A Java cache miss means the requested key or entry was not present in that cache when the application looked for it. A miss is not, by itself, evidence that the cache is broken: it can reflect a newly started cache, expiration, eviction, invalidation, or a workload that rarely reuses the same keys. Start by identifying which cache layer reported the miss, then check its metrics, key construction, lifetime, and eviction policy before changing capacity.

This guide covers application-level caches, including in-process Java caches and Redis-backed caches. A processor’s hardware cache is a different subject and requires profiling tools suited to CPU performance.

What a cache miss means

A cache stores values so an application can retrieve them without repeating a slower operation, such as reading a database. A lookup is a hit when the requested entry is available; it is a miss when it is absent at lookup time. With cache-aside, the application typically fetches a missing value from the primary store and may then put that value in the cache for later reads.

A miss can be normal. For example, the first lookup after startup may occur before an entry has been cached. What matters is whether the miss rate fits the workload’s expected reuse and what the miss costs in the application: a miss may trigger a database or network read.

Common reasons a Java application cache misses

Cold or newly populated cache

After startup, restart, deployment, or cache clearing, entries may not yet have been loaded. The first lookup for each key can miss, followed by hits if the application caches the fetched values and requests those keys again.

Expiration

An entry with a time-to-live or other expiration rule stops being available after its configured lifetime. Check the actual expiration settings and whether the application’s access pattern is compatible with that lifetime.

Eviction under capacity or memory limits

A cache may remove entries to stay within a size or memory limit. Caffeine supports size-, time-, and reference-based eviction; Redis applies its configured eviction policy when memory exceeds maxmemory. Increasing a limit without checking the policy and workload may only defer the same behavior. See the Caffeine eviction documentation and Redis eviction documentation.

Invalidation after data changes

An entry can be deliberately removed or invalidated so that later reads do not keep using stale data. Redis client-side tracking, for example, sends invalidation messages for modified tracked keys; a client cache must discard the affected local copy. Invalidation is different from expiration: it is triggered by a change or an explicit action rather than simply by elapsed time. See Redis client-side caching.

Keys that do not get reused

A cache helps most when later requests look up the same keys. If requests use highly variable identifiers, entries may be populated but rarely requested again. Also check whether reads and writes construct keys consistently: differences in prefixes, case, serialization, or included parameters are plausible code-level causes of misses, not universal behaviors of Java caches. Inspect the exact key produced at both the cache write and lookup.

Diagnose misses in a useful order

  1. Identify the cache layer. Determine whether the lookup is against an in-process Java cache, Redis, a framework abstraction, or another cache. In a multi-layer setup, one layer can miss while another hits; identify which metric or log message is reporting the miss.
  2. Measure over a representative interval. Avoid drawing conclusions from a brief startup period or a small number of requests. For Redis, run INFO stats and inspect keyspace_hits and keyspace_misses. The hit-rate calculation is hits / (hits + misses) * 100, using the counters for the same observation window. Redis notes that an EXISTS call for an absent key counts as a miss, so interpret the counters in light of how the application uses Redis. See Redis keyspace hit and miss guidance.
  3. Verify key consistency and reuse. Log or inspect representative keys at both write and lookup points, without exposing sensitive values. Check whether the same logical item maps to the same cache key and whether the workload requests it again before its entry expires or is evicted.
  4. Inspect expiration and capacity settings. Review TTLs, size or weight maximums, Redis maxmemory, and the configured eviction policy. For Caffeine, reference-based eviction is also available; its documentation cautions that soft references can have performance implications and recommends a predictable maximum size instead. Caffeine expiration maintenance may be periodic or activity-driven; a scheduler can be configured when prompt expiration is required. Tests can use a ticker rather than waiting for real time. See Caffeine eviction and expiration details.
  5. Trace invalidation and writes. Follow the code paths that update the primary data and cache. Confirm that invalidations target the expected key, that tracked client-side entries are discarded when notified, and that a later read can repopulate the cache where intended.
  6. Compare misses with their cost. Check fallback latency, database load, and network activity alongside the miss count. A high miss rate may be less urgent if misses are inexpensive; a lower rate may still matter if each miss causes a costly primary-store read. Establish the impact from your own measurements rather than assuming a universal penalty or target rate.

How cache-aside handles a miss with Redis

In the cache-aside pattern, the application checks Redis first. If the key is absent, it reads from the primary database, stores the result in Redis with a TTL, and returns the result. On writes, the application can invalidate the cached key so the next read obtains current data and repopulates the cache. Redis publishes Java examples using both Jedis and Lettuce; they illustrate this pattern, not a requirement to use Redis in every Java application.

Decision point In-process cache such as Caffeine Redis-backed cache
Shared state across application instances Each process has its own cache; entries are not automatically shared with other instances. Instances can use a shared Redis cache, subject to the deployment and client configuration.
Lookup and fallback latency Measure local lookup and fallback behavior in the application. Measure Redis network access and the fallback path in the actual deployment; no universal comparative benchmark is established here.
Capacity and eviction Caffeine provides size-, time-, and reference-based eviction controls. Redis uses its configured eviction policy when memory exceeds maxmemory.
Invalidation and staleness Define how each process’s cached entry is updated or removed. Define write invalidation and, for client-side caching, handling of tracking invalidations.
Operational complexity Consider per-process configuration and memory use. Consider operating and monitoring Redis as an additional service.

What miss rate should you aim for?

There is no universal target percentage. Redis recommends comparing the observed hit rate with what the application should see for its workload. A cache for repeatedly requested reference data has different expected reuse from one holding mostly one-off values. Treat the hit-rate formula as a measurement, not a benchmark: interpret it alongside key reuse, cache policy, fallback cost, and database load.

When to investigate a different kind of cache

If “cache miss” refers to CPU hardware-cache behavior rather than a Java application cache, the checks above do not diagnose it. Application-cache counters such as Redis keyspace hits and misses say nothing about processor cache misses. Use profiling and hardware-performance analysis appropriate to the JVM and operating system to investigate that problem.
