Yes—but only in the limited laboratory sense demonstrated by a 2016 study: researchers observed neon adsorbed inside two porous metal–organic frameworks and reported an interaction with exposed nickel atoms in one of them. The result was a structural observation under low-temperature, high-pressure conditions, not a working industrial neon-separation process.
What the study showed
In their 2016 paper, Peter A. Wood and co-authors reported what they described as the first crystallographic observation of neon in an organic or metal–organic environment, and the first crystallographic observation of a neon–transition-metal interaction. Their paper, “Capturing neon – the first experimental structure of neon trapped within a metal–organic environment”, appeared in Chemical Communications on 21 August 2016.
Crystallography let the team determine where neon atoms were located within the frameworks. That establishes that neon could be held in those materials under the experiment’s conditions; it does not show that a framework can efficiently extract neon from air or produce it at useful scale.
Which frameworks were tested?
The researchers examined two porous materials and reported different interactions:

| Framework | Metal in the framework | Reported neon interaction |
|---|---|---|
| NiMOF-74 | Nickel | Neon interacted with exposed nickel sites; the framework underwent a physical change upon depressurization. |
| PCN-200 | Copper | Neon showed van der Waals interactions. |
The distinction matters: the result for NiMOF-74 was evidence of neon interacting with exposed transition-metal sites, while PCN-200 provided a comparison in which the reported interaction was van der Waals in character. Neither observation alone establishes how selectively either material would capture neon from a mixture of gases.
Why the experiment needed unusual conditions
Neon is light and chemically inert, making its position difficult to identify. The reported adsorption experiments used pressures from 5 to 100 bar, along with low temperatures. The Advanced Photon Source account describes the use of in-situ X-ray powder diffraction under low-temperature, high-pressure conditions to establish neon positions. A 2019 infographic from the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre gives −173 °C for the nickel-framework experiment.

These figures describe experimental conditions, not capture performance. The study did not establish a neon capacity, a selectivity factor, an industrial yield, or a cost reduction.
Could this lead to practical neon capture?
It is a possible research direction, not a demonstrated application. The Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre identified improving framework selectivity for neon over other atmospheric gases as a next step. A material would need to distinguish neon from the gases around it and capture it usefully under workable operating conditions before it could be considered a practical separation technology.

The 2016 finding therefore answers a narrower question than whether a device can harvest neon from air: it showed that neon can be located within metal–organic frameworks and that its interaction with one nickel framework differs from that in a copper framework. The available sources do not establish commercial deployment or industrial readiness.
