Bytes Issue 177, published April 10, 2023, uses Uno as a metaphor for the unpredictability of CSS—but its main feature is about UnoCSS, the atomic CSS engine created by Anthony Fu. The issue traces the idea to Fu’s work on Vitesse, explains how it framed UnoCSS against Tailwind’s utility-generation model at the time, and makes a speed claim that should be read as a dated newsletter statement, not a current benchmark.
What Bytes Issue 177 is about
The title’s “Uno” is wordplay: the newsletter opens by comparing the card game with the surprises developers encounter when writing CSS. The technical feature is about UnoCSS, which Bytes describes as a fast-growing atomic CSS engine created by Anthony Fu. The Bytes archive lists Issue 177 with the same title and April 10, 2023 publication date.
Bytes connects UnoCSS’s beginnings to Fu’s work on Vitesse, a Vite starter template that had used Tailwind. The issue presents UnoCSS as an effort to rethink how atomic CSS utilities are generated, rather than simply as another preconfigured CSS framework.
How the issue distinguishes UnoCSS from Tailwind
Bytes describes the approaches as they appeared in its 2023 feature. Its account is useful for understanding the article’s argument, but it is not a current feature-by-feature comparison of either project.

The utility-generation model
In the issue’s description, a traditional Atomic CSS workflow supplied a broad set of utilities, then used PurgeCSS to scan the project and remove utilities that were not used. Bytes says Tailwind responded to performance concerns with an on-demand JIT engine in 2021: it scanned source code and generated only the utilities it found there.
The newsletter then argues that Tailwind’s API and plugin system remained rooted in the traditional model, while UnoCSS offered a chance to reconsider the approach. These are Bytes’s historical characterizations, not independently verified descriptions of current releases.

Engine rather than framework
Bytes’s central distinction is that UnoCSS is a lower-level engine, not a framework with a fixed set of core utilities. In the issue’s framing, functionality comes through presets, which lets users shape the utilities and behavior they want. It also points to flexibility and build-tool integrations as reasons the engine’s lower-level design matters.
That distinction is more informative than treating UnoCSS as simply “Tailwind but faster”: the issue’s focus is on the level of abstraction and how utilities are supplied, as well as on performance.

Is UnoCSS faster than Tailwind?
Bytes stated in April 2023 that UnoCSS was “5x faster than Tailwind JIT.” That number is the newsletter’s claim, not a result independently substantiated by the issue page. The page does not provide benchmark methodology, versions, or test conditions, so the figure cannot establish which tool is faster today or predict performance in a particular project.
A meaningful current comparison would need to identify the versions tested, build setup, workload, and measurement method. Issue 177 does not provide those details; its speed figure should be understood as part of the newsletter’s 2023 presentation.

What the title does—and does not—recommend
Despite the card-game pun, this is not a recommendation to buy a deck of Uno cards. UnoCSS is software, and Bytes Issue 177’s substantive topic is its design and relationship to atomic CSS. Other material in the newsletter, including a giveaway and sponsor mentions, belongs to its historical 2023 contents and does not establish that an offer or program is active now.
