Yes, a Chromebook may be able to start a YouTube livestream, but YouTube does not guarantee that a Chromebook can run unattended around the clock. The answer depends on the device, power and network behavior, and streaming method. There is also an important archive limitation: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a children’s stream, set the audience accurately and do not assume that a repetitive loop will qualify for monetization.
What a Chromebook can—and cannot—be relied on to do
YouTube supports livestreaming from a computer using either its webcam workflow or streaming software. Its webcam instructions specify Chrome 60 or later, which establishes browser compatibility; they do not certify every Chromebook model or promise continuous, unattended operation. See YouTube’s webcam streaming instructions and its computer livestreaming guidance.
Those are separate questions: starting a stream is not the same as keeping it running reliably for 24 hours, preserving a complete replay, or qualifying for monetization. The official guidance cited here does not publish a 24/7 reliability guarantee for Chromebook models. Because the model, ChromeOS version, media workflow, cooling, power behavior and network are unknown, test the exact setup before depending on it.

YouTube’s webcam workflow
YouTube’s webcam option is a browser-based route for going live. The channel must meet YouTube’s eligibility requirements, and the browser must be compatible. The documented Chrome 60-or-later requirement is not a Chromebook-specific endorsement and does not establish that a prerecorded playlist can be left playing indefinitely through this workflow. Check the current YouTube computer live-streaming guidance for channel eligibility and restrictions.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
An encoder workflow
YouTube also supports streaming through an encoder. This is the route to consider when the chosen software or playback arrangement can send the prerecorded material to YouTube. You will need a working source-and-encoder setup and a YouTube stream key; the Chromebook must remain powered, connected and able to sustain that workload. The supplied official guidance does not establish particular Chromebook models, encoder products, resolutions or settings as suitable for continuous operation, so verify the chosen setup rather than assuming compatibility.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive warning
A continuous 24-hour broadcast is not a safe way to ensure a complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That means a long stream may have no complete replay available afterward. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

- If preserving a YouTube replay matters, schedule separate sessions shorter than 12 hours rather than relying on one 24-hour session.
- If the chosen workflow supports it, keep a local recording as a separate backup. A YouTube archive and a local recording are not interchangeable guarantees.
- Confirm each session appears as expected on the channel or watch page; do not infer that a completed broadcast was archived just because it was live.
Keep the Chromebook powered and test the complete setup
Before using a Chromebook for an unattended stream, test the actual device, playback method, encoder if used, network and planned session length. Keep the lid open unless you have verified the behavior of that exact setup; the official material cited here does not establish how consumer Chromebooks behave with the lid closed.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the channel can go live. Review YouTube’s current computer streaming requirements and any channel restrictions before building the setup.
- Run a test stream. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring. Check that the preview, video and audio are correct, and confirm the stream can be viewed on the channel or watch page and on a mobile device.
- Test the whole planned session. Observe whether the Chromebook stays powered, connected and responsive for the duration you intend to run it. A brief successful test does not prove 24/7 reliability.
- Check the archive separately. If archiving is important, verify the resulting replay and maintain a local backup where the workflow supports recording.
- For an encoder setup, check recovery behavior. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing failover and monitoring audio and video. Confirm that the encoder behaves as expected if the connection drops; do not assume a stream will resume without testing.
Google documents always-on power controls for managed, enrolled ChromeOS kiosk devices, not as universal settings for every consumer Chromebook. Its kiosk instructions specify setting idle action to “Do nothing,” screen-dim and screen-off timeouts to zero, and allowing the kiosk app to manage power. Those controls require kiosk enrollment; see Google’s ChromeOS device policy instructions. Do not treat them as ordinary settings available on every personal Chromebook.

Set the audience correctly for children’s content
YouTube requires creators to set the audience for their content, including livestreams. If the stream is made for kids, mark it accordingly rather than choosing a setting to preserve features or revenue. YouTube says made-for-kids content loses features including live chat, comments, notifications and personalized advertising; contextual ads may still appear. See YouTube’s audience-setting guidance.
Do not assume a looping stream will be monetized
Being able to broadcast continuously does not establish eligibility for ads or other YouTube revenue. YouTube’s monetization policy clarification dated July 15, 2025 says repetitive or mass-produced content is covered by its inauthentic-content policy and is ineligible for monetization. This was described as a clarification of the existing policy, not a new rule that began on that date. A prerecorded loop is not automatically monetizable; review the content’s originality, rights and the current policy before relying on income. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

When to use a cloud service instead
If the goal is to keep prerecorded video streaming to YouTube without leaving a Chromebook running, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so a computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo.
