There is no single carry-on size that works on every airline. Before a business trip, check the operating carrier and fare for every flight, then measure your packed bags—including wheels, handles and other protruding parts—and verify that your personal item fits beneath the seat. Published dimensions help you check compliance, but they do not guarantee overhead-bin space.
How to check whether your business travel bag will fit
- Identify the operating airline for each flight. A flight sold under one airline’s code may be operated by a partner with different baggage rules. Check the airline actually operating each segment, including connections, and consult its current baggage policy. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) says allowances can vary by airline, cabin class and aircraft type. IATA’s passenger baggage rules are a useful reference, not a universal allowance.
- Confirm what your fare includes. Check your booking and the operating carrier’s rules to see whether your fare includes a cabin suitcase, a personal item, or both. The policies cited below give airline examples, not a complete account of fare exceptions across carriers.
- Measure each bag when packed. Measure height, width and depth at the bag’s largest points. Include wheels, handles, pockets and attachments when the airline says they count. If the airline publishes a linear-dimension limit, add the three outside measurements and compare that total too.
- Check the personal item separately. A laptop bag or briefcase may qualify, but its allowance and size limit depend on the airline. Confirm that it fits beneath the seat in front of you, rather than assuming that a bag accepted as a personal item will fit every aircraft’s seat space.
- Check the aircraft and each connection. Regional aircraft may have less cabin storage, and a connection can have different operating-carrier rules from the first flight. Leave time for the possibility that staff will require a gate check if cabin storage is limited.
Why no single carry-on measurement is universal
IATA gives 56 × 45 × 25 cm (22 × 18 × 10 in) as a general reference used by many airlines, including wheels and handles. IATA also notes that allowances vary by airline, cabin class and aircraft type; the reference is not a promise that every carrier will accept a bag of that size. For an international trip, check the rules of the operating carrier on every segment rather than treating the IATA figure as an enforceable global standard.
Airlines can set different limits. For example, Delta’s published carry-on policy specifies 22 × 14 × 9 in (56 × 35 × 23 cm) and a maximum of 45 linear inches, counting external wheels and handles. Southwest’s policy specifies 24 × 16 × 10 in, counting wheels, handles and attachments. These are examples of two carriers’ stated policies, not a complete comparison of airline rules.

For a linear-inch limit, add the bag’s outside length, width and depth. Do not use the sum in place of checking each individual dimension: a bag can meet a total limit and still exceed one side’s maximum.

Carry-on suitcase versus personal item
A carry-on suitcase and a personal item are separate categories where the airline allows both. Delta’s policy allows one of each and names a laptop bag as a personal-item example. Southwest lists briefcases, laptop cases and backpacks as personal-item examples. Both policies expect the personal item to fit beneath the seat; the cited policy information does not establish one universal personal-item size.
For a work trip, plan the personal item around essentials you may need during the flight or if the suitcase is gate-checked: for example, a laptop, charger, travel documents and items needed before you reach your checked or cabin baggage. Follow security restrictions and airline rules when packing electronics, batteries, liquids and other restricted items.

Measure a packed bag, not just its product listing
Manufacturers may quote dimensions differently, and an empty bag can change shape once packed. Use the airline’s measurement method and check the exterior at its widest or deepest points. Expandable sections, stuffed front pockets and clipped-on accessories can push a bag beyond its listed or intended size.

- Measure height from the floor-facing base to the highest point, including wheels and a fixed or extended handle if the airline counts them.
- Measure width and depth at the bag’s fullest points, including bulging pockets and attachments where applicable.
- Compare all three measurements with the carrier’s individual limits, then check any stated total linear-dimension limit.
- Measure the personal item separately and check that it can go beneath the seat on your itinerary’s aircraft.
Overhead-bin space is not guaranteed
Meeting an airline’s published size limit does not guarantee that your suitcase can stay in the cabin. The Federal Aviation Administration says some aircraft have limited overhead-bin space and notes that airline rules can be stricter than posted regulations. Its carry-on guidance describes 45 linear inches as a maximum size for most airlines, not a universal entitlement to bring a bag of that size. Aircraft storage and passenger load can affect what fits. Delta says staff may further limit baggage based on aircraft storage and passenger load and may gate-check bags; it also notes limited cabin space on Delta Connection aircraft with 50 seats or fewer. Keep work-critical items and valuables accessible in your personal item when appropriate, while observing security and airline restrictions.

Preflight checklist for a work trip
- Match every flight to its operating carrier, including codeshares and connections.
- Check the current baggage rules and confirm what your purchased fare includes.
- Measure both bags packed, at their largest outside dimensions, and apply the carrier’s rules for wheels, handles and attachments.
- Check the personal-item allowance separately and make sure the bag can fit beneath the seat.
- Look for aircraft-specific or regional-aircraft restrictions, especially on short connections.
- Plan for a possible gate check; keep essential work items and valuables accessible subject to applicable rules.
