoder feed. YouTube’s encoder workflow does not identify a per-stream charge, but operating the setup still uses power and internet data. If the church must buy a computer, connection or audio/video equipment, those costs are separate.
- Software: OBS Studio is free and open source (OBS Studio).
- Platform: YouTube supports live streams sent from encoders such as OBS (YouTube encoder setup).
- Local costs: electricity, internet service and any equipment the church does not already have. Actual ISP pricing and connection quality vary; there is no single India-wide cost figure to rely on.
- Content rights: the church needs permission for every audio and visual element it broadcasts, including music, backing tracks, lyrics, images and third-party clips.
YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started. If the church already has a suitable computer and internet connection, it can begin with those and improve the production later (YouTube live-streaming tips).
Set up a looping sermon stream with OBS
1. Check the channel’s live-stream eligibility
Verify the church’s YouTube channel and confirm it has no live-stream restrictions. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this check until the planned launch time. YouTube’s live-streaming tips specify no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days (YouTube live-streaming tips; YouTube encoder setup).

2. Prepare a rights-cleared video or playlist
Use a sermon recording, or make a simple visual to accompany sermon audio. In OBS, add a Media Source and enable looping for a single video; for a sequence, arrange the recordings as a playlist or scene workflow that the church can operate reliably. Test the complete sequence before going live. A sermon label does not grant permission to use worship songs, accompaniment, lyrics, photographs, illustrations or clips created by someone else.
3. Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream into OBS’s streaming settings. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send video to the church’s broadcast.
- Use RTMPS if the encoder workflow offers it and OBS is configured to use it; YouTube describes RTMPS as an encrypted transport option for supported encoders (YouTube encoder setup).
- Start sending from OBS, check the preview and stream-health indicators in Live Control Room, then start the YouTube broadcast when the feed is ready.
4. Set a stable output and test the church connection
Choose an output resolution and bitrate that the church’s upload connection can sustain consistently; a lower, stable setting is more useful than a high-quality feed that repeatedly drops. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth capacity spare beyond the stream’s bitrate. Test from the actual church connection and monitor stream health, because a speed test at another location or time cannot establish how reliable the live feed will be (YouTube live-streaming tips; YouTube network guidance).

5. Plan continuity and archives separately
A 24/7 schedule needs someone or a process to notice a failed feed and restart it. Split programming into segments shorter than 12 hours and deliberately start the next segment; YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving each sermon matters, keep a local recording rather than relying on the live replay as the only copy (YouTube live-stream archive guidance).
Copyright and YouTube rules can interrupt a free stream
YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content. If it detects content that may be protected, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even when a church has a licence, the rights holder may need to allowlist the channel in Content ID; otherwise a licensed song can still be flagged during the broadcast. Check permissions and any required channel allowlisting before including worship music or other third-party material (YouTube copyright guidance; YouTube Terms of Service).

Where the free OBS setup can fail
