Bytes #258, published January 29, 2024, made the case that Zed could pair the capabilities of a full IDE with the responsiveness of a lightweight editor. It pointed to Zed’s open-source release, its Rust-based UI framework, and collaborative coding features as reasons for the excitement. That speed comparison was the newsletter’s characterization—not the result of a controlled benchmark.

What was Bytes #258 about?

“Better off Zed” was the main feature in Bytes issue 258, published January 29, 2024. It discussed Zed’s recent decision to open source its editor and the UI framework behind it, and asked why developers were paying attention. The Bytes archive corroborates the issue’s date and place in the newsletter series.

The issue reported that Zed’s repository gained “13,000+ GitHub stars” after the open-source announcement. That is a figure Bytes reported in 2024, not a current star count or an independently verified measurement.

Why did the newsletter say Zed might feel fast?

Bytes framed Zed’s appeal as a mix of two qualities developers often want together: the feature set of a full IDE and the responsiveness associated with a lightweight editor. It also raised the question of whether Electron is the main reason VS Code can feel slow. That was a rhetorical prompt, not evidence that Electron alone determines VS Code’s performance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Zed’s technical foundation was part of the pitch. In its January 24, 2024 open-source announcement, Zed said its editor is powered by GPUI, a GPU-accelerated UI framework written in Rust that the team built. The sources establish how Zed described its architecture and positioning; they do not provide a controlled Zed-versus-VS-Code speed test. Performance depends on the work being done and the user’s setup, so the newsletter’s comparison should be read as editorial framing rather than a benchmark verdict.

What did open source mean in Zed’s announcement?

Zed’s January 24, 2024 announcement described different licenses for different parts of the project: the editor code under GPL, server-side components under AGPL, and GPUI under Apache 2. These are the terms stated in that historical announcement. The distinction matters: open-sourcing the editor did not mean that every related service or component had the same license.

The announcement also described the team’s commercial direction at the time: it preferred selling services integrated with the editor, including Channels and server-side AI compute, rather than charging for the editor itself. Nathan Sobo wrote, “We’re never going to show you a banner ad in your code editor, and if we do, you can always build Zed from source.” The statement appeared in the January 24, 2024 announcement and reflects that announcement’s position.

How did Zed’s collaboration features fit the pitch?

Bytes highlighted a shared workspace where developers could navigate and edit code together, with a chat panel for discussing changes. Zed’s January 17, 2024 post, “Introducing Channels for Collaboration”, described the contemporaneous concept in more detail, including shared projects, persistent channels, and notes.

Together, those announcements explain why collaboration was part of the 2024 argument for Zed: the editor was presented not only as a place to write code, but also as a shared space for working through it with others. These historical descriptions do not establish current availability or the exact behavior of collaboration features today.

How does the 2024 business-model discussion compare with current pricing?

The newsletter described the editor as free and open source and speculated that collaboration could become a way for Zed to make money. Zed’s announcement likewise discussed services as a possible business model. Those were statements about the company’s direction in January 2024, not a promise that every feature or service would remain free.

As listed on Zed’s pricing page, checked October 7, 2026, the plans are:

What should readers take away from “Better off Zed”?

Bytes #258 captured an early-2024 moment: Zed had just announced that its editor and GPUI were open source, and its team was presenting responsiveness and real-time collaboration as part of the product’s appeal. The issue’s claims are useful context for why Zed drew attention, but they are not a current product review or a measured comparison with VS Code. The newsletter’s reported star count and Zed’s licensing and business-model statements also belong to their 2024 context; current plan details are a separate matter.
