Choose Ground War if you want to fight over five lettered zones and hold them. Choose Invasion if you want to win by eliminating enemies. Both are large-scale team modes in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, both use vehicles, and both can be played with up to 32 players per team, but they reward different habits. Activision’s official Modern Warfare III multiplayer mode guide is the source for the rules described below.
How Ground War works
Ground War is a zone-control mode. Two teams contest zones A, B, C, D and E, and the team that builds the stronger position on the map is the one that scores. Capturing a zone is a matter of presence and numbers rather than individual kills.

Capturing and holding zones
- Capture: Stand in a zone’s area until its capture meter fills.
- Speed: More teammates on the zone shorten capture time.
- Contesting: If opponents are present, the zone is contested and capture progress stops.
- Defending a held flag: Teams already holding a flag can enter its capture area to slow enemy capture progress.
- Points: Controlled flags generate points periodically. The guide does not list a per-zone point value, so the points-per-minute rate for each zone is not stated.
- Forward spawns: Captured objectives open forward spawning locations for your team.
Vehicles on the Ground War map
The map is large, and the guide recommends using vehicles to reach distant flags. It also recommends launchers or sticky grenades against armored vehicles. Vehicles are therefore part of the normal flow of the mode, not an optional extra.

- Do not keep forcing a heavily guarded flag when another objective is exposed.
- Use the map’s vehicles to move between distant objectives.
- Clear or deter armored threats with launchers and sticky grenades.
- Earn XP by capturing objectives and by eliminating enemies near them.
How Invasion works
Invasion is an elimination mode. Teams score for eliminating opponents, and the guide assigns different values to the two kinds of enemy operator you can remove.
Invasion scoring values
| Eliminated target | Points listed in the guide |
|---|---|
| AI operator | 1 point |
| Player operator | 5 points |
AI soldiers therefore add to the score, but a player operator is worth five times as much. A team that relies only on AI kills will climb more slowly than one that wins the player-versus-player fights.

Respawns and safe territory
Instead of choosing a new spawn after each elimination, players respawn in their team’s safe territory. The guide describes these fixed safe areas as available throughout the match. If a push stalls, they give the team a place to regroup and approach the objective from a different direction.
Vehicles and the Heavy Chopper tactic
The guide recommends using available vehicles. It also describes a tactic in which a player briefly pilots a Heavy Chopper, or another vehicle, so that friendly players can respawn in a wave near the objective. This is a tactic the guide describes, not a guarantee that every vehicle is available in every playlist or behaves the same way in each.

| Usual public-match win target | 1,500 points | 1,500 points |
Which mode fits your preference
Pick by the objective you enjoy most:
- Ground War suits players who like rotating between objectives, contesting flags, and holding ground once it is taken.
- Invasion suits players who prefer a large battle built around eliminations and who like to regroup in safe territory and push again.
This is an inference from the objectives the guide documents, not a measured finding about what players prefer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the 1,500-point target means
The guide gives 1,500 points as the usual win target for public matches in both modes. It is a common target, not a fixed rule, so a match can be decided on a different basis depending on how it is configured. Use it as a guide to pacing rather than a guaranteed end point.

Availability and how current this guide is
The mode guide is the main source for the rules above, but the copy used for this article was last indexed in 2025. It does not confirm whether Ground War or Invasion appears in the current playlist rotation, in every region, or on every platform. The launch-era maps are not a complete current list either. Check the in-game playlist menu to see which modes are selectable on your account and platform before planning a session around either one.
