A call pickup service is a phone-system feature that lets an authorized user answer a call ringing on another phone. It can be limited to phones in the same pickup group or, in some systems, let a user target a specific phone. This is different from a business answering service, which takes calls on behalf of a company.
How call pickup works
A phone system makes a ringing call available to another authorized user. The user answers it from their own phone rather than walking to the phone that is ringing. An administrator typically configures which users or phones can pick up calls together.
Types of call pickup
Group pickup
With group pickup, a user can answer a call ringing on another phone assigned to the same pickup group. The group defines the reach of the feature; it does not necessarily include every phone in a company. OpenVox and Verizon describe this group-based behavior in their feature guides: OpenVox and Verizon.
Designated or directed pickup
Designated pickup lets the user target a specific phone’s ringing call. Some systems use the term directed pickup for a broader version that can reach beyond a user’s pickup group. Comcast describes directed call pickup as extending beyond a group to an enterprise. The scope and terminology depend on the phone system: Comcast Business.

How users answer a call
The exact action varies by provider and configuration. It may involve a phone feature key or an access code. For example, Comcast’s guide describes going off-hook and dialing a feature access code to answer a call in the pickup group. That code is specific to the system and should not be assumed to work on other services.
What administrators configure
An administrator sets up pickup groups and assigns users or phones. Rules can differ across systems. Verizon’s guide, for example, says a user can belong to only one pickup group and group members must be from the same site; those are Verizon-specific constraints, not universal limits.

What to check in your phone-system documentation
- Whether pickup is group-based, targeted to a specific phone, or available beyond a group.
- Which users and phones are eligible, and whether group membership has site or group-count restrictions.
- The exact method for answering a ringing call, such as a feature key or access code.
- Whether an administrator must enable the feature or assign group membership.
