“Using the web to build the web” means running a web development environment inside the browser—not merely using a browser to view finished sites. In Bytes #263, published February 15, 2024, the feature focused on StackBlitz WebContainers, which bring Node.js and familiar development commands into a browser tab so a project can be run and shared there. That approach can make some workflows easier to reproduce, but it does not remove browser compatibility limits or make every Node.js dependency work.

What Bytes #263 means by building the web in a browser

In a conventional setup, a developer uses a local computer or a remote development server to run project tools, then views the result in a browser. WebContainers shift part of that setup into the browser itself. StackBlitz describes WebContainers as a browser-based runtime for executing Node.js applications and operating system commands inside a browser tab. The Bytes feature presents the technology as a WebAssembly-based environment that can run Node.js and package managers such as npm, pnpm, and yarn. Bytes #263 · WebContainer API documentation

The point is not that websites replace computers or that all development happens without a backend. It is that a browser can host a development environment: project files and tools can be opened, run, and previewed without asking each person to recreate the same setup locally.

Share a bug reproduction as a URL

A developer can prepare a small project that reproduces a bug and share its browser-based environment. A recipient can open it and inspect or run the example, rather than first installing a toolchain and assembling a matching project. The issue describes this as a one-click reproduction workflow; that is an example of the product’s intended use, not evidence that every bug can be reduced to a shareable project.

Make design-system documentation interactive

Documentation for an internal design system can include a ready-to-use coding environment. Instead of only reading component examples, a teammate can work with a live project and see how the pieces behave. Bytes presents this as a way to make internal documentation more immediately useful; organizations would still need to decide how the environment is hosted and what code or assets it can access.

Review pull requests across branches

The issue also points to browser-based environments as a way to make pull-request review easier across branches and repositories. A reviewer can inspect a project in an environment that is closer to the change being reviewed, rather than relying only on screenshots or reproducing the setup by hand. This is a potential workflow benefit, not a controlled finding that browser review is faster or better in every team.

Deploy within company infrastructure

When Bytes #263 was published, it said StackBlitz had introduced a self-hostable build for company infrastructure and private repositories. StackBlitz currently describes its Enterprise offering as deployable as a self-hosted Kubernetes instance and says it uses WebContainers for a Node.js development environment in the browser sandbox. See the StackBlitz Enterprise page for the vendor’s current product description.

How browser development compares with local and remote environments

There is no single performance or security winner established by the issue or the cited product documentation. Bytes characterizes conventional remote server IDEs as slower and less secure than local environments, but that is the newsletter’s framing—not a benchmark or security audit. A practical comparison is about where code runs, how environments are shared, and which dependencies and organizational requirements the setup supports.

Consideration Browser-based environment Local development Remote server IDE
Where compute runs In the browser tab through WebContainers, for supported workloads. On the developer’s computer. On a remote server; exact architecture depends on the service.
Sharing a reproducible setup Can package a ready-to-run project environment that is opened in a browser. Usually requires sharing files and setup instructions or another environment mechanism. May provide a shared remote workspace; implementation varies.
Network dependence Browser features, access to project resources, and preview behavior can affect operation. Local tools can run without a remote development server, though projects may still depend on network resources. Depends on connectivity to the service and its remote resources.
Compatibility boundary Limited by browser support and dependencies that can run in the browser environment. Depends on the local operating system, installed tools, and dependencies. Depends on the server environment and the service’s supported tools.
Deployment and privacy needs Enterprise describes a self-hosted Kubernetes option; organizations must assess their own requirements. Code and tools run locally, subject to the developer’s device and organizational controls. Data handling and deployment depend on the service or self-hosted configuration.

The table describes general trade-offs, not measured rankings: the Bytes issue supplies no controlled comparison, and the cited sources do not establish uniform startup times, latency, or security outcomes.

Compatibility and dependency limits to check

Browser features and isolation

StackBlitz’s browser-support documentation says WebContainers require modern browser capabilities, including SharedArrayBuffer and cross-origin isolation. The vendor page, marked last updated February 2023, describes full support for Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers, beta support for Firefox and Safari, and partial or beta support on mobile. Those are dated vendor statements, not freshly verified compatibility guidance; check current requirements for the browser and project you plan to use. StackBlitz browser support

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Mobile devices may have tighter memory limits. Browser privacy settings and cross-origin behavior can also affect whether a project starts or a preview works. If an environment fails to launch, confirm the browser’s current support and required isolation behavior before assuming the project itself is broken.

Native Node.js addons

WebContainers can run languages supported natively on the web, including JavaScript and WebAssembly. A Node.js package that depends on a native addon written in a language such as C++ will not necessarily work: the addon needs to be compiled to WebAssembly to run in this environment. StackBlitz’s WebContainers troubleshooting documentation describes this boundary.

Who benefits most from this approach?

Browser-based development is especially relevant when the goal is to give another person a project they can run with little setup: a bug reproduction, an interactive example, or a review environment. It is less straightforward when a project relies on native components that cannot be compiled to WebAssembly, or when a target browser lacks the required capabilities. For teams handling private repositories or infrastructure constraints, StackBlitz’s Enterprise product is a category to evaluate; the fit depends on the organization’s deployment and privacy requirements.

The title’s promise is best understood as a shift in where a development environment can live, not a claim that local machines, remote servers, or compatibility checks have become unnecessary.
