A cheap electric pressure washer can handle some small, lightly soiled patios and suitable siding, but it is not a safe all-purpose choice for cars, patios, and siding alike. Consumer Reports advises against pressure-washing car paint because the jet can nick or damage it. For large, grimy concrete areas, a light-duty washer may work slowly; renting or using a higher-output machine may be more practical.

Can you use a cheap pressure washer on a car?

For routine car cleaning, Consumer Reports recommends a car wash or a garden hose with a soapy sponge instead of a pressure washer. Its June 9, 2026 surface guide warns that a pressure jet can nick or damage paint, potentially creating a path to rust. For problem areas on wheels, use a specialized wheel cleaner. Consumer Reports’ surface guide explains the risk.

One manufacturer manual gives separate vehicle-rinsing instructions and recommends applying detergent at low pressure, but that is advice for that specific washer—not evidence that pressure washing is safe for every paint finish, vehicle, or machine. If you proceed despite the general caution, follow both the vehicle and washer manuals; do not assume a broad nozzle or low setting eliminates the risk.

Can a cheap pressure washer clean a patio?

It depends on the patio material, its size, and how dirty it is. Consumer Reports says a washer capable of at least 1,500 psi can clean concrete; 2,500–3,000 psi can do the job faster. Its 2026 buying guide says some electric and battery-powered washers can handle small patios, so a modest electric model can be adequate for a small, lightly soiled area when its manual permits the surface. A large or heavily soiled concrete patio is likely to take longer with a light-duty unit.

Those concrete figures are not a universal prescription for pavers, wood, or other softer and more delicate patio materials. Check the washer manual, begin with a broad, low-pressure spray, and test an inconspicuous spot before continuing. Consumer Reports maps a 25-degree nozzle to general patio cleaning and warns against 0-degree nozzles, which can concentrate force enough to damage surfaces.

Can a cheap pressure washer clean siding?

Often, but the siding material and its condition matter. Consumer Reports says vinyl and fiber-cement siding can typically withstand pressure washing. Aluminum can dent, so use the lowest setting and a broad nozzle. Do not pressure-wash shingle siding.

Water intrusion is a key risk: avoid spraying into gaps around doors and windows or beneath lap joints, where water can get behind siding and promote mold. Consumer Reports gives 1,200–1,500 psi as general recommended pressure for siding, not a guaranteed safe setting for every wall; distance, nozzle, direction, material, and condition also affect the risk.

For old wood siding on a house built before 1978, Consumer Reports advises having exterior paint tested by an EPA-licensed lead-remediation specialist before disturbing it. Check warranty terms as well, since pressure washing may void coverage for some products. The surface guidance from Consumer Reports covers these material-specific cautions.

What matters when choosing a budget washer?

“Cheap” does not tell you whether a washer suits a particular job. Compare the machine’s rated operating pressure and water flow, nozzle options, hose and cord reach, detergent method, and the surfaces and level of soil you expect to clean. Peak pressure alone does not establish useful performance. Consumer Reports explains the difference between pressure and flow in its pressure-washer buying guide.

  • Operating pressure and flow: Check the ratings at the working setting, not just a peak-pressure number. Choose for the surface and cleaning task, and stay within the machine and surface manufacturers’ instructions.
  • Nozzles and adjustment: Consumer Reports’ safety guide maps 40-degree sprays to delicate surfaces and vehicles, and 25-degree sprays to general patio cleaning. It warns against 0-degree sprays. Confirm which tips come with the washer and which pressure settings it supports.
  • Reach: Longer hoses and cords improve mobility. Consumer Reports gives 30 feet as an ideal minimum for each; check the actual lengths rather than assuming a low-cost model has enough reach.
  • Detergent setup: A detergent tank or low-pressure detergent tip can be useful if you often use soap or compatible additives. Confirm that the detergent is approved for the machine and surface.
  • Manual and warranty: Read the instructions for the exact model and surface, especially for painted, soft, older, or water-vulnerable materials. Check whether pressure washing affects warranty coverage.

Is buying or renting the better choice?

A light-duty electric washer is a reasonable fit when the work is occasional and limited to modest jobs such as a small patio or compatible siding. A more powerful machine may clean a large or demanding concrete area faster. Consumer Reports says gas models generally serve large, demanding areas faster, while electric models can suit smaller jobs.

For an occasional heavy-duty job, renting can avoid storing and maintaining a larger washer. Regular use may make ownership more attractive, but there is no universal break-even point: frequency, rental availability, storage, and upkeep all affect the decision. Consumer Reports discusses these trade-offs in its buying guide.

How to reduce damage and injury risk

  1. Read the washer manual and surface guidance. Confirm that pressure washing is allowed for the material and learn the machine’s nozzle, detergent, and operating instructions.
  2. Wear protective gear. Consumer Reports recommends eye protection, long pants, gloves, sturdy closed-toe footwear, and hearing protection.
  3. Keep the spray away from people and pets. The jet can cause injury as well as property damage. Consumer Reports reported 6,057 pressure-washer-related emergency-room visits in 2014, an estimate attributed to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission; 14 percent of those visits led to additional hospitalization, according to Consumer Reports’ 2016 article. These are historical figures, not current annual estimates.
  4. Start broad and test first. Use an allowed broad spray at a distance on an inconspicuous spot, then assess the surface before cleaning the visible area. Avoid the 0-degree nozzle for ordinary household cleaning.
  5. Work carefully around siding. Keep the spray out of joints and openings where water could get behind the material. Follow the manual’s detergent and rinsing technique; one BEAST manual, for example, recommends low-pressure detergent application, small sections, and a sweeping rinse, but instructions vary by model.

Consumer Reports quotes pressure-washer manufacturer Briggs & Stratton: “Pressure washers are tools, not toys.” Its safety article provides additional precautions.
