BunsenLabs Linux is a Debian-based distribution for people who want a lightweight, preconfigured Openbox desktop rather than a full-featured desktop environment. Its current release, Carbon, is based on Debian 13 “Trixie” and includes Openbox, tint2, Conky, and jgmenu. The project’s published guidance is 1 GB of RAM minimum, 2 GB recommended, and 20 GB of hard-drive space recommended; try the live session first to check how it works with your hardware.
What is BunsenLabs Linux?
BunsenLabs is a community continuation of CrunchBang Linux. The project describes Carbon as “a distribution offering a light-weight and easily customizable Openbox desktop.” Rather than replacing Debian’s system-administration approach, BunsenLabs adds configuration and resource packages on top of Debian. Debian’s derivative census also identifies BunsenLabs as Debian-derived and lists Openbox as its interface.
The current release is Carbon, released on February 11, 2026, and based on Debian 13 “Trixie.”
What the Openbox desktop includes
Openbox is the window manager at the center of the desktop. BunsenLabs supplies a configured setup around it, with a panel, system monitor, menu, themes, wallpapers, and configuration utilities. It also includes additional desktop, multimedia, and hardware-related packages.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Openbox: manages application windows and provides the desktop’s core interaction style.
- tint2: provides the panel.
- Conky: displays system information on the desktop.
- jgmenu: provides a menu for launching applications and accessing desktop options.
This setup suits people who prefer a window-manager-centered desktop and want a ready-made collection of configuration and visual choices. If you want to build and maintain a desktop yourself, you can instead install Openbox on Debian; BunsenLabs’ distinction is that it packages a configured environment and related tools.
Published hardware guidance
The figures below are the BunsenLabs project’s published guidance, not independent performance-test results. Actual needs vary with the applications and features you use, and the project notes that fewer resources may work in some circumstances.

| Resource | Project guidance |
|---|---|
| RAM | 1 GB minimum; 2 GB recommended |
| Hard drive | 20 GB recommended |
| Installed disk space | Approximately 2.1 GB from the live ISO |
These requirements do not guarantee that a particular workload will run well. Memory use and responsiveness depend in part on what you install and run, so consider your everyday applications as well as the published minimums.
Try it before installing
The combined live/install ISO can start a live session, letting you explore the desktop and check compatibility with your computer before making installation changes. From the same ISO, you can proceed to the Debian installer. The project identifies installing from ISO on USB or optical media as its preferred, fully supported method.

- Get the Carbon ISO from the BunsenLabs website.
- Write the hybrid ISO to a USB flash drive or optical media, following the project’s installation guide. The project does not specify a required USB capacity or brand.
- Verify the download using the published SHA-256 checksum or the project’s PGP release key and signature, as described in the guide.
- Boot the computer from the installation media and choose the live session to test the desktop and hardware, or continue to the installer if you are ready to install.
The guide also describes installing BunsenLabs packages on an existing Debian system and using its netinstall script after installing a base command-line Debian system. Those are alternatives to the preferred ISO installation path.
Support and update expectations
BunsenLabs calls itself a hobby Linux distribution and states that it provides no liability, warranty, support, or guaranteed updates. The project directs users to its community forums for help and distribution discussion. If you need a commercial support commitment or guaranteed update service, that is an important limitation to weigh before choosing it.

Carbon-specific note for existing users
Carbon’s release notes document a change to the default Openbox configuration location. If you are carrying custom settings forward, compare your existing ~/.config/openbox/bl-rc.xml with the new ~/.config/bunsen/openbox/rc.xml and copy over relevant custom changes as appropriate. This migration note applies to Carbon; it should not be assumed to describe every BunsenLabs release.
Who should consider BunsenLabs?
BunsenLabs is worth considering if you want an Openbox-based desktop that arrives with a panel, menu, system monitor, themes, and configuration utilities already in place. Before committing, check the project’s memory and storage guidance against your computer, use the live session to test hardware compatibility, and decide whether community help without guaranteed updates fits your support needs. The official information describes BunsenLabs’ setup and installation options, but does not establish how it performs against other distributions in comparative benchmarks.
