Buy a new game at launch if playing now—with friends, during an active community moment, or before spoilers reach you—is worth more than a possible future discount. Wait if saving money matters more than the timing and you can live with uncertainty: sales recur, but no calendar guarantees when a particular game will be discounted or by how much.
What are you paying for when you buy at launch?
A launch purchase buys the game and earlier access to it. That extra time may matter if your friends plan to play together, you want to join a live multiplayer community, or you care about avoiding story spoilers. Those are personal benefits, not a guaranteed feature or measurable value for every game.

If none of those apply, waiting can be the more comfortable choice—especially when the launch price would strain your budget. There is no universal discount threshold that makes waiting worthwhile. Set a price that fits your budget and decide how much you value playing sooner.

What can you count on if you wait?
You can count on major storefronts running promotions; you cannot count on a particular game appearing in the next one. Steam documents four seasonal sales each year, and PlayStation and Nintendo publish sales and promotional offers. These calendars show that opportunities recur, not that a specific title will be included on a predictable schedule.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Steam seasonal sale dates listed when checked in 2026 include the Autumn Sale, October 1–8, and the Winter Sale, December 17, 2026–January 4, 2027. The page also lists Spring and Summer 2027 dates. Sale dates can change, and eligibility rules apply.
- PlayStation Store’s US deals page records 2026 promotions including the Spring Sale, Days of Play, and Summer Sale. It establishes that promotions occur, not a reliable interval or a prediction for an individual game.
- Nintendo’s US sales page lists offers on digital games and downloadable content and invites shoppers to check back.
Because sale pages are regional and change over time, check the store for your country and platform when you are ready to buy. The available official calendars do not establish an average wait time or typical discount for a new game.
How Steam’s discount rules affect launch timing
Steam has platform-specific discount rules; they are not industry-wide rules. Valve says a product generally cannot be discounted within 30 days of release or a price increase. An optional launch discount can be configured before release: Valve documents a discount of 10–40% lasting 7–14 days.
Rank #2
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
Steam’s documentation also says discounts should generally refer to a base price that has been in place for at least 30 days, or to a bona fide launch price that remains after an introductory offer. Seasonal sales can be an exception to ordinary discount cooldowns, but they do not override the release and price-increase cooldowns. These rules limit what a publisher can do on Steam; they do not predict when any particular game will go on sale.

Compare the actual offers, not just launch versus waiting
Before deciding, compare the price available now with the price you would be willing to pay later. Check the game’s store page and, where relevant, packaged copies from retailers. Compare the same edition and account for regional pricing, delivery or other retailer costs, stock, and whether the offer is current or merely hoped for.
Packaged and digital versions may provide the same game experience, but prices can differ. Nintendo Support’s guidance for Australia and New Zealand says that, starting in May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2 have a recommended retail price (SRP) different from physical versions; retail partners set their own prices. This is a regional, product-specific policy—not evidence that packaged games are always cheaper worldwide. See Nintendo’s Australia and New Zealand support article for its scope.

Choose based on your timing, budget, and flexibility
| Choose | When it fits | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Buy at launch | Playing immediately has real value to you, or the current price fits your budget. | A future sale may offer a lower price, but its timing and discount are not established by the available store calendars. |
| Wait for a sale | You prefer to save and are comfortable playing later—or not buying unless the price reaches your target. | Whether and when that specific title will be discounted, and by how much. |
| Buy the best current offer | A retailer’s packaged offer or a store promotion beats the option you were considering, for the same edition and platform. | Prices, availability, and regional offers vary; a lower packaged price is not guaranteed. |
One practical rule is to buy now only when the current price is acceptable even if the game later costs less. Otherwise, set a target price and wait without treating an upcoming seasonal sale as a promise.

Can you get money back if the price drops?
Do not assume a price drop triggers a refund or price adjustment. Steam Support says it cannot refund the difference after a price reduction and suggests requesting a refund of the original purchase and buying again at the sale price. That option depends on the purchase meeting Steam’s refund eligibility requirements; it is not a guaranteed way to recover the difference. Check the relevant store’s current refund policy before relying on one.
