In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, a strong loadout is a coordinated set of weapons, equipment, and other selections for a particular mode, map, and playstyle—not simply a weapon with five attachments. Custom Loadouts unlock at Level 4. Build around the engagement distance and role you expect, then check what each attachment improves and what it makes harder to do.
What goes into a loadout?
Activision’s Modern Warfare III: Weapons and Loadouts guide says Custom Loadouts become available after you reach Level 4. A typical setup includes a primary weapon, secondary weapon, lethal and tactical equipment, and a field upgrade. Other gear and perk-like selections also affect how the setup plays.

Choose these pieces to support the same plan. A weapon suited to medium range, for example, may pair with equipment and selections that help you reach or hold those engagements. Consider the mode and map as well as your preferred playstyle: a setup that works in one situation may not suit another.

Activision suggests starting with an assault rifle if you are unsure. Assault rifles are generally versatile at medium range and can also work at shorter and longer distances. That makes one a reasonable starting point, not a guarantee that an assault rifle is the strongest choice for every mode or balance update. Premade loadouts can also help you get started, and the Firing Range offers a place to learn how weapons and equipment behave.

How to build around a weapon in Gunsmith
Gunsmith lets you configure supported weapons with attachments. Most weapons support up to five attachments, though the maximum can vary. More attachments do not automatically mean a better build: a benefit in one area can come with a drawback in another, and several drawbacks can add up.
Start with the job you want the weapon to do, then choose attachments that support it. Compare effects in Gunsmith rather than judging an attachment only by its headline benefit. A setup that improves recoil control may cost mobility; a larger magazine may slow handling. The right tradeoff depends on how you intend to use the weapon.
Activision’s documented MCW example

- Combat means making choices — different loadouts, different paths through the mission. Combat missions that provide more player choice. There is no one-size-fits-all solution – it is your choice whether to take the stealthy approach or go loud taking on any and all foes.

How weapon platforms and shared attachment unlocks work
Weapons in the same platform, also called a weapon family, can share pools of attachments. Some attachments unlock once and can then be used on other eligible weapons, but compatibility still matters: an unlocked attachment is not necessarily usable on every weapon.
Activision identifies muzzles, underbarrels, ammunition, lasers, and optics as universal attachment categories. Other categories may be limited to a weapon class or platform. Check the weapon and attachment details in-game to confirm eligibility and progression requirements; unlock conditions can change.
What Aftermarket Parts do
Aftermarket Parts, including Conversion Kits, can substantially change a weapon’s function and character. Rather than choosing a different weapon for every new role, you may be able to adapt a familiar one with a compatible part. Activision recommends considering them when a weapon needs a different purpose for a map or challenge.

Which weapon stats should you compare?
Activision’s launch overview lists damage, fire rate, range, accuracy, recoil control, mobility, handling, rounds, and reserve among the weapon statistics. Use Gunsmith’s details and comparison options to understand how an attachment affects the weapon; avoid assuming that a change is beneficial in practice just because one displayed stat improves.
- Damage and range: Consider whether the weapon’s intended engagement distance suits the map and your role.
- Accuracy and recoil control: These describe different aspects of keeping shots on target. A build may favor steadier fire while giving up mobility or handling.
- Mobility and handling: These matter when movement and weapon readiness are central to how you play.
- Rounds and reserve: Consider both the magazine capacity and available ammunition, not just the weapon’s other performance traits.
The official overview describes the launch-era weapon categories and Gunsmith statistics in Upping Your Arsenal: Primary and Secondary Weapons Detail for Modern Warfare III, published November 3, 2023. Its inventory figures are historical: Activision reported 37 new weapons and six Aftermarket Parts in the pre-season arsenal, alongside 77 weapons carried forward from Modern Warfare II and six seasons of weapon content, for a stated total of 114 at launch. Those 2023 figures are not a current inventory count.
When an official build is not a “best loadout”
A build example shows how to configure a weapon for a stated purpose; it does not establish that the setup is strongest now. Activision’s guide explains that the best configuration varies by playstyle and that attachment downsides can outweigh their benefits. The MCW example is not presented as a date-stamped live-meta ranking.
No current dated balance data or live ranked-build evidence is established here, so a present-day “best weapons” list would go beyond the available evidence. Weapon balance, unlock conditions, and competitive recommendations can change. Treat official examples as starting points, then use current in-game information to decide whether a build fits your mode, map, and intended role.
