To play Call of Duty on PC with a controller, connect a compatible controller by USB or Bluetooth, confirm that Windows and your game launcher can detect it, then select controller input in the game’s settings. The exact menu labels can vary by Call of Duty release.
Connect your controller to the PC
Use a USB connection for a wired setup, or Bluetooth if both your controller and PC support it. Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance covers compatible wired and Bluetooth Game Input controllers: How to connect a controller to a PC for gaming on Windows 11.
You can use a controller you already own; the setup steps do not require a particular brand or model. A compatible USB cable may be needed for a wired connection.

Check that the PC and launcher recognize the controller
Test the controller before changing game settings. This helps identify whether a problem is with the connection, the launcher, or Call of Duty itself.

- Check Windows input: Confirm that the controller is connected and that button presses register. Microsoft’s guidance points to Steam’s Test Input feature for checking button input.
- If you play through Steam, check Steam: Open Steam > Settings > Controller and review the controller settings. Steam also documents how Steam Input works with controllers in its Getting Started for Players guide.
- If you use another launcher, do not assume Steam’s settings apply. Call of Duty PC installation can use Battle.net or Steam; Activision’s Warzone installation and setup guide covers both options.
Select controller input in Call of Duty
Launch the game and open its settings. Find the controller or input-device option and select controller rather than keyboard and mouse. The exact path and wording depend on the release.
Blizzard’s PC controls guide for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War describes switching between keyboard/mouse and controller and adjusting controller-play settings. Treat it as an example for that title, not a guaranteed menu path for every Call of Duty game: Black Ops Cold War PC controls and settings.

Troubleshoot a controller Call of Duty does not recognize
Work through the connection layers in order. If the controller fails an earlier check, resolve that before changing settings in the game.

- Windows does not receive input: Reconnect the controller, check the USB connection or Bluetooth pairing, and test the buttons again.
- Windows receives input, but Steam does not: Review Steam > Settings > Controller. If external remapping software is running, it may affect how Steam interfaces with the controller; Steam documents this interaction in its controller setup guide.
- The launcher recognizes the controller, but the game does not: Open Call of Duty’s settings and check that controller is the active input device. Look for the wording used by your particular release.
These steps narrow down where recognition is failing; they do not guarantee that every controller, launcher, or game version will behave identically.
