CachyOS can make an Arch Linux–based desktop easier to get running by guiding you through choices such as desktop environment, boot manager, and packages. It does not remove the need to understand your disks, make careful partitioning decisions, or maintain a rolling-release system afterward. That balance can make it a useful way to explore the Arch ecosystem without starting with a fully manual installation.

What CachyOS changes about getting started with Arch

CachyOS describes its Desktop Edition as an optimized Arch Linux desktop, with CPU-specific package builds and a tuned kernel. Its graphical installer also offers selectable environments and packages, rather than requiring you to assemble every part of a desktop system yourself. Those are project-provided descriptions and features, not independent proof that CachyOS will be faster on every computer or workload.

The practical distinction is how much setup the installer helps organize. You still make decisions about the system you want, and disk partitioning remains consequential. Once installed, CachyOS remains an Arch-related rolling system: a guided installation does not eliminate ongoing updates or the possibility of troubleshooting.

What the CachyOS installation guides you through

The desktop installer presents a graphical sequence for configuring a system. CachyOS says its online installer offers more than 17 desktop environments, including KDE Plasma, GNOME, COSMIC, Hyprland, Niri, Sway, i3, and XFCE. Choices and availability can change; consult the live CachyOS download page for current edition information.

  1. Boot the CachyOS ISO from a prepared USB drive.
  2. Choose language, region, and keyboard settings.
  3. Configure disk partitions. The official guide strongly prefers manual partitioning.
  4. Select a boot manager and desktop environment.
  5. Choose packages, set account credentials, and review the installation summary.
  6. Start the installation and follow the on-screen prompts.

The graphical sequence makes choices visible, but it cannot decide which disk or partition is safe to change. For UEFI systems, the official manual layouts give boot-partition guidance that depends on the selected boot manager; their illustrated layouts allocate at least 20,000 MiB for root. These are not universal partition instructions. Use the guidance that matches your boot manager and existing disk layout, and verify each target before applying changes. The CachyOS desktop and laptop installation guide was last updated May 20, 2026.

Install CachyOS alongside Windows: prepare before partitioning

Dual-booting adds risk because both operating systems rely on disk and boot configuration. CachyOS’s guide says, “Dual booting Windows and Linux is not 100% reliable.” It also cautions that the installer’s “Install alongside” and “Replace partition” options can fail, and states: “Manual partitioning is strongly preferred when installing CachyOS.”

  • Disabling Windows Fast Startup and hibernation.
  • Disabling BitLocker and Secure Boot.
  • Preparing an empty partition of at least 30 GiB.
  • Preparing a bootable CachyOS USB drive.

The 30 GiB figure is the guide’s stated minimum for the empty partition in this dual-boot preparation; it is not a complete partition plan for every system. Windows updates can overwrite EFI boot files. The guide identifies installing the operating systems on separate drives as one way to avoid that particular problem, not as a guarantee against all dual-boot issues.

CachyOS vs Arch Linux: what you trade

Area CachyOS Manual Arch installation
Initial setup Graphical installer with selectable desktop and package choices. More system assembly is left to the user during installation.
Configuration Guided choices and project-provided defaults. More direct control over which components and configuration to put together.
Maintenance Arch-related rolling system; ongoing updates and troubleshooting remain part of use. Arch rolling-release maintenance likewise remains the user’s responsibility.
Packages and tooling CachyOS documents optimized package repositories and a pacman fork with CachyOS features; it warns of possible compatibility warnings with standard Arch workflows. Standard Arch workflows avoid those CachyOS-specific additions.
Learning path A preconfigured desktop can provide a place to explore Arch-family package management and system choices after setup. Building more of the system directly exposes those choices during installation.

CachyOS’s repository documentation describes CPU-architecture detection and optimized repository tiers. Its linux-cachyos README explains that its pacman fork adds features such as installed-from tracking and automatic architecture detection, and notes possible compatibility warnings with standard Arch workflows. It also describes an alternative using optimized package repositories without the CachyOS repository and custom pacman. The project’s design explains what it is trying to optimize; it does not establish a measured performance advantage for every user. No independent benchmark or controlled CachyOS-versus-Arch comparison is established by the cited material.

Desktop Edition

The Desktop Edition is the relevant choice for a conventional desktop or laptop installation. Its installer offers a broad selection of desktop environments, so consider whether you want the familiar workflow of KDE Plasma or GNOME, or a more customizable tiling environment such as Hyprland, Niri, Sway, or i3. Check the current download page before installing because editions and choices may change.

Handheld Edition

Check the current release before installing

Release details are time-sensitive, so use the download page to obtain the current ISO rather than relying on a mirror or image named in an older guide. CachyOS’s August 9, 2026 release notes describe installer fixes and refactoring, desktop changes including Niri and Noctalia variants, and improved handheld detection. The notes call it the project’s fifth release of 2026 and say existing users need no manual change beyond the usual update command, sudo pacman -Syu. These release notes describe that release; they do not establish that it remains the newest version. See the August 2026 release notes and check the live download page for a new installation.
