Call of Duty: WWII and Mafia III briefly appeared as free PS4 downloads in some European PlayStation Store regions on 6 October 2026, with reports saying no PlayStation Plus subscription was needed to claim them. The listings were inconsistent, however, and later reporting said they had been pulled or repriced. This was a short-lived store irregularity—not a confirmed Sony giveaway.
Which PS4 games appeared free?
The reported listings were for the standard edition of Call of Duty: WWII and the base game of Mafia III. They were not the same as higher-tier editions: Notebookcheck reported that Mafia III: Definitive Edition remained paid in the UK store listing it checked. Notebookcheck’s 6 October 2026 report covered the initial appearance.

Where were the listings available, and did they require PS Plus?
Notebookcheck reported the free Call of Duty: WWII listing in the UK and Poland, and a free UK listing for Mafia III. Outcomes varied by storefront and account; reports did not establish that the games were free across Europe. Both Notebookcheck and Push Square said the listings could be claimed without an active PlayStation Plus subscription, but checkout results were inconsistent. Push Square’s coverage, updated 6 October 2026, also described the changing availability.

What happened to the listings?
Push Square’s update said the UK Mafia III listing had been pulled and the UK price for Call of Duty: WWII had returned to £54.99. The same coverage earlier reported US prices of $29.99 for Mafia III and $59.99 for Call of Duty: WWII; those were reported prices, not confirmation of current prices in every region. PlayStation Store pages opened during reporting returned an error, so the latest status comes from updated coverage rather than a readable live product page.

Was it a confirmed giveaway, and is it safe to claim?
No official Sony explanation was established in the available reporting. The incident may have involved a pricing or catalog error, but that cause is unconfirmed. Some users reportedly encountered the checkout message “Pricing: SKU is invalid.” A reader discussion also raised concerns about account suspensions and bans, but neither Sony nor the reporting established whether claiming a listing posed an account risk. Do not treat the listing as a guaranteed offer or assume Sony has confirmed its legitimacy. The Reddit discussion records user reports, not an official Sony answer.
Will a game remain in your library if you claimed it?
That is unknown. The reports do not establish whether Sony will honor licenses obtained while the listings appeared free, or whether access could later change. A listing appearing in a library is not, by itself, confirmation of Sony’s policy for this incident.

What should you do if you still want either game?
Check the PlayStation Store using the account and region where you intend to play, and verify the exact edition and price before completing a transaction. Do not rely on an old link, screenshot, or report as proof that a free offer is still active. If you missed the digital listing and want Call of Duty: WWII, a physical PS4 disc is another option; that is a paid alternative, and availability and price depend on the seller.
