No—not at 10Gbps line rate. Raspberry Pi 5’s built-in Ethernet port is Gigabit Ethernet, and its documented USB and PCIe interfaces do not provide a supported 10Gbps path. You can investigate faster-than-gigabit adapters, especially 2.5GbE over USB, but that is different from achieving 10Gbps.
What Pi 5’s network connections support
| Connection | Documented Pi 5 specification | What it means for 10GbE |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in Ethernet | Gigabit Ethernet | The onboard port is not 10GbE. It provides the straightforward wired-network baseline. |
| USB Ethernet adapter | Two USB 3.0 ports support simultaneous 5Gbps operation; Raspberry Pi documentation recognizes USB-to-Ethernet adapters for adding wired connectivity. | USB 3.0’s specified rate is below 10Gbps. A faster-than-gigabit adapter may be worth investigating, but its driver support and actual throughput depend on the specific adapter and setup. |
| PCIe Ethernet card or HAT | PCIe Gen 2.0 x1. Raspberry Pi’s official magazine describes one PCIe 2.0 lane as 5Gbit/s before coding overhead, or 4Gbit/s capacity after overhead. | The documented host link is below 10Gbps, so a PCIe Ethernet device cannot use it to deliver 10Gbps line rate. |
| PCIe Gen 3 configuration | Can be enabled manually, but Pi 5 is not certified for Gen 3.0; Raspberry Pi warns connections may be unstable. | This is experimental, not a supported or guaranteed way to claim 10GbE performance. |
| Wi-Fi | Dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi | It is not a wired 10Gbps alternative. |
These are interface specifications, not measured end-to-end transfer speeds. Raspberry Pi has not established a benchmark for a named 10GbE adapter on Pi 5, so a theoretical link rate should not be presented as application throughput.
Can you get faster than the built-in gigabit port?
Possibly. A USB 2.5GbE adapter is a reasonable category to investigate if your goal is to exceed the built-in Gigabit Ethernet connection. Raspberry Pi’s documentation says USB-to-Ethernet adapters can add wired connectivity, and Pi 5’s USB 3.0 ports are specified for 5Gbps operation. Neither fact guarantees that a particular adapter will work or achieve a particular speed.
Before buying, check the adapter’s Linux driver support and compatibility with Raspberry Pi 5, along with connector and power requirements. Prefer a seller with a return policy in case the adapter does not work with your software or network. No specific 2.5GbE adapter model or measured result is established here.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Would a PCIe adapter solve the 10GbE limit?
No. Pi 5 exposes PCIe Gen 2.0 x1. Raspberry Pi’s official magazine gives the capacity of a single PCIe 2.0 lane as 4Gbit/s after coding overhead, which is below the 10Gbps Ethernet line rate. A PCIe FPC adapter or HAT can connect a peripheral, but it does not change the bandwidth of the Pi’s documented host link.
Although Gen 3 can be enabled manually, Raspberry Pi says Pi 5 is not certified for that mode and that Gen 3 connections may be unstable. Treat it as experimental; it is not evidence of a supported, reliable 10Gbps setup.

Choose based on the speed you actually need
- For ordinary wired networking: use the built-in Gigabit Ethernet port.
- To explore speeds above gigabit: investigate a USB 2.5GbE adapter, checking its drivers and compatibility before purchase.
- For a true 10GbE link: Pi 5’s documented interfaces do not provide a supported 10Gbps host path. Choose hardware with a suitable 10GbE-capable interface instead.
