Yes, Immich on a mini PC can provide a self-hosted photo library and a way to back up new phone photos. But the available documentation does not establish that uploads are instant, that Immich replaces every Google One feature, or that a particular mini PC will perform well. The practical decision is whether you can meet Immich’s hardware and storage needs—and take responsibility for keeping both your media and its database safe.
What Immich can—and cannot—replace
Immich is a self-hosted photo and video library. The project’s Quick Start points to Google Takeout and immich-go as options for importing an existing Google Photos archive, and its mobile app can upload selected phone albums to your server. That supports a move of your library and ongoing phone backups; it does not establish that Immich duplicates every feature or service included with Google One.
There is also no basis here for calling uploads “finally instant” as a general result. Immich says mobile backup runs when the app opens or resumes and periodically in the background. The default is Wi-Fi-only, and Android battery optimization can interfere with background work. An upload that starts after opening the app is different from a guaranteed immediate background upload.

Immich’s published requirements are starting points, not independent performance benchmarks. The project recommends a 64-bit Linux or Unix-like operating system and lists these hardware figures:

These figures come from Immich’s Requirements documentation. They do not specify a particular mini PC model or guarantee a given upload, browsing, or processing speed.
Plan storage beyond the original files
Immich estimates that thumbnails and transcoded video add 10–20% to storage on average. Its PostgreSQL database is typically 1–3 GB, and the project recommends storing that database on a local SSD rather than a network share. Account for the media library, this additional storage, and room to grow when choosing the machine’s drives.

Importing an existing Google Photos library
Immich’s Quick Start identifies Google Takeout and immich-go as a route for importing an existing Google Photos archive. It also cautions that large uploads can take a while. The documentation cited here does not establish a universal import duration or guarantee that every archive’s metadata will transfer exactly as expected.
Before treating the import as complete, check the library in Immich and retain the original archive until you have verified the files you care about. This is a prudent migration safeguard, not a claim that the import is known to lose data.

Set up phone backup with realistic expectations
Immich mobile backup covers selected albums and works when the app opens or resumes, as well as periodically in the background. The default Wi-Fi-only behavior can affect when uploads begin. On Android, battery optimization may limit background work; check the phone’s battery settings if uploads seem delayed. The Mobile Backup documentation describes this behavior, not a guaranteed upload latency.

Self-hosting makes you responsible for protecting the library. Immich’s Backup and Restore documentation recommends a 3-2-1 backup strategy. Keep copies of both the uploaded media and the database: the database stores paths and metadata, but it does not scan the media folder. A database-only backup is therefore not a copy of your photos and videos.

A separate external drive can provide one local copy, but by itself it does not make a complete 3-2-1 arrangement. Plan additional copies and an off-site location, and make sure the backup process covers both the media files and the database. Immich’s Quick Start also notes that manual media backups are needed in addition to automatic database backups.

Who should make the switch?
- Immich may fit if you want a self-hosted photo library, have a suitable always-available machine and storage, and are willing to manage updates, availability, and backups.
- Pause before switching if you need uploads to start immediately without opening or resuming the app, do not have a reliable backup plan, or expect a mini PC alone to protect your only copy of the library.
Self-hosting changes who operates and safeguards the service: you do. The official setup requirements and backup guidance make hardware, storage, and ongoing protection part of the decision—not optional extras.
