Generally, yes. YouTube’s cited guidance does not prohibit churches from streaming recorded sermons, but the church must follow YouTube’s rules and have the necessary rights to every part of the recording. A 24/7 broadcast is different from a 24-hour archive: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR may be limited or unavailable.
What a church needs to check before going live
Permission to broadcast depends on the content and the rights behind it, not simply on whether the stream is religious or prerecorded. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights to use live content through Google services, including applicable music rights, and to comply with applicable laws. That is a general platform requirement, not a ruling on any particular church’s recordings or licenses. YouTube’s livestream terms set out those obligations.
Audit the whole recording
Check that the church owns or has permission to stream each element, not only the spoken sermon. A recording may include music, photographs, graphics, video clips, or other third-party material. Confirm that any permission covers livestreaming and the territories in which the stream will be available. If a license has limits, follow them; the platform guidance cannot determine what a church’s individual contract permits.
Expect live copyright checks
YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If its systems identify third-party material, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder image and warn the creator to stop streaming that content; leaving it in place can lead to a temporary interruption or termination. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also result in termination. A church that has permission to use an item may still need the rights owner to add its channel to the owner’s Content ID allowlist, or the stream could be interrupted. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

How to set up a continuous sermon stream
YouTube documents an encoder-based workflow for sending a live stream. An encoder-capable computer or other setup is needed for this do-it-yourself method; the church may already have suitable equipment or software. YouTube’s instructions explain how to connect an encoder using a server URL and stream key, but do not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the relevant interface and configuration.
- Prepare the recordings. Confirm that the church has streaming rights for the sermon and every included element. Arrange the recordings in the order you want them to play, and decide how the feed will continue when it reaches the end of the material.
- Set up the YouTube live stream. In YouTube’s live-streaming workflow, create or schedule an encoder-based stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Treat the stream key as a secret: anyone who has it may be able to send video to that stream. Do not publish it or share it beyond the people who need it.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder, select the prepared video source or playlist, and start the encoder’s output. Use YouTube’s encoder instructions for the current controls; settings and labels vary by encoder.
- Verify the live output. Check YouTube’s live preview and confirm that the correct recording is playing, the audio is audible, and the stream is reaching the intended channel before relying on it as a continuous feed.
- Plan for interruptions and records. Decide who will respond to a copyright warning, stream interruption, or encoder failure. If you need a dependable copy of the sermons, retain a separate recording rather than relying on the live-stream archive.
Plan around YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
A continuously running feed does not guarantee a complete on-demand recording or full rewind. YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as archives at all; its DVR guidance says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. The 12-hour figure is a documented threshold for archive and DVR caveats, not a guaranteed maximum stream length. If the church needs a complete archive or reliable replay, maintain a separate recording and plan around these limits. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.

Permission to stream is not permission to monetize
Copyright clearance and YouTube Partner Program eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and other video formats. The policy says monetized content should be original and authentic, and that repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible. Its separate reused-content rules can also put monetization at risk when material is repurposed without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value—even if the creator has permission to use it. YouTube’s channel monetization policies note a July 15, 2025 clarification of the inauthentic-content policy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSermons created by the church may be original work, but a channel that mostly repeats the same recordings or consists of minimally varied reused material could still draw monetization scrutiny. YouTube does not make a categorical monetization ruling for this specific church scenario. Do not assume that having broadcast rights guarantees monetization.
