A camera drone is generally chosen to make stable, composed aerial photos and video; an FPV drone is flown by watching its live onboard camera view, often through goggles, for a more immersive style of piloting. They are not mutually exclusive categories: some FPV drones are built to film, and some camera drones offer immersive viewing options. Choose by the shots and flying experience you want, then compare the aircraft’s camera, stabilization, controls, and required gear.

What do “camera drone” and “FPV drone” mean?

Camera drone

“Camera drone” usually describes an aircraft selected primarily for aerial photography or video. Its controls and flight assistance are commonly oriented toward predictable movement and stable framing, making it easier to concentrate on composing a shot.

On applicable DJI camera drones, for example, Normal mode uses positioning and stabilization systems, while Cine mode limits speed and movement for smoother shooting. Those are product- and mode-specific features, not guarantees that every camera drone has the same assistance.

FPV drone

FPV means first-person view. The aircraft’s onboard camera sends a live view to the pilot, commonly through goggles. DJI describes FPV as spanning racing, filming, and freestyle—not racing alone. Immersive flight, quick changes in direction, close passes, and dynamic movement are common reasons to choose this approach.

The label describes a way of viewing and flying, not a promise about image quality or camera capability. An FPV aircraft may be designed to capture footage, and a camera drone may provide an immersive or FPV-like view. DJI’s FPV guide explains the term and the range of FPV styles.

How the footage and flying experience differ

Choose a camera-drone style for deliberate compositions

If your priority is a steady view of a landscape, property, or event, camera-drone-style operation is built around framing and controlled movement. A slow pan, hover, or planned pass can keep the subject legible and the shot composed. Modes that limit speed or movement can help, where the specific model offers them.

Do not assume all camera drones have obstacle avoidance, identical stabilization, or the same degree of automation. Check the aircraft’s own specifications and supported modes for the features that matter to your shot.

Choose FPV for an immersive, moving perspective

FPV makes the pilot’s view feel closer to the aircraft’s path. That perspective suits racing and freestyle, but can also produce dynamic filming. It is not inherently lower quality than camera-drone footage: results depend on the aircraft’s camera and stabilization, the control method, and how the shot is flown.

Likewise, “FPV” does not mean every flight must be fast or close to objects. The term covers different aircraft and styles. Compare the actual camera and flight capabilities rather than treating the category name as a specification.

How difficult is an FPV drone to fly?

Difficulty depends on the aircraft and selected control mode, so it is too broad to say every FPV drone is harder to fly than every camera drone. DJI’s Avata 2 materials describe beginner-oriented controls as well as manual mode with a compatible FPV controller. DJI recommends simulator practice before flying a real FPV drone, a useful way to learn unfamiliar controls without starting in the air.

What equipment and setup should you compare?

A category label does not tell you what is in the box or what else you need. In particular, an FPV setup may depend on compatible goggles and a compatible controller; do not assume any headset or transmitter will work with any aircraft.

DJI Avata 2 is one concrete example of a ready-made FPV product. DJI documents its goggles and controller compatibility, manual-mode support, and camera stabilization in the Avata 2 FAQ. Treat those as facts about that model, not universal FPV features. Verify the current manufacturer listing for the exact product and package before choosing accessories.

What do U.S. flight rules say about goggles?

In the United States, wearing goggles does not by itself satisfy visual-line-of-sight requirements. Under the FAA’s Part 107 guidance, a pilot using FPV or similar technology must have a visual observer keep the drone within unaided sight. The FAA states: “If you use First Person View or similar technology, you must have a visual observer always keep your drone within unaided sight (for example, no binoculars).” See the FAA Part 107 guidance, dated July 6, 2026.

Recreational flyers also have visual-line-of-sight obligations under the FAA’s recreational drone guidance, which distinguishes recreational flying from other operations. Rules depend on how and where you fly; readers outside the United States should check their own aviation authority’s requirements.

Which type should you choose?

  • Choose a camera-drone style if your main goal is stable, composed aerial imagery and you value assisted operation or modes designed for smoother movement.
  • Choose an FPV style if you want to pilot from a live onboard view and prioritize immersive movement, racing, freestyle, or dynamic filming.
  • Compare specific models, not labels if you want both. Check the camera, stabilization, available control modes, required viewing gear, and compatible controller for the shot and setup you have in mind.
  • Include the full setup and rules in your decision if goggles or specialized controls are involved. Verify model-specific compatibility and the flight requirements where you plan to operate.
