Yes—if the NAS can run a compatible encoder continuously and has enough processing capacity and upload bandwidth. The NAS must do more than store video: an encoder has to loop or sequence authorized recordings and send the feed to YouTube using a stream URL and key. Whether a particular NAS can do that depends on its model, operating system, available software and encoding performance.
How the setup works
YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a format suitable for streaming. A NAS-hosted encoder can read files from NAS storage and send a live feed to YouTube, but a shared folder alone is not a broadcast.
- Store the video files on the NAS. Use recordings and audio you have the rights to stream.
- Confirm the NAS can run the encoder. Check the exact model, operating-system version, container or runtime support, codec compatibility and available CPU or hardware-encoding capacity.
- Configure playback and output. Set the encoder to loop one video or sequence a playlist, then choose a YouTube-compatible output format and bitrate. Verify the chosen encoder’s looping and restart behavior; they are not guaranteed just because the NAS supports containers.
- Create or schedule a YouTube live event. In YouTube’s encoder workflow, obtain the stream URL and key and enter them in the encoder. Treat the key like a password.
- Preview and monitor the feed. Check YouTube’s preview, audio and video quality, upload stability, and the encoder process before relying on an unattended stream.
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe this workflow; Synology’s Container Manager documentation illustrates why NAS capability must be checked by model. Its package listing is for DSM 7.4 and names supported devices, so container support on one Synology unit should not be generalized to every NAS or treated as proof of sufficient encoding performance. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and Synology Container Manager’s package information.

Channel eligibility and event setup
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Set up the event and encoder in advance rather than assuming a newly enabled channel can go live immediately. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event.

It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Ingest protocol, codec and bitrate
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure form of RTMP. Its encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 in supported configurations; the NAS, encoder, codec and selected resolution must all be compatible. For H.264 at 720p and 30 frames per second, YouTube recommends 4 Mbps. That figure is specific to that resolution and frame rate, not a universal bitrate for every stream.
YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. A 4 Mbps video stream therefore needs more than 4 Mbps of reliable upload capacity, before accounting for other network use. Plan against sustained real-world capacity, not the connection’s advertised or theoretical maximum. See YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s network guidance.

Duration and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single 24-hour event will be saved as one archive. If preserving an archive matters, plan for the duration limit and verify the resulting recordings in YouTube Studio.

What changes for a children’s livestream?
If the content is designated “made for kids,” YouTube disables live chat, chat replay, comments on live archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled, although contextual ads may still appear. Those restrictions can materially change engagement and monetization expectations.

An encoder working correctly does not establish that a particular looped or repetitive children’s program meets YouTube’s rights, originality, content or monetization policies. Confirm that you have rights to both video and audio, select the audience setting accurately, and review YouTube’s applicable policies for the actual content and intended use. Do not treat continuous playback as a guarantee of monetization or policy compliance. See YouTube’s guidance on content made for kids.
Choose where the encoder should run
| Approach | Main advantage | Main tradeoff | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| NAS-hosted encoder | Uses existing storage and hardware, with direct control over the process. | Compatibility, encoding load, home power and network reliability, and ongoing maintenance. | Exact model and runtime support, codecs, CPU headroom, upload bandwidth, and restart and alert behavior. |
| Separate streaming computer or hardware encoder | Moves encoding work off the NAS and can make the streaming system more dedicated. | Adds a device and another setup to maintain. | YouTube-compatible ingest, supported codec and resolution, and ability to run continuously. |
| Cloud 24/7 service | The home NAS does not have to send the stream continuously. | Depends on a third-party service and its current terms and availability. | Current service terms, pricing, account eligibility and rights workflow. |
YouTube’s encoder help page lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded streams. That listing establishes it as an option category, not its current pricing, reliability or endorsement. StreamNeo is another YouTube-only cloud option: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so a home computer or NAS does not need to stay on. It comes first as the alternative to consider for this use because one slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and the first day is free.

Make a NAS stream more reliable
- Test before launch: Run a test event, check YouTube’s preview, and listen and watch for audio or video problems.
- Monitor the whole path: Watch encoder status, NAS resource use, upload stability and YouTube stream health. Platform guidance recommends previewing and continuously monitoring audio and video; it does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
- Plan for restarts and outages: Decide how the encoder will recover from a process crash, NAS reboot or update, power loss, router failure, ISP outage or YouTube-side interruption. Test the recovery behavior rather than assuming it.
- Protect the stream key: Store it as a secret, restrict access and replace it if it is exposed.
- Consider a UPS: A suitably sized UPS may keep the NAS and network equipment powered through a short interruption, but cannot prevent an ISP outage or YouTube interruption.
There is no guarantee of uninterrupted service from a particular NAS configuration here: no specific NAS was tested for continuous encoding or uptime.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, it supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
