The Proteus Controller is a modular gaming controller made by ByoWave and developed with Xbox as a Designed for Xbox product. Its snap-together parts can be rearranged into different control layouts, giving players a way to explore whether a setup better matches their preferred play style or physical needs. It is not a Microsoft-manufactured first-party controller, and modularity alone does not guarantee a fit for every player.
What the Proteus Controller is
Xbox announced the ByoWave Proteus Controller for preorder on May 15, 2024, then said it was officially available for purchase on August 21, 2024. Xbox described the product as a modular kit for Xbox and PC games, developed with ByoWave under the Designed for Xbox program. Xbox’s May 2024 announcement introduced the preorder; its August 2024 update announced purchase availability.
The key idea is physical reconfiguration: rather than using one fixed controller shape, a player can snap components together in different positions. Xbox said the design allows “over 100 million different combinations.” That is Xbox’s claim about possible configurations, not an independent measurement of how many are practical or how well they work for a particular player.

Layouts and components
ByoWave’s current Proteus Controller Kit page describes hardware version 2.0 with 15+ snap-together components. It shows options for one-handed, two-handed, and tabletop use. These are starting points for exploring an input arrangement, not a guarantee that the kit will suit a specific disability, reach, grip, range of motion, or play preference. Changing button behavior
ByoWave says its browser-based software can remap buttons and change stick directions, with configurations that can be saved and shared. The product page says the software runs in Chrome and Edge on Windows 10 and 11 and macOS; it describes the app as optional but recommended. Check the current instructions for the exact configuration and platform you plan to use, since a feature described for the kit should not be assumed to work identically in every mode.
Wired, wireless, and HID use
The manufacturer describes wired and wireless play, Hall Effect sticks and triggers, and macros in HID mode. HID mode maps controller inputs to keyboard or mouse functions and is PC-only. The FAQ also says first-generation hardware does not support HID mode or macros added after a later system and connectivity update, so those features require checking the hardware generation rather than relying on the Proteus name alone. Compatibility depends on the kit and feature
ByoWave’s FAQ lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10|11, and Steam Deck for its Builder Kit and upgraded Proteus Controller Kit. That list is not a blanket assurance that every feature works on every platform: HID mode is PC-only, and first-generation hardware lacks later HID and macro features. Before buying, confirm the exact kit version and the support for the feature you intend to use in the current product information and setup guidance.
Price, availability, and launch history
At launch in August 2024, Xbox reported an estimated retail price of $299 USD and named the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, and Canada as launch regions. Those figures describe launch-era pricing and territories; they are not a current quote or a guarantee of shipping availability. ByoWave’s product page, accessed September 27, 2026, listed its Proteus Controller Kit Lithos Collection at €299, identified it as version 2.0, and said batch one had sold out while batch two was shipping soon. Price, stock, and delivery options can change, so check the current regional listing and checkout before making a purchase.

How to decide whether it is worth investigating
The useful question is not how many theoretical combinations the controller allows, but whether a particular arrangement makes the games and inputs a player wants to use more workable. There is no independent comparative usability test or outcome statistic in the cited official product material; the combination count and feature descriptions are corporate statements, not evidence of universal accessibility or effectiveness.

- Try to define the needed arrangement. Consider which inputs need to be reachable, whether one-handed or tabletop positioning is relevant, and whether the available modules appear capable of that layout.
- Match platform to feature. Confirm the console or PC operating system, the exact kit generation, and whether a desired remapping or HID function is supported there.
