No—not as a standalone speaker, according to Amazon’s published documentation. A Fire TV Stick is a streaming device, not the speaker that produces sound. Amazon documents a different setup: route audio from a compatible Fire TV to one or more compatible Echo speakers using Alexa Home Theater. Amazon’s setup directions also rely on the Fire TV interface and say to follow directions on the TV, so they do not establish a way to set it up initially without a TV.
What a Fire TV Stick can—and cannot—do
Amazon describes compatible Echo devices as the speakers that play audio from a Fire TV after you create an Alexa Home Theater group. The Stick supplies the Fire TV audio; the Echo produces the sound. Amazon’s Fire TV-to-Echo instructions do not describe the Stick itself as a standalone smart speaker.
There is a separate feature that can make a Fire TV remote useful for voice commands. Amazon says to hold the Alexa Voice button on the remote and ask for actions such as opening an app, finding a title, or playing music. That remote-based control is not the same as an always-listening smart speaker. Amazon notes that hands-free Alexa is available on some different Fire TV devices, but that device-specific feature does not establish that a standard Fire TV Stick becomes a speaker. Amazon’s Alexa with Fire TV guide explains the distinction.

- A Fire TV device that supports Alexa Home Theater in your configuration.
- One or more Echo speakers that Amazon lists as compatible with that Fire TV model. The exact combinations vary by generation; check Amazon’s current compatibility guide before buying an Echo or relying on an older Stick.
- A TV available for the documented setup flow. Amazon’s instructions include navigating the Fire TV menus, and the Alexa-app procedure tells you to follow directions on the TV.
This creates a route for Fire TV audio to play through Echo. It does not turn the Stick into an independent Alexa music speaker, and the cited Amazon documentation does not show a TV-free initial setup or a workaround for one.

Set up Alexa Home Theater as Amazon documents it
Amazon lists both an Alexa app method and a Fire TV menu method. The available options and limits can vary by device, so use the current instructions for your particular setup rather than assuming every Stick and Echo combination follows the same flow.
Use the Alexa app
- Open the Alexa app and select Devices.
- Select the plus icon, then choose Combine speakers and Home Theater.
- Choose the compatible Fire TV, then select compatible Echo speakers. The documented flow allows up to two speakers and optionally an Echo Sub.
- If you choose two Echo speakers, assign the left and right channels. Name the theater, assign it to a room, and follow the directions shown on the TV.
See Amazon’s Home Theater group instructions for the current app flow and configuration details.

Use the Fire TV menu
On a compatible device, Amazon gives this route: Settings > Display & Sounds > Alexa Home Theater > Create Alexa Home Theater. Follow the on-screen instructions to select and configure compatible Echo speakers. For setup requirements and device-specific instructions, see Amazon’s Fire TV setup guide.
Check your exact Stick generation before relying on it
Compatibility is generation-specific, not a blanket feature of Fire TV Sticks. Amazon’s current guide lists Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Generation), Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Generation), and Fire TV Stick 4K Select among devices that do not currently support Alexa Home Theater. It lists other configurations—including Fire TV Stick 4K (1st Generation), Fire TV Stick Lite, Fire TV Stick HD (1st Generation), and Fire TV Stick (3rd Generation)—for Fire TV audio, subject to particular Echo-generation pairings.
