Yes—but a local AI model needs a connected search or browsing tool to reach the live web. “Local” usually describes where the model runs, not where every part of the assistant runs. A local model can use online search when it has a configured provider and network access; offline, it can answer from its model and prepared local files, but it cannot retrieve current web pages.
What “local AI” means when it searches the web
A model running on your computer generates answers from its downloaded model weights and the context it receives. It does not automatically have live internet access. For a current answer, the surrounding app must call a search service, retrieve results or pages, and pass that material to the model.
That separation matters: the model’s inference can be local while the search request goes to an online provider. For example, Ollama documents web-search and page-fetch tools that a model can call; using its web-search API requires an account API key. Ollama’s web-search documentation describes the feature as a way to augment models with current web information.

Web search typically returns results for a query. Browsing can go further by opening pages and, depending on the tool, interacting with a browser. An assistant that can search is not necessarily able to navigate websites like a person.

Open WebUI documents web search providers separately from its browser feature. Its listed search options include DuckDuckGo, providers that require API keys, and SearXNG, which requires the base URL of an instance. Its browser feature is off by default and can use a local browser controlled through Chrome DevTools Protocol or cloud browser services. Check the provider and browser configuration in your own installation, since each choice affects which service receives requests and whether connectivity is required. Open WebUI documentation
What works online and offline
| Setup | What it can do | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Local model with online search | Generate responses locally and incorporate live search results or fetched pages. | A configured search or fetch service and working network access; some providers require an account key or a reachable SearXNG instance. |
| Prepared local model with no internet | Answer from its learned weights and, when the local document workflow is ready, process local files. | Model files and any needed runtimes, embeddings, document-extraction dependencies, and other services must already be available locally. |
| Local interface with external services still configured | Run an interface locally, but still make requests to external APIs or hosted search if configured and network access permits. | Application settings alone do not enforce network isolation; outbound traffic must be controlled separately. |
LM Studio says downloaded models can run offline, local document chat stays on the machine, and its local inference server does not require internet access. Its offline documentation also notes that model discovery, model and runtime downloads, and update checks need network access. LM Studio: Offline Operation

Prepare for offline use before disconnecting
Downloading a model is not necessarily enough for every offline workflow. Open WebUI’s community-contributed offline guide calls out local inference, document embeddings and extraction, and required dependencies as preparation areas. Make sure each component your workflow uses is installed and available before taking the machine offline. Open WebUI: Run Open WebUI Offline
- Set up the model while online. Download the model files and any runtime or supporting components your chosen application needs.
- Prepare the document workflow. If you plan to chat with local files, check that embedding and extraction components and their dependencies are available locally.
- Test without connectivity. Disconnect the target machine and verify model chat and document chat separately. A workflow that works online may still rely on an external service.
- Restore network access for online-only tasks. Search-provider access, model discovery, downloads, and update checks may require a connection.
What an offline setting does—and does not—guarantee
An application’s offline mode is not the same as a network-layer block. Open WebUI’s offline guide explicitly says its settings do not prevent outbound connections. If an external API or hosted search provider is configured, it may still receive requests whenever the machine has network access.

For strict isolation, use firewall, container, or physical network controls rather than relying only on an application setting. Test the actual deployment on the machine and network where it will run; a local interface by itself does not prove that no external traffic is occurring.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a setup by the capability you need
- Need current web results? Use a local model with a configured, reachable search provider. Confirm whether it needs an account key, an instance URL, or no additional configuration.
- Need page navigation or interaction? Check for a distinct browser feature, and determine whether it uses a local browser or a cloud service.
- Need work without internet? Prepare model files and all local document-processing components in advance. Plan to work from model knowledge and local materials, not live web pages.
- Need network isolation? Restrict outbound traffic at the network layer and test the result; an offline flag alone is insufficient.
There is no universal hardware threshold or quality, speed, or privacy winner established for these configurations. Requirements depend on the particular model and workflow, and comparisons need defined conditions and testing.
