Yes—cybersecurity burnout risk can often be reduced, but no employer can guarantee that it will always be prevented. The most credible approach is to change the work conditions that repeatedly create strain—such as excessive workload, long hours, and inadequate support—while also making help and coping resources available. Individual techniques can help, but they are not a substitute for fixing unsustainable demands.
What cybersecurity burnout looks like—and what the surveys show
Cybersecurity work can involve sustained attention, time pressure, frequent task-switching, and uncertainty about the information available. Those demands do not affect everyone in the same way, and survey responses about stress are not clinical diagnoses of burnout.
In ISC2’s 2025 Cybersecurity Workforce Study, 48% of respondents said they felt exhausted from trying to stay current on threats and emerging technologies, and 47% often felt overwhelmed by their expected workload. Meanwhile, 68% reported satisfaction with their current job. Together, these results describe significant strain among respondents without implying that all cybersecurity professionals are burned out or unhappy.
The same ISC2 study found that 32% felt overworked because of staffing or skills shortages, 20% said they were expected to work long hours, and 28% said they did not have enough time to stay current on security issues. Separately, 23% reported inadequate training opportunities, and 22% said they were expected to cover security responsibilities outside their expertise.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ISACA’s October 2024 summary of its State of Cybersecurity survey reported that 66% of surveyed professionals considered their role more stressful than five years earlier. Among those respondents, reported contributing pressures included an increasingly complex threat landscape (81%), low budgets (45%), worsening hiring or retention challenges (45%), and insufficiently trained staff (45%). These are results from a separate survey, not figures to combine into a single estimate of burnout prevalence.
Why work conditions matter
NIST’s April 2025 publication, SP 1332, Minding the Gaps in Human-Centered Cybersecurity, describes cognitive overload from high-memory demands, divided attention, and multitasking. It notes that cybersecurity work can involve attention-demanding tasks, time pressure, and uncertainty about information quality and availability. The report also discusses security fatigue when overloaded employees face repeated security messages and training.

NIST’s workshop summary connects these pressures with impaired decision-making and workplace errors, including ignoring rules or standard procedures. That is a risk association described in a synthesis of research—not proof that burnout by itself caused any specific security incident.
This distinction matters for prevention: if strain comes from persistent excess work, asking employees to become more resilient does not remove the source. Managers need to identify which pressures are active on their own team before choosing a response.

How organizations can reduce burnout risk
NIST’s January 2025 white paper, Empowering Organizations to Retain Skilled Cybersecurity Talent for Long-Term Success, recommends structured wellbeing programs and regular check-ins that provide a safe place for employees to raise concerns. It also points to hours worked, overtime frequency, and leave use as indicators that can reveal excessive demands.
1. Look for patterns, not just crises
Review work hours, overtime frequency, leave use, and employee feedback over time. A single busy week may not indicate a persistent problem; a pattern of extended hours, unused leave, or repeated reports of overload warrants a closer look at workload and staffing.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
2. Change the demands when the indicators point to overwork
NIST recommends reviewing workload, adjusting schedules, or adding support when indicators suggest excessive work demands. Depending on what employees identify, that may mean changing priorities, distributing responsibilities more realistically, or making time for training and staying current. These are practical responses to reported pressures, not guaranteed cures.
3. Make support safe and accessible
Regular, constructive check-ins can give staff an opportunity to discuss concerns before they become acute. NIST also discusses employee assistance programs and access to mental health professionals. Support should be available without treating an employee’s request for help as a substitute for examining the work conditions they describe.

4. Evaluate the response and revise it
The U.S. Government Accountability Office’s January 2025 review, Cybersecurity Workforce: Departments Need to Fully Implement Key Practices, examined workforce planning at five federal departments. It describes practices such as setting direction, analyzing workforce needs, creating and monitoring action plans, and evaluating and revising them. GAO found implementation uneven across those departments and emphasized evaluating whether actions address workforce challenges. For cybersecurity employers, the practical lesson is to check whether changes are improving the conditions employees identified rather than treating a written plan or wellness message as the finish line.

NIST’s NICE program addressed burnout and balance in a webinar announced for October 1, 2025, covering early warning signs, stress management, work-life balance, supportive team environments, mindfulness practices, and healthier work habits. These topics can help employees recognize strain and find useful personal supports. They should complement—not replace—changes to excessive workload, hours, or inadequate staffing.
The available sources offer organizational guidance, survey findings, and workforce-planning evidence; they do not establish through a cybersecurity-specific controlled trial that one prevention intervention is best. Employers should therefore match their response to the team’s actual pressures and monitor whether conditions improve, rather than promising a universal fix.
A practical way to choose what to change
| Question | What to examine | What it helps distinguish |
|---|---|---|
| Is the problem a work demand or a need for personal support? | Workload, hours, overtime, staffing, schedules, and access to support | Whether the response should change job conditions, provide individual help, or do both |
| Can the team tell whether pressure is changing? | Hours, overtime frequency, leave use, workload, and employee feedback over time | Whether an action is helping or needs revision |
| Does the response fit the local cause of strain? | Ask staff whether shortages, time pressure, limited training time, or keeping up with threats are active issues | Whether the intervention addresses the pressure employees actually report |
| Is there a safe route to help? | Regular check-ins and access to employee assistance or mental health professionals | Whether staff can seek support while organizational causes are also addressed |
For leaders who want a broader treatment of workplace burnout, Harvard University Press published Christina Maslach and Michael P. Leiter’s The Burnout Challenge: Managing People’s Relationships with Their Jobs in 2022. It addresses general workplace burnout and organizational responses rather than cybersecurity specifically.
