Gigabyte’s X870E AERO X3D WOOD makes a PC component’s visible surfaces part of the build’s design. Its pale finish, wood-inspired accents and leather pull tab give it a warmer, more furniture-like look than the usual gaming motherboard. The wood effect is not solid wood: Tom’s Hardware describes a coated, architectural-grade material designed to simulate wood grain and texture.
That distinctive appearance comes with the substance expected of a premium AM5 board: support for Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 processors, four M.2 slots, dual 5GbE networking, Wi-Fi 7 and two USB4 Type-C ports. It is especially compelling for a windowed or open build where the motherboard will be seen, though storage-lane sharing and older onboard audio are worth weighing before buying.
Why the design stands out
Most motherboards treat appearance as a matter of heatsink color and lighting. The X870E AERO X3D WOOD takes a more architectural approach, using a light-colored board and wood-look details to make the hardware feel at home in a visible workspace or living area. Gigabyte announced it at CES on January 19, 2026, positioning it for enthusiasts, creators and gamers who want their PC to fit its surroundings.

The name can suggest more than the product actually promises. Tom’s Hardware says the accents are not real wood; it describes a premium architectural-grade material with a coating intended to reproduce wood grain and texture. The board also has a leather pull tab. So the appeal is the warm, wood-inspired finish, not a solid-wood component.

What the X870E AERO X3D WOOD offers
Gigabyte’s specifications place the board on AMD’s AM5 platform, with an X870E chipset and support for Ryzen 7000-, 8000- and 9000-series processors. Its headline connectivity and expansion features are aimed at a high-end desktop rather than a bare-bones system.
| Feature | What Gigabyte lists |
|---|---|
| CPU platform | AMD AM5; Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 series support |
| Memory | DDR5 overclocking up to 9000 MT/s; achievable speed depends on the CPU and memory configuration |
| Storage | Four M.2 slots supporting PCIe 5.0/4.0 |
| Expansion | Two PCIe 5.0 slots |
| Wired networking | Dual 5GbE LAN |
| Wireless networking | Wi-Fi 7 |
| USB | Two USB4 Type-C ports |
| Power delivery | 16+2+2 phase VRM design |
The 9000 MT/s memory figure is an overclocking ceiling advertised by Gigabyte, not a guarantee for every processor and DDR5 kit. Memory speed depends on the exact CPU and memory configuration.

Convenience and thermal features
Gigabyte also highlights X3D Turbo Mode 2.0, M.2 EZ-Latch features and DriverBIOS, which it says includes pre-installed Wi-Fi drivers. These are intended to make setup and component installation more convenient, but they do not remove the need to check CPU, memory and device compatibility for a particular build.

What independent testing says
Tom’s Hardware published its review on February 11, 2026. Reviewer Joe Shields described the board as pairing “a standout wood-themed design with strong features and excellent performance.” The review reported strong results in its tested productivity workloads and above-average game performance, using BIOS with AGESA 1.2.8.0. Those findings reflect that publication’s test setup, not a guarantee of how the board will perform with every system configuration.
The review also identifies two practical drawbacks: M.2/USB4 lane sharing and a last-generation Realtek ALC1220 audio codec. Lane sharing matters if you plan to populate multiple storage slots while using USB4, so check the board’s current manual and layout documentation against the drives and ports you intend to use. Buyers who rely on high-end onboard audio should also compare the codec with their expectations or plan for a separate audio solution.

Who should consider it—and what to check
The board’s strongest case is for someone building a capable AM5 PC that will be visible, and who values the coordinated finish enough to make it a deciding factor. Its networking, USB4 and expansion options also suit demanding desktop use. The design matters less in a closed case or a setup where the motherboard is rarely visible.

- Visual fit: Decide whether the wood-inspired accents and pale finish work with your case and other components.
- Platform: Confirm your Ryzen processor is supported and review Gigabyte’s latest CPU support information.
- Memory: Check the current compatibility list for your DDR5 kit rather than assuming the advertised maximum speed will apply.
- Storage and USB: Review the current slot-sharing documentation if you expect to use several M.2 drives and USB4 at the same time.
- Networking and I/O: Make sure dual 5GbE, Wi-Fi 7 and USB4 match the equipment you will actually connect.
- Audio: Consider whether the onboard ALC1220 codec meets your needs.
- Value: Compare its price at the time you shop with other X870E boards; retailer pricing and availability change.
Verdict
The X870E AERO X3D WOOD stands out because it combines a coherent, wood-inspired look with a substantial high-end feature set. It is not real wood, and it is not without trade-offs: buyers should pay particular attention to storage and USB4 lane sharing and decide whether the onboard audio is sufficient. For a visible build where design is part of the point, it is an unusually attractive motherboard; for a hidden system, its distinctive finish may not justify choosing it over a more conventional alternative.
