If you mean Cambridge Audio’s Melomania M100, choose the Sony WF-1000XM5 if effective noise cancelling matters most; choose the M100 if its longer stated battery life or aptX codec support better suits your needs. Tom’s Guide found the Sony’s ANC more effective, but tied the models on sound and overall score. Cambridge also has newer A100 earbuds, so check the model name before comparing prices or buying.
Which Cambridge Audio earbuds are being compared?
“Cambridge Audio earbuds” can refer to more than one generation. The direct comparison available is between the Cambridge Audio Melomania M100 and Sony WF-1000XM5. The M100 is an older model that Cambridge’s U.S. product page labels as archived; that label does not establish whether retailers still have stock.
Cambridge’s newer A100 family, including the A100 SE announced in 2026, is relevant if you are shopping for current-generation Cambridge earbuds. But the available coverage does not directly test either A100 model against the WF-1000XM5, so the head-to-head findings below apply only to the M100.
How the M100 and WF-1000XM5 compare
| Feature | Sony WF-1000XM5 | Cambridge Audio Melomania M100 |
|---|---|---|
| Noise cancelling | Tom’s Guide found its noise cancelling more effective in the direct comparison. | Adaptive ANC; Tom’s Guide said it held its own but let more sound through. |
| Music playback per charge | Up to 8 hours with noise cancelling on; up to 12 hours off, according to Sony. | Up to 10 hours with ANC on; up to 16 hours off, according to Cambridge Audio. |
| Total playback including case | Not stated in the cited Sony specification page. | Up to 33 hours with ANC on; up to 52 hours off, according to Cambridge Audio. |
| Bluetooth and codecs | Bluetooth 5.3; SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3. | Bluetooth 5.3; aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, AAC and SBC. |
| Other listed features | Multipoint and ambient sound mode. | Melomania Connect app, custom EQ, wear detection and Qi charging. |
| Water resistance | IPX4-equivalent, according to Sony. | IPX4 splash resistance, according to Cambridge Audio. |
| Direct review score | 88/100 from Tom’s Guide in its 2024 comparison. | 88/100 from Tom’s Guide in its 2024 comparison. |
The manufacturer battery figures are maximum music-playback claims, not guarantees; actual life varies with settings and use. Sony’s cited figures are for music playback, not its separate communication-time estimates. Neither IPX4 rating means the earbuds are suitable for immersion.

Choose the Sony WF-1000XM5 for stronger noise cancelling
In Tom’s Guide’s direct M100-versus-WF-1000XM5 comparison, the Sony blocked noise more effectively. That is a reviewer’s finding from that comparison, not a standardized laboratory measurement. If you often listen in noisy places and ANC is your deciding factor, the Sony has the clearest evidence-backed advantage here.
Choose the M100 for longer stated battery life or aptX
Cambridge rates the M100 for up to 10 hours per charge with ANC on, compared with Sony’s up to 8 hours for the WF-1000XM5 under the same stated condition. With ANC off, Cambridge lists up to 16 hours and Sony up to 12 hours. These are each manufacturer’s stated maxima, not results from a shared test.

Do not assume either codec set will improve playback on your phone or computer: check the source device’s supported codecs and settings first.
Sound and price are not simple tie-breakers
Tom’s Guide gave both earbuds 88/100 overall and called sound a tie, noting that the choice came down to preferred sonic signature. Treat that as the reviewer’s assessment, not proof that every listener will hear them alike. Fit and tuning preference can make an in-person trial or a retailer’s return policy useful when sound is your main concern.
