A colour-changing polymer developed by University of Pennsylvania researchers can preserve a visible record of force in laboratory tests, without a power supply. But the 2015 work demonstrated a materials-sensing concept—not a way to diagnose concussion, predict brain injury, or determine whether someone can safely return to play.
What did the researchers make?
In a 2015 study, Younghyun Cho, Suyeon Lee, Lindsay Ellerthorpe, Gang Feng, Gaoxiang Wu, Jie Yin and Shu Yang made a porous polymer structure known as an inverse opal. They began with self-assembled silica particles, infiltrated the spaces with uncrosslinked SU-8 thermoplastic photoresist, then removed the silica template. The resulting periodic pores interact with visible light, producing structural colour. The peer-reviewed paper, “Elastoplastic Inverse Opals as Power-Free Mechanochromic Sensors for Force Recording,” appeared in Advanced Functional Materials 25 (2015), pages 6041–6049; it was first published online on 26 August 2015. Read the paper via its DOI.
How does the colour change record force?
When compressed, the inverse opal’s pores deform, changing the optical stopband—the range of light the structure reflects. That changes its visible colour. Because the SU-8 deforms elastoplastically, the structure does not simply spring back to its original geometry when the force is removed. Its altered colour can therefore remain as a passive record that a load occurred. No battery or powered display is needed for that visible indication.
What did the 2015 laboratory measurements show?
Cho and colleagues reported a mechanical sensing range of 17.6–20.4 MPa and a stopband-shift-to-strain sensitivity of up to 5.7 nanometres per percent strain. These are measurements of material behaviour in the study, not clinical sensitivity figures or concussion thresholds.

- 【High-Precision Radar Sensing】Unlike traditional PIR motion sensors, this advanced 24GHz millimeter wave radar sensor can stably detect human presence even when people are sitting still or stationary, ensuring accurate detection in bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms and other home scenarios.
- 【Wide Zigbee Compatibility】 A Zigbee Hub is required. Works seamlessly with Echo devices (4th Gen, Plus, Studio, Show 10/8), SmartThings, Home Assistant, Hubitat, Tuya, and more.
- 【True Presence Automation】 Create smart routines in Alexa: lights turn on instantly when you enter, and stay on while you are present—even if you are reading or sleeping motionless. Solves the "lights turning off" issue of standard motion sensors.
- GREAT RANGE AND LONG BATTERY LIFE : Capable of detecting motion up to 20 feet (6 meters) away. 2 AAA batteries can last for 2 years in typical usage.
- 【Detects Even When You Are Still】 Say goodbye to waving your hands to keep the lights on! This Zigbee Human Presence Sensor uses sensitive radar waves to detect your presence even when you are sitting perfectly still, sleeping, or reading. It brings a truly intelligent experience to your home automation.
In one reported example, an inverse opal with a pristine stopband at 320 nm shifted to 570, 500 and 440 nm under applied normal forces of 30, 60 and 90 mN, respectively. The researchers connected the optical shifts with pore-size changes observed by microscopy. These force values and the MPa sensing range describe different test quantities and should not be treated as interchangeable.
How does it compare with reversible mechanochromic gels?
The paper contrasts the inverse opal with reversible mechanochromic photonic gels as a materials comparison, not as a comparison of medical devices:

| Material | Reported response range | What happens after unloading |
|---|---|---|
| Elastoplastic inverse opal | 17.6–20.4 MPa, reported by Cho and colleagues in 2015 | Its elastoplastic deformation can leave a lasting structural-colour change that records force. |
| Reversible mechanochromic photonic gels | Typically 10–100 kPa, as described by Cho and colleagues in 2015 | The paper says the gels recover their structure and colour after the load is removed. |
The different response ranges and recovery behaviour help explain the materials’ distinct uses; they do not show which would be more effective for identifying a brain injury.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCould it diagnose a concussion or be used in a helmet?
No clinical diagnostic capability was established. The cited sources do not report tests in people, clinical validation, regulatory clearance, or a commercial helmet sensor. Penn described integrating the material into protective headgear as a possible future application, not a completed product. An impact indicator could potentially prompt someone to seek attention, but a persistent colour change cannot by itself establish that a concussion occurred, measure an individual’s injury severity, or clear someone to return to play or duty.

- ATTENTION-GRABBING: Extremely loud 120dB alarm helps wake/alert homeowner that movement has been detected (audible up to 1,500-feet/457-meters away)
- USER-FRIENDLY WITH EASY INSTALLATION: 3 adjustable settings (chime/alarm/home and away); chime mode is ideal to alert you when children or guests are coming and going when you are at home; home and away mode allows you to come and go without worrying you’ll accidentally set the alarm off and can be armed when you require protection; no wiring needed
In Penn Today’s 28 September 2015 report, Shu Yang, a professor in Penn’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, described the intended idea this way: “If the force was large enough, and you could see that as easy as reading a litmus test, then you could immediately seek medical attention.” That is a statement about a proposed use, not a validated clinical conclusion. Read Penn Today’s report. The 2015 coverage also described the concept as a potential concussion-related application, rather than evidence of a diagnostic tool. Read Chemistry World’s coverage.
