Yes, sometimes—but a DigitalOcean Basic Droplet is not a guaranteed 24/7 streaming host. It may be suitable when it only relays already-encoded video and a full-duration test confirms stable performance. If it must encode video in real time, or variable CPU access is unacceptable, consider a dedicated CPU Droplet. Either way, budget for YouTube’s bitrate, outbound data transfer, and a plan to recover from interruptions.

When a Basic Droplet can work

DigitalOcean Basic Droplets use shared CPU. The provider says a shared-CPU Droplet may have access to a full hyperthread, but that access is not guaranteed and can depend on neighboring Droplets’ load. Basic is intended for low-to-medium-load applications with occasional brief bursts, not as a published guarantee of continuous streaming performance. DigitalOcean’s plan guidance, last verified September 3, 2026, lists the Basic family as spanning 1–8 vCPUs and 1–32 GB of memory; that family range does not mean every size can encode video.

Relaying versus encoding

A relay sends an already-encoded video feed to YouTube; real-time encoding uses CPU to turn source video into the outgoing stream. The relay workload may be modest, while encoding can be CPU-intensive. DigitalOcean identifies live streaming and video encoding as use cases for CPU-Optimized Droplets, which provide dedicated CPU access. That is a reason to consider dedicated CPU for encode-heavy work, not proof that every relay needs it. The provider does not publish a benchmark comparing a specific Basic size with a specific CPU-Optimized size for a particular YouTube stream.

Use this decision rule

  • Basic may be reasonable: the video is already encoded, the Droplet has sufficient memory and included outbound transfer, and a representative test shows stable CPU, memory, network, and YouTube stream health.
  • Consider dedicated CPU: the Droplet encodes in real time, CPU use stays high, dropped frames or stream-health problems persist under representative conditions, or the stream cannot tolerate variable CPU access.

Estimate bitrate and outbound data

YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are encoder recommendations, not guarantees that a particular Droplet can sustain a stream. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the resolution, frame rate, codec, and protocol you intend to use.

What continuous streaming adds up to

At a steady 5 Mbps for 24 hours, the stream sends approximately 54 GB before protocol overhead. This is an arithmetic estimate based on bitrate multiplied by time, not a published DigitalOcean or YouTube usage figure; actual transfer can vary with stream behavior and overhead. A stream running every day can consume substantial monthly outbound transfer, so calculate for the planned hours and bitrate, then check the included transfer and pricing for the exact Droplet size before launching.

Allow network headroom

YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom above the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. Its streaming tips advise leaving room for the combined stream bitrate. For a single 5 Mbps stream, that means planning for more than 5 Mbps of steady available upload capacity; if you send a backup stream, include its bitrate too.

DigitalOcean documents a maximum network throughput of 2 Gbps for non-Premium, non-GPU Droplets in its Droplet limits. That is a ceiling, not a promise of stable application-level throughput, stream availability, or a particular monthly transfer allowance. Included outbound transfer varies by Droplet size and type; do not treat the network ceiling as your monthly data allowance.

Prepare YouTube and the stream before going live

A capable server alone does not satisfy YouTube’s channel requirements. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must have had no live-stream restrictions during the preceding 90 days. Confirm eligibility in the channel and Live Control Room before configuring the server; details are in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

  1. Choose the workload. Decide whether the Droplet will relay an already-encoded feed or encode the video in real time. The second case is more CPU-intensive and may call for dedicated CPU.
  2. Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings. Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate for the actual source and target stream. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30 or 6 Mbps at 1080p60. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; see its encoder settings guidance.
  3. Check transfer and capacity. Estimate outbound data from bitrate and streaming hours, add YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom above combined primary and backup bitrate, and verify the exact Droplet’s transfer allowance and price. Leave enough memory and CPU capacity for the chosen relay or encoding workload.
  4. Test before relying on it. Send a representative stream, check YouTube’s preview and stream health, and monitor CPU, memory, and network use on the Droplet. YouTube recommends testing and checking audio and video quality; these checks do not guarantee that a long-running server will stay connected.
  5. Plan recovery. Decide how you will detect a stopped encoder or lost connection and restart it, then verify the recovery process during testing. A stream that starts successfully is not necessarily one that will recover unattended after an interruption.

When to choose a dedicated CPU Droplet

Look at DigitalOcean’s CPU-Optimized Droplets when the stream requires real-time encoding, a representative test shows sustained CPU pressure or dropped frames, or you need more predictable CPU access. DigitalOcean describes CPU-Optimized Droplets as dedicated-CPU instances for CPU-intensive workloads including live streaming and video encoding. Compare the current price and specifications for the region and size you need; there is no published apples-to-apples YouTube streaming benchmark that establishes a particular upgrade as sufficient.

Common problems and what to check

  • Dropped frames or unstable output: Check whether the Droplet is encoding in real time and whether CPU use remains high. Reduce encoding load or test a dedicated CPU plan; also verify that available upload bandwidth meets the stream’s bitrate with headroom.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Recheck bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and connection stability against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Confirm that you are using RTMPS if appropriate and inspect the stream preview.
  • The stream stops after running for a while: Determine whether the encoder exited, the network connection failed, or the host ran short of resources. Monitor the process and system metrics during a long test, and verify that your restart or alerting method actually works.
  • Transfer use or cost is higher than expected: Recalculate from the actual bitrate and hours streamed, including primary and backup feeds and overhead. Check the allowance and pricing attached to the exact Droplet instead of relying on its maximum throughput figure.
  • The stream key or channel is rejected: Confirm the YouTube channel is eligible for live streaming, that the current stream key is configured correctly, and that the Live Control Room preview receives the intended feed.
