Coding agents can leak private information even when no single tool call looks dangerous: an agent might read a customer email in a bug report, then include it in a public GitHub issue several steps later. Bytes #525, published September 29, 2026, examines this cross-tool, cross-turn risk and the controls intended to contain it. Its central example, OpenAPPA, checks whether information may flow to a proposed destination before an agent acts.

Why coding-agent safety is an information-flow problem

A risky agent action is not always obvious from the action alone. Reading a private bug report may be legitimate; creating a public issue may also be legitimate. The danger appears when the agent carries sensitive details from the first action into the second.

That is why reviewing tool calls one at a time can miss a leak. A policy needs to account for the information an agent has encountered, how trustworthy that information is, and where the agent proposes to send it. Bytes #525 frames this problem as “childproofing” increasingly capable agents: the goal is not to assume the agent will always make the right judgment, but to give it enforceable boundaries.

How OpenAPPA is designed to control data flows

OpenAPPA, described by its developer Archestra, is a policy guardrail for agent tool calls and information flows. Its documentation describes three connected parts:

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Security labels track sensitivity and trust

The system tracks who may see data and how much it is trusted. Reading private material can restrict the audience for information; encountering untrusted web content can lower its trust level. These labels give policy checks context beyond the name of the next tool.

Tool contracts are checked around calls

Declarative contracts describe rules for tools. OpenAPPA checks them before a proposed call and updates its policy state afterward, so a later action can be assessed in light of earlier reads and writes.

Remedy plans offer a path forward

If a call is blocked, the agent can receive options rather than a bare denial. Documented remedies include cleaning sensitive fields, requesting approval for that specific action, or isolating a read in a subagent. These options can preserve useful work while preventing a prohibited flow.

OpenAPPA’s documentation presents this as a way to check information flows before actions. The practical question for an organization is whether the rules reflect its own data classifications, destinations, and approval requirements—not simply whether a policy engine exists.

How OpenAPPA and OpenAI Auto-review differ

Both approaches aim to reduce unsafe agent behavior, but they place emphasis on different control points. OpenAI describes Auto-review as a separate agent that reviews actions crossing a sandbox boundary. OpenAPPA describes a policy engine that tracks data sensitivity and trust and checks whether a proposed flow is allowed.

Question OpenAI Auto-review and deployment controls OpenAPPA
What is inspected? A proposed boundary-crossing action is reviewed by a separate agent. OpenAI also describes sandboxing, approval rules, and managed network policy as distinct controls. Data sensitivity, trust, and the proposed information flow are checked against tool policies.
Where are controls applied? At sandbox boundaries, through approval rules, and through network restrictions, as described in OpenAI’s deployment account. Before a tool call, with policy state updated afterward, according to OpenAPPA’s documentation.
What can happen when a call is blocked? The cited Auto-review description concerns approving or denying boundary-crossing actions; it does not establish the same remedy workflow described by OpenAPPA. Possible remedies include approval, cleaning sensitive fields, or isolating a read in a subagent.

These controls need not be treated as mutually exclusive. Sandboxing can constrain what code can do; network policy can limit where it can connect; approval rules can require human confirmation in defined cases; and information-flow policies can restrict what data may go to a destination. The right comparison is about the boundaries each system enforces, not just which one reports the larger benchmark figure.

What the published benchmark numbers do—and do not—show

The figures below come from evaluations described by OpenAI and OpenAPPA in 2026. They use different scopes and should not be read as a head-to-head test.

Reported result Source and evaluation scope How to interpret it
99.3% prompt-injection recall OpenAI, 2026. Share of synthetic prompt-injection cases correctly denied in its evaluation, across selected categories including remote code execution, secret exfiltration, and external upload. A result on the specified evaluation, not a guarantee against every real-world attack or unsafe call.
0 successful scored attacks in 1,320 evaluations OpenAPPA, 2026. Reported across its stated Bench-Corp and AgentThreatBench evaluations. A vendor-reported result within those benchmark evaluations; it does not prove universal protection.
88–90% task completion OpenAPPA, 2026. Vendor-reported completion rates for guarded OpenAPPA across three models in its stated Bench-Corp enterprise workflow evaluation. Evidence about utility in that evaluation, not a general completion rate for all deployments.
37–45% task completion OpenAPPA, 2026. Vendor-reported rates for the FIDES configurations it evaluated in the same published comparison. Applies to those tested configurations; it should not be generalized to all FIDES deployments.

OpenAI says its evaluation combines synthetic and existing datasets, covers several threat categories, and may evolve over time. OpenAPPA presents its own evaluation and comparison results. The available descriptions do not establish independent replication of OpenAPPA’s reported results, and the benchmark sets are not shown to be methodologically aligned. Read the numbers as bounded evidence from their respective publishers, not as a direct ranking of products.

How to assess agent guardrails in practice

When evaluating controls for a coding agent, ask how they handle both security and useful work:

  • What context does the control inspect? Does it review only the proposed action and recent context, or also track data origin, sensitivity, trust, and destination?
  • Where is enforcement applied? Look for technical limits at the sandbox or network boundary, checks before tool calls, or multiple layers. A policy that exists only as advice to the model is different from an enforceable boundary.
  • What does the evaluation actually measure? Identify the threats, tasks, models, configurations, trial count, and definition of success. Keep results separate when those conditions differ.
  • What happens after a block? Consider whether the agent can redact data, isolate untrusted input, or seek narrowly scoped approval without bypassing the policy.
  • Is legitimate task completion measured too? Attack resistance matters, but so does whether the agent can complete authorized work under the same guarded setup.

A useful deployment combines controls whose boundaries are explicit and whose policies match the organization’s data rules. Benchmark results can inform that decision, but they cannot substitute for checking the actual enforcement points and testing workflows that matter to the organization.
