Yes, a Samsung Galaxy Watch can make and answer calls. Whether it needs your phone nearby depends on the model. A Bluetooth model places and receives calls through the paired phone. An LTE model with active carrier service can call without the phone connected. Some supported models also offer a Wi-Fi remote-calling option, but it comes with carrier, setup, and incoming-call limits.
Bluetooth models: calls run through your phone
Samsung states that a Bluetooth Galaxy Watch must be connected to its phone to make calls. On Samsung’s setup guidance for the Galaxy Watch7 and Watch Ultra, the wording is direct: “Unless the watch is an LTE model with active network services, calling and messaging functions are only available when connected to a Galaxy phone using Bluetooth.” In practice, the watch is a remote control for the phone’s call. If the phone is out of Bluetooth range or disconnected, a Bluetooth watch cannot place or take a call on its own.
LTE models: standalone calling after activation
An LTE variant has its own cellular connection, so it can call without the phone. Samsung’s U.S. support guidance says: “If you have an LTE model, you can make calls directly from the watch without being connected to your phone.”
Two conditions have to be met. First, the watch must be an LTE model, not a Bluetooth model. Second, the watch must have active service on an eligible carrier plan. Buying a watch labeled LTE does not by itself give you calling. Samsung describes activation as a setup step in the Galaxy Wearable app, and its U.S. guidance points to the following paths:
#1 Best Overall
- Next-Generation 3nm Processor: Exynos W1000 chipset delivers significantly faster performance and smoother app navigation.
- Open the Galaxy Wearable app on the paired phone.
- Go to Watch settings, or to Home and then Mobile plans, depending on the app version.
- Follow the carrier prompts to activate the plan and confirm the watch’s line is live.
Samsung’s U.S. examples of carriers are AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Those are examples of U.S. carriers, not a list of carriers available everywhere. Eligibility depends on your country, your carrier, and the specific watch model. Samsung Hong Kong’s instructions, last updated March 26, 2026, say the LTE version can receive calls and messages without a phone once carrier service is activated. That page applies to Hong Kong products only.
How to make a call from the watch
Samsung’s documented flow for placing a call is the same on both Bluetooth and LTE models:
Rank #2
- Includes charging cord
- Unlocked for all major carriers
- Open the Phone app on the watch.
- To dial a number, tap the keypad and enter it. To call someone saved in your contacts, tap Contacts and select the person.
- Tap the green phone icon to start the call.
On a Bluetooth watch, the call travels through the connected phone. On an LTE watch with active service, the call can proceed without the phone connected. Samsung also documents moving an active call back to the phone if you need to switch.

Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the watch is connected to the phone over Bluetooth.
- On the phone, open the Bluetooth settings and find the paired watch.
- Make sure the Calls toggle for that watch is turned on.
Menu labels can differ by device, carrier, and software version, so the exact wording on your phone may not match these names.

Wi-Fi remote calling: a conditional option
Certain supported models, including some older Galaxy Watch and Wear OS models, can place calls remotely over Wi-Fi. Samsung’s instructions require you to enable Call and text on other devices while the watch is first paired. The feature is designed for use after the Bluetooth connection to the phone drops, so it is not a general replacement for an LTE model.
Samsung’s U.S. guidance includes warnings you should read before relying on it:

- Incoming calls may not arrive on the watch.
- Certain combinations are excluded. Samsung’s U.S. page names some Verizon and AT&T phones, and LTE watches with active service, among the exclusions.
Because these conditions can change, check Samsung Support for your exact watch, phone, and carrier before you depend on this feature.

| Remote Wi-Fi | Over Wi-Fi after the Bluetooth connection drops | No, but the feature depends on the setup | A supported watch and phone, with Call and text enabled during initial pairing | Incoming calls may not arrive; U.S. exclusions apply, per Samsung’s current U.S. guidance |
Choosing the right setup for your situation
Three questions will settle most decisions:
- Do you need calls when your phone is not with you? If yes, you need an LTE model with active service. A Bluetooth model will not do this.
- Is your carrier and plan eligible in your country? Check Samsung and your carrier for your exact model number and plan, rather than relying on a general compatibility list.
- Do you need to be sure every call arrives? If so, treat Wi-Fi remote calling as a secondary option, not your primary line.
Samsung’s guidance also notes that call audio routed to Bluetooth headphones is available only on LTE watch models. If you plan to use headphones for calls, verify your model’s support before you buy.

Where support varies
Samsung’s regional support pages state that models, setup steps, and plans vary by location and by where the product was purchased. The U.S. pages and the Hong Kong instructions show the same product family working differently by market. Before you recommend or buy a watch for standalone calling, confirm the exact model, the country, and the carrier that will be used.
