A used or refurbished phone can cost less upfront, but the asking price alone does not tell you whether it is a safe or worthwhile purchase. Before paying, check the phone’s IMEI, inspect its condition, verify who is actually selling it, and read the return and warranty terms. The right place to buy depends on how much seller accountability, hands-on inspection, and recourse you need.
Where to buy a used phone in Canada
Compare sellers on accountability, your ability to inspect the phone, return and warranty coverage, total delivered cost, and whether the purchase requires a wireless plan. The Canadian Telecommunications Association recommends buying from a person or retailer you know and trust. Many wireless providers sell refurbished devices with return policies and warranties, but terms differ by seller, so read the current offer rather than assuming every device has the same protection. | Buying channel | What to weigh | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier or retailer refurbished phone | May offer a more accountable seller, a return policy, and a warranty. | Current return window, warranty coverage, condition description, total price, and any plan requirement. |
| Marketplace listing | May be sold by the retailer or by an independent third party; the third party may manage fulfillment, service, and returns. | Who the seller is, who handles returns and complaints, and what the condition grade means for that seller. |
| Private sale | Lets you deal directly with the owner and inspect the phone, and may have a lower asking price. Most consumer legislation does not cover private sales. | Seller identity, device history, IMEI, condition, and written records of the seller’s claims. Meet safely and inspect before paying. |
| International seller | Can make resolving a problem harder, and a foreign warranty may not protect a purchase in Canada. | Shipping, currency conversion, duties, taxes, private courier fees, returns, and whether warranty service is available in Canada. |
For example, eBay Canada describes its official Refurbished program as using condition grades, offering one- or two-year Allstate-serviced warranties, and providing 30-day free returns subject to exceptions. The program is distinct from individual listings marked “Seller Refurbished.” These are eBay’s stated program terms; check the specific listing and current terms before buying. eBay Canada Refurbished program

How to check whether a used phone is blacklisted
Ask the seller for the phone’s IMEI and check it with Canada’s DeviceCheck service before you pay. A phone reported lost or stolen and added to the Canadian device blacklist will not work on participating Canadian networks. A clear check is a useful screening step, not a guarantee against every kind of fraud or a future blacklist report. DeviceCheck Canada

What to inspect and ask before buying
Ask how old the phone is, how heavily it was used, whether it has been repaired, and whether it has been dropped or damaged. Confirm which accessories are included. Health Canada advises consumers to inspect second-hand handheld electrical products, including cell phones, for damage. For an online listing, request clear, detailed photos rather than relying on a broad condition label. Health Canada guidance on second-hand products

- Check the exact model’s suitability for your needs and compatibility with your wireless provider. Compatibility was not established for every model or Canadian network, so verify with the provider before purchase.
- Check the model’s software-support status and battery condition for that exact device. No universal battery-health threshold or model-by-model support date applies to every used phone.
How to evaluate the listing, returns, and warranty
Read the full listing and save a copy, including its condition description, seller name, shipping terms, return policy, and complaint process. On a marketplace, identify whether the retailer or an independent third party is responsible for the sale and returns. The Office of Consumer Affairs notes that most consumer legislation does not cover private sales; provincial and territorial rules can differ, so consult your local consumer affairs office if you need an answer about a specific dispute. Calculate the total cost before paying
Compare the full delivered cost, not just the listed price. Include shipping, taxes, import duties and fees where relevant, currency conversion, required accessories, and any required wireless plan. For international orders, the Office of Consumer Affairs specifically advises accounting for shipping, exchange rates, duties, taxes, and private service fees. Keep the phone purchase separate from the wireless plan
A handset purchase and a mobile service plan involve different protections. The CRTC says customers with a mobile plan are protected by the Wireless Code; consult its current guidance for service-provider rights and plan questions.
