Vettly is a hosted content-moderation decision API: an application sends user-generated text or media for evaluation, then uses the returned decision to allow, warn, flag, or block content under its own rules. Its documented scope covers text, images, and video—not audio. For developers, the key work is not just calling an endpoint; it is choosing a policy, mapping its decisions to a safe publishing flow, and verifying data handling, retention, and performance for the intended workload.
What Vettly’s API does
Vettly exposes REST endpoints for checking individual content and for evaluating text or media together with a policy and optional context. The API uses bearer-token authentication. Its examples describe response fields such as a decision ID, safe or flagged indicators, an action, per-item results, latency, and cost; those examples show the documented response shape, not guaranteed live values. The phrase “multi-modal” should be read according to the documented inputs: text, images, and video. The reviewed API and product documentation do not name an audio content type or audio-moderation endpoint.

How decisions fit into an application
A moderation result is an input to product behavior, not a substitute for product judgment. Vettly’s product pages describe category scores and policy-controlled actions—including allow, warn, flag, and block—with records tied to policy versions. A team still needs to decide what each action means in its interface and what happens when the service cannot return a decision.
Design the publish path
- Choose a policy. Set the categories, thresholds, and actions that match the community and the consequences of a mistaken decision. Decide which cases can proceed automatically and which require review.
- Send the content and relevant context. Use the single-item endpoint for an individual text or media item, or the multimodal endpoint when the documented combined-input workflow fits. Keep any context limited to what the moderation decision needs.
- Map the returned action to application behavior. Allow may continue publication; warn may ask a user to edit; flag may hold content for review; block may prevent publication. These are implementation choices, not universal meanings imposed by the API.
- Define the unavailable-result path. Decide explicitly whether a timeout or API error pauses publication, queues the submission, or permits it under a constrained fallback. The right choice depends on the harm risk, user experience, and operational requirements of the product.
- Provide review and appeal routes. Give moderators enough decision context to assess disputed outcomes, and give users a suitable way to appeal or correct a decision.
- Test before broad rollout. Exercise representative content, including borderline and adversarial examples, and track false positives and missed harmful content in the application’s own context.
Vettly’s product pages list reporting, blocking, appeals, webhooks, searchable decisions, and compliance exports. Treat these as vendor-described features; their presence on product pages is not an independent assessment of completeness or operational quality.
Integrating from an Express application
Vettly’s Express guide demonstrates installing @vettly/sdk, initializing a moderation client with an API key read from an environment variable, and using route middleware to check a user-submitted comment before the route’s success handler. The same guide is a practical starting point for placing moderation before content is published. The REST reference uses a bearer-key pattern. See the Express integration guide.

What to verify before production
Plan limits and pricing
Vettly’s pricing page, checked on October 7, 2026, listed the following plans and paid-plan overage rates. These are vendor-published terms that can change; confirm the live terms and how a “decision” is counted before committing.

The same pricing page listed paid-plan overages of $0.0001 per text unit, $0.001 per image unit, and $0.01 per video unit. Confirm the definitions of billable units, usage limits, history periods, and overage treatment on the Vettly pricing page for the account and plan being considered.

Retention and third-party processing
Vettly’s privacy policy says submitted content is retained for 24 hours on Free, one year on Starter, and three years on Growth. It also says third-party AI providers process data under their own privacy and security policies and contractual terms. The Vettly privacy policy should be reviewed alongside the plan terms that apply to the account.
Vettly materials are not fully consistent on storage: its how-it-works guide broadly describes in-memory processing and says content is not stored after moderation, while the privacy policy and pricing page describe tier-based retention and decision-history windows. Do not treat the broad statement as a blanket no-retention promise; verify the governing terms and configuration for the intended account.

Security and provider details
Vettly’s security page describes HTTPS transport, API keys stored as SHA-256 hashes, HMAC-SHA256 webhook signatures, and optional evidence storage in object storage with configurable retention (seven days by default). These are vendor statements, not an independent audit or a guarantee that every account has identical settings. Review the Vettly security information and applicable contract before sending sensitive content.
Vettly’s architecture guide names OpenAI Moderation API among providers it uses and describes other providers as planned or custom/enterprise options. That is a vendor-reported architecture detail; confirm the current provider configuration if it affects privacy, security, or regulatory obligations. Vettly may be worth evaluating when a team wants a hosted decision API and policy-linked moderation workflow rather than building every screening component itself. The documentation establishes endpoints and product-described workflows, but it does not establish how accurate or fast the service will be for a particular community, content mix, or traffic pattern.
No independent evidence was located for accuracy, false-positive or false-negative rates, uptime, or load-tested latency. Vettly’s speed and accuracy claims and example latency values should therefore be treated as vendor claims, not benchmarks. Before relying on the service at scale, test representative content and measure end-to-end latency and error rates under expected load.
