Yes. Next.js does not require an application database. You can serve fixed content, fetch data while building the site, or retrieve data at runtime from an external API. Use a database when your app needs to own and query persistent records that change over time.

Whether you use a database and how you deploy Next.js are separate decisions: an app without a database can still run on a Node.js server. Static export is another option, but it removes the runtime Next.js server and limits which features you can use.

What does “without a database” mean?

It means your application does not connect to and manage its own database for the data in question. The data might instead be fixed in the app, obtained from an external service, or retrieved from another system that owns it. A database is an architectural choice, not a Next.js prerequisite.

Next.js Server Components can retrieve data using either fetch or an ORM/database. Its data-fetching guide describes both approaches. In the Pages Router, static generation can also render pages without external data or pre-render them using external data at build time, as outlined in the static-generation guide.

Which data pattern fits your app?

Pattern Where the data comes from Runtime and freshness implications Typical fit
Fixed content Content included in the app; no external data is needed for the page. Pages can be generated ahead of requests. Static export is possible if the app uses only supported features. Informational pages with content that changes rarely.
Build-time fetch An external endpoint or content service queried while pages are generated. Generated content is available ahead of requests. Updates depend on rebuilding or on configured regeneration behavior. Content that changes infrequently and can be refreshed through the build or regeneration setup.
Runtime external API fetch An external API or service that owns the records. Server-side fetching requires a runtime-capable deployment. Rendering may wait for the request, and the app depends on that service’s availability and response time. Data managed outside the app that needs to be read at runtime.
Database access A database accessed from server-side code, often through an ORM or database client. The server needs a reachable database; reads and writes can use records the app owns. User-created content, account state, or other persistent records that change over time.

These are architecture patterns, not performance rankings. The right choice depends on who owns the data, how often it changes, and whether the app must write and query its own records.

When does an app actually need a database?

Choose a database when the product needs durable records that the application creates or updates and later queries. Examples include user-created content and account state. That need comes from the product’s persistence requirements, not from Next.js itself.

If another service already owns the data, an API or content service may be enough. Check that it supports the operations, access controls, and freshness your app requires; “no app-owned database” does not mean that the data has no persistent storage anywhere.

Does avoiding a database mean static hosting?

No. Data storage and deployment are independent decisions. The official deployment guide lists a Node.js server, Docker, static export, and platform adapters. It says Node.js deployments support all Next.js features, while static export has limited feature support.

Run on a Node.js server

A Node.js deployment can support runtime server-side work, including calls to external APIs. The Next.js deployment guidance says a platform needs a Node.js server to run Next.js; platform-specific support can still vary. See Deploying Next.js to different platforms.

Export a static site

Static export produces files that can be served by a static web server, with no runtime Next.js server. Features that require the Next.js runtime are therefore unavailable in this mode. Review the backend-for-frontend guide and deployment documentation before choosing export, especially if your app needs server-side requests after deployment.

What should you consider when fetching external data?

  • Build-time versus runtime: Build-time fetching puts generated content into the output ahead of requests; runtime fetching makes the deployed app depend on a live service when it handles requests.
  • Rendering behavior: The current Next.js fetching guide says Server Component fetches are not cached by default and may block rendering until they complete. Caching and streaming choices affect that behavior.
  • Where requests originate: For Server Components, Next.js recommends fetching directly from the data source when possible rather than routing each request through a Route Handler by default.
  • Service dependency: A runtime API call makes the external service’s availability and response time part of the app’s behavior. The sources here do not establish comparative performance or guarantees for particular services.

How do you protect credentials?

Keep database credentials and private API credentials in server-only environment variables. Next.js makes environment variables available to server code by default, but a variable prefixed with NEXT_PUBLIC_ is inlined into browser JavaScript at build time. Treat those values as public, not secret. The environment variables guide explains the distinction.

Keeping query logic and credentials out of the client bundle does not by itself protect data. Server-side data access still needs appropriate authentication and authorization.

A practical way to choose

  1. List the records your app needs. Identify whether they are fixed, supplied by another service, or created and changed by users of your app.
  2. Choose who owns each record. If another system is the source of truth, determine whether its API or content service can meet your app’s needs. If the app must own and query changing records, plan for persistent storage such as a database.
  3. Choose when data should be read. Use build-time fetching when content can be generated ahead of requests and refreshed through rebuilding or configured regeneration. Use runtime fetching when the app needs to read from a service during a request.
  4. Choose a compatible deployment. Static export is suitable only when the app can work without Next.js runtime features. For runtime server-side work, use a runtime-capable deployment such as Node.js.
  5. Keep secrets on the server. Do not use NEXT_PUBLIC_ for credentials, and enforce authorization in server-side data access.
